Baby Screams when I put bottle in her mouth!! Help needed!!

Hi

I just wondered if anyone else has experienced this and figured out the cause and a solution as its starting to get me worried!

My DD is five months old and has always bottle fed with no problem. But recently the second I put the bottle to her mouth she screams, kicks, punches and just goes bat shit crazy. She doesn't even try and suck, it's literally the second the teat goes in her mouth. I then spend the next half hour swapping between dummy and bottle, and eventually she will take the bottle and finish it, so she is obviously hungry.

I’ve tried winding, and I’ve tried the next teat up in case she is getting frustrated but this only seems to escalate the problem.

She is on number two teats and when she does feed she doesn't seem to struggle with it so I'm guessing she probably isn't ready for the next one up anyway.

She’s not got oral thrush and she doesn’t appear to be teething.

I’ve have been using Tommee Tippee bottles since the very beginning so there's no change there and she is on the same formula she has always been on.

She does have reflux, and shes been on Gaviscon for the last 2 months, but this problem is only been happening for the last 5 days.

Other than this she is such a good baby, sleeps through the night, is normally very calm and happy and is in a good routine so to see her so upset is so unusual which is probably why I'm worrying so much!

Any positive advice is welcome!!

How does the silent reflux affect her OP?

CatMuffin · 19/05/2018 20:43

This was teething with my dd. The pharmacist said pain killers are the only thing he found worked for teething. Ie. Calpol etc

BeansMrSeanandHeinz · 19/05/2018 20:46

My son had something similar - health visitor suggested it might be teething because their throats can get sore.
Looking back I wonder if he was hungry/ready for something more substantial - he was on a litre of a milk a day, sometimes 1300ml. It seemed to stop when he began solids.

The Gaviscon seems to have settled the reflux and she's been absolutely fine up until 5 days ago.

I didn't think she was teething, but then again I'm a FTM and all new to this, so maybe I've missed the signs.

Do you think it's worth me giving her some Calpol in the morning before her first bottle?

Could you try a teething gel?

MessyBun247 · 19/05/2018 21:16

Sore ears? I looked after a baby in work recently who was pushing the bottle away and screaming, even though she was hungry. Turned out she had an ear infection Sad

myotherbagisgucci · 19/05/2018 21:18

I've got teething gel, so I can easily try that.

Not sure about an ear infection, 🤔 as she's been absolutely fine other than this whole bottle fiasco. I was thinking of taking her to the doctors on Monday if it continues.

I’ve heard that gaviscon can actually cause discomfort, that it can build up in their stomach. Try not using it for a little while??? I have good friends who have had this problem and it worked

ew1990 · 19/05/2018 21:36

I literally wrote this post 2 weeks ago! I was at my wits end, a few posters said it sounded like a sore throat so I took her to the GP the next day, turns out DD had oral thrush, a few doses of the medication and she was back to drinking her bottles as normal

myotherbagisgucci · 19/05/2018 21:42

Glad to hear your LO is doing well @ew1990 ☺️. My DD had oral thrush at 8 weeks, so I know she definitely hasn't got it again.

I've been googling teething symptoms and she ticks quite a few boxes, so looks like it might be that.

I will still take her to the doctors on Monday, just to rule out anything else.

First outbreak of Herpes (cold sores) is usually a mouth/throat full of ulcers that are not easily seen....

Does sound like a sore mouth!

Allthecake · 19/05/2018 23:27

DD is breast fed but when she starts fussing at the breast I kind of squirt (Blush) a bit of milk into her mouth and this usually settles her down, even if she's going mad. Worth a try maybe?

myotherbagisgucci · 22/05/2018 09:55

The doctor believes it's her reflux and has prescribed ranitidine.

Has anyone had experience in using this? Did it help your LO?

Allthecake · 26/05/2018 22:54

At least it's been diagnosed and hopefully this will make all your lives happier! My DS had reflux and it was awful, he was on Gaviscon and it helped a bit but looking back we should have asked to try ranitidine, I just had too little knowledge at the time. It's so hard OP, I promise you it gets better though.

myotherbagisgucci · 27/05/2018 12:41

@Allthecake it's still awful! Shes still rejecting her feeds! I don't know what else I can do! 😢

I have been in the same place...gaviscon, ranitidine and lots of meds. Apparently gaviscon is one of the medicines that may stop suddenly working at some point. That is why probably your doctor prescribed ranitidine. However it might take up to a week to work that's why you haven't seen any difference yet. Just try burping a lot before even offering a bottle. Try to look for a position which is most efficient for your baby...for me it was putting her on her tummy on my knee.

Fatted · 27/05/2018 20:44

DS1 started doing this around 3 months. It was because of silent reflux. We switched to reflux milk. GP prescribed ranitadine which made a huge difference. We also weaned early. Blush

myotherbagisgucci · 27/05/2018 20:45

Thanks @Beemommy I'll try anything!! I know it's not her fault, but I dread feeding her!

OP posts:
myotherbagisgucci · 27/05/2018 20:47

@Fatted my HV has told me to start weaning. We've started on the purée's, but she still needs milk throughout the day, which she just screams through! 😫

OP posts:
Fatted · 27/05/2018 20:53

I know it's difficult to get through the milk feeds. And the screaming before hand. But honestly, it was really good when we started weaning. He quickly took to eating solids and naturally cut down his milk feeds. The ranitadine did help with his milk feeds as well.

If you haven't done already, do consider changing formula. Aptimal made DS1 so much worse. Make sure you keep your LO as upright as physically possible, especially for as long as possible after a feed. I also found gripe water before a feed was quite good too. I think it has some kind of antacid in it as well.

tattiehat · 27/05/2018 20:55

Definitely sounds like silent reflux to me, my DD done this as a baby, ranitidine sorted it out

myotherbagisgucci · 27/05/2018 20:58

Thanks @Fatted I hadn't thought of gripe water, but I'll definitely give it a go!

She used to be on aptamil colic and comfort, but we've switched her to SMA comfort. I've had most luck with that one, we did try SMA comfort and SMA soya, both of which she hated.

We'll continue with the weaning also and hopefully it won't be long until she's got the hang of swallowing the purée's.

OP posts:
myotherbagisgucci · 27/05/2018 20:59

Sorry I meant SMA reflux, she wasn't keen on.

My dd did this around the same age and refused to drink for what felt like ages. It was teething... although the teeth didn't actually appear until weeks later.

Beemommy · 27/05/2018 22:24

Forgot to add! You might feel skeptical about it but just give it a try. MAM bottles made a big difference for us. It was advised by one of the hospital consultants DD was staying in.
