Just that really. For those of you who have been outside most of the day, how many times have you applied suncream/sunblock to your lo's?

Usually around 3 times a day, 4+ if they're in and out of the pool. Me and dc only have to think of the sun to burn. Well I'm assuming dc too as they've got my day-walker skin, haven't actually put it to the test.

I do try to let them get 20-30 minutes of sun in the mornings though, always thought vitamin D needs unprotected skin to penetrate but happy to be told I'm wrong!

BillywigSting · 07/05/2018 21:01

Twice today, once in the morning, he was kept in early afternoon /late morning when the sun was strongest and again in the afternoon.

He was outside most of yesterday too and had four applications.

He's quite blonde though and I'm a bit paranoid about him burning. He's four.

Grobagsforever · 07/05/2018 21:01

Only once all bank holiday weekend. Despite being pale we never burn.

I've been trying to apply it (or getting them to, with help) every hour or so over the weekend so probably about 4 or 5 times each day.

corcaithecat · 07/05/2018 21:04

None. DS never went outside all day. It was shit weather here. Sad

birdsdestiny · 07/05/2018 21:07

None. Thank god I am not the only one.

SleightOfMind · 07/05/2018 21:17

I p20 too for the DCs who have a lot less melatonin than me.
Brilliant stuff. We’ve come back from the tropics and the DCs have spent all day in the sea/pool with no tan lines. No reapplying and it’s not sticky.

Then I give the DCs spray bottles of the Nivea blue kids stuff and promise chocolate to anyone that gets gingery blond, DH on his:
Neck: 2 buttons
Ears: 10 buttons
Nose: 4 buttons
Calves: 2 buttons
Top of foot: 1 button.

Once at 11ish (15 mo) and only because it was properly hot.

I keep her out of the sun during the hottest part of the day (easily done due to lunch and afternoon nap). The garden is mainly south facing so we are in the sun most of the day, I've got a great big umbrella up over the table so sun exposure isn't constant for whoever is outside.

She naps 8.30 - 10.30am and then 2pm - 3.30pm so there's only really the time between morning nap and lunch that I see as the 'danger' time. By the time it gets to 3.30 - 4pm the bits of garden her play equipment is in are largely in shade and so put a long sleeved top and a hat on her instead of cream.

DD spends at least 2 hours a day playing outside every day (rain or shine) so is starting to build up a healthy glow just from general day to day gradual exposure.

I think we have gone a bit cream crazy at the expense of sensible attitudes towards being out in sunlight in this country.

stealthbanana · 07/05/2018 21:28

Every couple of hours. But I am from a country that is much more sun aware than the UK. The sun was STRONG today!

Twice - thoroughly before they went out at 11, then they came in for an hour at 1, then topped up for their 2-4 session! They were fast asleep by 5.45pm!

mumonashoestring · 07/05/2018 21:31

Twice - he's fair skinned and it was boiling here. F50 4* applied once in the morning, and once after a midday shower before a garden party.

NSEA · 07/05/2018 21:31

4 times between 10 and 4. I am amazed that some just do once or twice. Perhaps I’m over doing it!

SaturdaySauv · 07/05/2018 21:31

Twice- factor 50 and she wore a hat.

CrackingEggs · 07/05/2018 21:33

Factor 50 this morning on the bits that showed and then long sleeved and legged sun protection outfit. I'd have liked to do her face again but didn't see her till 4 ish- 10 year old out with friends.

The once a day stuff doesn't work according to Which.

UnimaginativeUsername · 07/05/2018 21:36

3 times with factor 50. Once before we left the house. Once at about 11 and then again at 1. We did spend quite a lot of time in the shade and he had a hat. He’s also not that little (8).

StairPillar · 07/05/2018 21:38

Twice.

MerryDeath · 07/05/2018 21:39

3x i think (possibly 4). he's only 1 and i am sooooooo paranoid about him getting burnt.

bettyboo40 · 07/05/2018 21:45

Once at about 10 am. It was P20 factor 50 and lasts all day. They were out in the sun a fair bit too. I had a melanoma removed a couple of years ago so I am a little bit paranoid as I burnt as a child.

TalkinPeece · 07/05/2018 21:47

nil - vitamin D is essential for health, most suncream is toxic muck

shade is saer

SleepingBooty · 07/05/2018 21:51

Once, factor 50 around 11ish. But they were in and out of the sun all day.

Phimosa · 07/05/2018 21:53

None, DD was naked outside between 9-11, came in for lunch, went out again about 12.30, played in shade/sun/shade sun until 5ish

Not burnt or red at all. I don’t use sun cream or those awful sun suits. I do make an exception if they are in the water all day on holiday. But even then would rather use zinc cream on cheeks/shoulders/nose

CakesAreGreat · 07/05/2018 22:00

Ok great I feel a bit better as I was worried I wasn't doing it regularly enough. My son was outside in the garden first thing for an hour or so without any on and then I put factor 50 on at 10:30 then topped up at 2:30ish. The garden is south facing so gets a lot of sun and he doesn't stay still long enough to know he's safe in the shade. I wasn't sure if I was being complacent as he doesn't really burn, my husband is Turkish so ds goes olive/tanned.

OP posts:
howrudeforme · 07/05/2018 22:04

Loads of times.

Ds is olive skinned and tans easily and no red. Me too and I’m darker skinned and have had a carcinoma as had my Asian mother.

For those of you who think sun protection isn’t important as there’s no going red in your family - good luck with that..., 🤔

SaltySeaBird · 07/05/2018 22:05

Three times, factor 50 good quality. First thing about an hour before we went out, about 10.30am and then again at about 1pm. Neither look like they have been in the sun, my DD has quite an olive complexion but my DS is very fair and pale although he has never been burnt or even red from being in the sun as both me and DH are very cautious.
