Baby Screams when I put bottle in her mouth!! Help needed!!

Hi

I just wondered if anyone else has experienced this and figured out the cause and a solution as its starting to get me worried!

My DD is five months old and has always bottle fed with no problem. But recently the second I put the bottle to her mouth she screams, kicks, punches and just goes bat shit crazy. She doesn't even try and suck, it's literally the second the teat goes in her mouth. I then spend the next half hour swapping between dummy and bottle, and eventually she will take the bottle and finish it, so she is obviously hungry.

I’ve tried winding, and I’ve tried the next teat up in case she is getting frustrated but this only seems to escalate the problem.

She is on number two teats and when she does feed she doesn't seem to struggle with it so I'm guessing she probably isn't ready for the next one up anyway.

She’s not got oral thrush and she doesn’t appear to be teething.

I’ve have been using Tommee Tippee bottles since the very beginning so there's no change there and she is on the same formula she has always been on.

She does have reflux, and shes been on Gaviscon for the last 2 months, but this problem is only been happening for the last 5 days.

Other than this she is such a good baby, sleeps through the night, is normally very calm and happy and is in a good routine so to see her so upset is so unusual which is probably why I'm worrying so much!

Any positive advice is welcome!!

I've already swapped all my TT bottles for MAM ones. They worked perfectly for one afternoon and then she went back to rejecting her feeds. 🙄

The ranitidine will take a while to kick in. In the mean time try and feed her quite upright and tilt her cot. My dd only recently outgrew silent reflux at 20 months! She was on ranitidine and omeperazole. Do not give acid foods eg tomatoes, citrus etc as that's aggravated reflux. Although weaning helps most babies, it didn't help mine. I'm only saying that as I had all my hopes pinned on that that when it didn't make any difference I was so so disappointed and was very low for a while. We used dr brown bottles so she didn't take in extra air.

When my reflux dd was weaning I made rice pudding and semolina with formula. She couldn't have Comfort milk because she was an exorcist style puker and the thicker milk used to separate in her stomach and she'd choke on the water as it came back. Gaviscon reduced the vom, ranitidine increased it to epic proportions.

By feeding her formula in food I knew she was getting the nutrition. She also had lots of cheese for the same reason. Cheesy peas were a firm favourite as was broccoli cheese. Cheese sauce made with formula with white fish etc.

I also started giving cups of formula in the high chair once she could sit up. I missed the snuggly bottle feeds but she drank it better, screamed less and didn't puke as much so it was worth it.

Have you tried Hipp Organic? I’ve seen a lot of good reviews on here about it and my cousin switched to it and swears by it.

myotherbagisgucci · 30/05/2018 21:54

Yeah I've tried that and she just screamed through it!

I don't want to tempt fate, but she's now on SMA anti reflux, Gaviscon & Ranitidine and today has been a good day! 🤞🏼🤞🏼

Hi five for the good day! Do you think a sippy cup or maybe even a doidy cup instead of a bottle might help? I know she’s young but if nothing else works it might be worth a try.

abbsisspartacus · 31/05/2018 22:07

Fruit puree used to make ds worse I used baby rice and nothing but until six months it worked

MollyHuaCha · 31/05/2018 22:17

I was going to suggest a cup, but I see some pp have already suggested it. That's what I would try.

myotherbagisgucci · 31/05/2018 22:34

I got a Diody cup from my HV. On a friends recommended I changed my TT bottles to MAM ones and they've made a huge difference.

Each day is getting easier and easier, so it looks like this is all working.

I've started the weaning process, but I'm going to go slow as I don't want her reflux to flare up again.

Is she on iron supplements?

myotherbagisgucci · 31/05/2018 22:40

No.

She's on Gaviscon & Ranitidine.

Did GP look in her mouth? Check for thrush or sore gums?

myotherbagisgucci · 31/05/2018 22:53

Yes, she's been fully checked by the doctor. Like I said, things have improved hugely since I wrote this post.

The introduction of Ranitidine has helped vastly, but it did take a week before I noticed any considerable difference.

Reflux is nasty, yoghurt was a no no for a time vitamin drops too, just tipped the tummy over the edge. Soon you will be weaning, the stomach muscles strengthen when they sit up and it will be a distant memory.

Cannockcanring · 31/05/2018 23:06

I'd also suggest you stop putting the teat in her mouth, and just hold it near, or touch her lip, so that she can choose to take it. It might be partly that she's developing her own ideas a bit as she gets older :-). I wouldn't like having anything pushed into my mouth by someone else, even if it was chocolate Grin

myotherbagisgucci · 31/05/2018 23:11

@Cannockcanring not sure why you thought I push the teat into her mouth! 🙄

The thread title says that you 'put bottle in her mouth' OP, that's why I thought you might be placing it in rather than letting her decide....
I admit I assumed it was the teat end - if you're putting it in sideways, or the blunt end first, I think we may have found the problem Grin!

Beemommy · 01/06/2018 03:02

Well sometimes you just have to push... My little girl is almost 1 year old and is still wearing some of 3-6 months clothes. If I wouldn't push the teat into her mouth every time she would be half the size.
