dd1 has very strong tastes in music, prbably mine and dh influence in her early days, as we were often dj-ing in the living, vast vast record collection, ranging from d+b, hardcore, mellow, trance etc etc. lately we havent been listening to this stuff, and in my car is my chemical romance, james morrison, paulo nuttini etc etc. she asked last night for MCR album in her room.

is 7 too young to have their own cd collection? i know this sounds totally stupid, but i think MCR may be too old for her.

I don't know MCR but unless the lyrics were offensive, sexist, homophobic, racist or similar then I would prefer her to listen to something a bit cerebral rather than "barbie girl" type kiddie pop.

misdee · 17/05/2007 13:22

some of its quite dark.

keep trying to steer her to the softer stuff, but i think the early influence of hard beats has turned her a bit darker music wise

this is one of the softer ones which she likes this week

Nowt scary there, rather liked it myself. Was talking with friends the other day who expressed horror at the thought of her 5 yr old growing into a 15 yr old goth. I on the other hand would prefer a 15 yr old goth than a 15 yr old in mini skirt obsessing about boys and boob jobs.

misdee · 17/05/2007 13:30

oh i think dd1 might turn emo, dd2 at 4yr olds already wants her hair dyed red. so quite possibly the both of them.

dd1 walks around with arm warmers on. i think its time to let her choose her own clothes as well.

emo?

ledodgy · 17/05/2007 13:36

You do know she'll rebel though as soon as she hits her teens and start liking the then equivilent of Westlife don't you?

Walnutshell · 17/05/2007 13:37

I think MCR is one at the softer end of it's market, my DH refers to it as "rock for kids!" along with several other bands. This is not a slur (I have this album) but recognition that there are some good bands for kids as well as adults to enjoy. Can't remember if there's any/much swearing on it though...

Walnutshell · 17/05/2007 13:38

ledodgy - ugh, shiver at thought.

misdee · 17/05/2007 13:38

yup

shall i just go with it then?

and allow sparklygothkat to introduce them to some even darker stuff

misdee · 17/05/2007 13:39

walnutshell, couple of songs do have swearing in. i dont have the kiddies edit

suppose it could be worse, she could like slipknot or something.

they also love greenday

Is it just swearing or is it plain unsuitable subject matter? I would maybe worry about some of the emo content for a 7 year old but I don't know this band well enough to make a judgement

ledodgy · 17/05/2007 13:42

Yes go with it my dd is the same. She had one of her biggest tantrums at 2 years old because I wouldn't play the Scissor Sisters 'Laura' for the third time running. She threw herself on the floor screaming "I want the Scissor Sisters" over and over. My friend who was there at the time was quite impressed!

tombley · 17/05/2007 13:42

oh god I saw Slipknot at the Reading Festival a few years ago (accidentally - we were there for the manics i think). I've never been so scared of a crowd in my life. Boiler suits and gimp masks were the order of the day IIRC.

pinknfluffy29 · 17/05/2007 13:48

my dd (7) loves hip hop and has akon and snoop dogg cds. id rather he listen to music than watched an 18 film. he has his own taste and im glad he does. do kids really take notice of the words??? i remember getting smash hits for the words so i didnt look like a loon trying to sing to easy lover by phil collins and phil someone else!!! how old am i????

tombley · 17/05/2007 13:50

Shes an easy lover,
she'll break your heart but you wont feel it
Shes like no other,
before you know you'll be on your knees

Loved that when i was 7!
MCR has to be better than that??

misdee · 17/05/2007 13:55

thats it as well franny, some of the content maybe isnt suitable. i wont teenagers in the car with any other children there, as i dont know other parents views

Misdee What is emo?

misdee · 17/05/2007 14:08

emo

OP posts:
Walnutshell · 17/05/2007 14:12

Ah, yes, shame the kiddies edit hasn't quite been released.

Well, bugger it, it's not like they won't hear swearing! (But ask me again in 5 years...)

Now Greenday, that should be positively ENCOURAGED. Ds was at his first Greenday concert when I was 6mo pregnant... So, on balance, yep, do it!

tombley · 17/05/2007 14:12

Ah! I live very near a secondary school and higher ed college and a lightbulb has just gone in my head. (I've been calling them Goths all this time, when they are quite clearly emos, oh the shame)

misdee · 17/05/2007 14:17

dh encourages as much greenday as possible.

must be done.

now on the emo subject, 4 year old dd2 wants her hair dyed still, the spray in stuff isnt cutting for her anymore. hmmmm am very tempted. lol. dh says i should do it at least once lol. he is a bad influence.

OP posts:
Walnutshell · 17/05/2007 14:24

Same here re DH and diet of Greenday.

I think dying of hair has to come down to whether or not it's "her colour"

misdee · 17/05/2007 14:28

oh red hair, she would definatly pull it off. it would be very dd2, and exactly the sort of thing she does.

will be a 6 wash type one. hmmm.
