Hmm, i havent got a clue as to what sort of nappies i will use, am thinking i like the sound of washable because would surely be a more breathable material. i did try asking about nappies in prenancy but got told to come here!

you guys seem to know a fair bit about this and was looking for some advice please

I am only 10+1 weeks and know that really this is too early and may change my mind in 30weeks but like to be organised

Hello - i would hang out on here for a while and get an idea of all the combinations - check out a few sellers websites as well and have a good shop about as sometimes we have odd deals on. You can google me at nappyzone and i would happy to give you some free advice. Washables is defo the way to go over disposables though but you need to research it throughly so your happy with the choices you make - then you will become an addict like the rest of the cloth fraternity! Very well established, a lot of people go there for first port of call advice-wise (I know I did), but where she has selected only a couple of each style of nappy the advise can be limited. It is very reliable advice, but very little variation.

I tried the motherease ones with my first ds but didnt get on with them, this time around im using the diddy diaper by nature babies with the tots wrap. The nappies are fantastic, the wraps keep it all in. I am dry pailing as it is much easier to handle and less smelly-I would deffo reccommend a net in your bucket tho-makes things so much more simple.

Dry pailing is when you don't soak the dirty nappies, just keep them in an empty bucket until washing.

are they shaped or do you just wrap them around in some artistic fashion?
do they come with intructions?
do they pin up or have velcro or those things they stick on bandages at the hospital?
do you need different sizes?
do they stain?
if so can you get them in different colours?(to hide away any unsightly stains)
what do you wash them with?
do they leak often?
do they smell more than disposable nappies
are they expensive?

when you're out and you have to change baby how do you make sure that everybody you walk past doesnt smell the putrid smell coming from out your bag?

I started with diddy diaper smallest size-lasted upto 5 months. then went onto the next size.
I had 12 and 3 wraps
No instructions needed as are shaped nappies that fastend with a nappy nippa (all on the ecobean website)
They may stain from time to time but time on the line will bleach them out.
I wash them in ecover on a 60 wash.
no softener, hampers absorbtion.
Tumble drier is needed unless you get more nappies, one diddy diaper takes about 30 hours to air dry. I get through 7 in a day.

Each nappy is about a fiver but can go up or down depending which one you get.
I carry a large food freezer bag in my change bag and sprinkle some teatree oil in it, I just pop the dirty nappies in there and no nasty whiffs.
Im not sure about the smell issue but no one has ever mentioned anything! I really dont think they smell any more than a dispossable.
I am SOOO glad i use washables, ds has hardly had any nappy rash and they look so much more comfy for him.
I also use washable wipes (in for a penny) and just bung them in the bucket with the nappies, I use the northan essence wipe solution as a cleanser for his bottom which is on the ecobean site too.

And another thing!

Barley any leaks at all, but I'd recommend that whatever wrap you get make sure it has leg gussets as these are the leak proof part, and in my exp no leg gussetts mean more leaks-this is what im talking about

It depends on what kind you have and how often you plan to wash - to wash every 3rd day (which I prefer) you need 16-20, you can drop the number by 4 or so if you want to do every other day.

Again - depends on the type - most are shaped like a cloth disposable, and you put a waterproof wrap on the outside.

do they come with intructions?
It depends where you buy from, most don't have instructions as such but a sort of quick how to guide if you mention that you are just starting out. They are normally easy enough to work out.

do they pin up or have velcro or those things they stick on bandages at the hospital?
Poppers, velcro or nappy nippas which work by grips and tension.

do you need different sizes?
Again - depends on the nappy. You get birth to potty ones (nippa fastening or popper - I find nippa ones get a more adjustable fit for newborns), or you get sized ones that you buy the next size up as baby grows - normally 2-3 sizes of sized ones needed.

do they stain?
Sunlight bleaches out most stains

if so can you get them in different colours?(to hide away any unsightly stains)
Yes - some nappies come coloured, or I sell them with an option to have them dyed for you.

what do you wash them with?
Non-bio - I use liquid fairy.

do they leak often?
No - much less than disposables.

do they smell more than disposable nappies?
To a non-cloth user, yes, to a cloth user disposables smell hideous. I guess its what you are used to.

are they expensive?
Anywhere from a couple of pound for flat terry squares to £15 for all in ones or fancy shaped nappies. The average nappy though costs slightly more than one pack of disposables... you will be buying more than 16-20 packs of disposables in baby's life, so you're laughin

There are various waterproof sealable bags to put them in, or if you aren't anti-using them, you can wrap them up in a nappy bag/carrier bag. I don't have smells around me when I am out
