Perfect prep worth it?

Debating whether or not to buy a perfect prep machine. Are they really worth it? Anyone who doesn't use one, how do you make up and store bottles? Especially for the nighttime feeds as I can't go back to making one up every time baby needs fed!

I love my perfect prep; the odd time I was away it was such a fuss to make them fresh as they say to do it or even warm pre made ones up (which they say you shouldn’t) that I started taking mine everywhere I went

CheshireSplat · 26/04/2018 21:58

Every. Single. Penny!

happymummy12345 · 26/04/2018 22:06

I don't see the point or need for it at all. (What did people do before it was invented?)
I always made in advance and stored them in the fridge, as did my mum. Refill kettle with fresh water, boil it and wait 30 minutes for it to cool to correct temperature, pour water in, add powder, put on lids and shake. I then left them to cool naturally at room temperature until they were cold. Then I put them in the fridge, where they can be kept for up to 24 hours.
To warm them at home I simply used a plastic jug and boiling water. When out I had a bottle warmer, which was basically a flask that you filled with boiling water before you went out, and the lid acted as the jug- you poured the water into the lid and put the bottle in it to warm up. So simple and easy.
Sorry but to me a machine to make a bottle is sheer laziness

I have twins and I never used one. I had lots of bottles but I made the bottles up and used them for up to 12 hours. I was able to take the bottle and separate formula out and about
Mine never liked warm milk so I didn’t have the issue of heating

But there are always loads on sale second hand so if you are tempted you won’t need to buy new

Bananarama12 · 26/04/2018 22:49

Happymummy- what did they do before washing machines? Pfffft. Hate that comment.
OP it's not laziness, they are very handy IMO.

SelfEmptyingDishwasher · 26/04/2018 22:53

It makes a bottle at perfect temperature in 30 seconds! Best.Thing.EVER!
No boiling the kettle in the middle of the night or faffing about with warming bottles.
Also it ensures all the bacteria in the formula is killed by using the right amount of boiling water, which you can't guarantee using a cooled kettle.
You could replicate the Perfect Prep process by mixing the formula powder with a small amount of freshly boiled water and then topping up with cooled boiled water but honestly the machine is a godsend!

jigglepiggle · 26/04/2018 22:54

The nhs now recommends making up each bottle fresh - so it’s no longer recommended to make them up and keep them in the fridge. I would recommend the perfect prep. Making up bottles with a kettle is ok if you have a baby who is fairly consistent with their feeds but there was no guessing when DS2 would want a bottle - the perfect prep was a lifesaver - and for night feeds!

Ginger1982 · 26/04/2018 23:02

Don't listen to anyone who says it's lazy. Get one!

hilbil21 · 26/04/2018 23:04

Best money I've ever spent

LMBOB · 26/04/2018 23:11

Yep absolutely worth it. Has saved us sooo much time and energy. Even if you make up loads of bottles in advance and store in fridge it's still a faff heating up. One of the most useful baby things we've bought.

LMBOB · 26/04/2018 23:15

I don't tend to take it if we're going so whee for just a night. Then I do what I do when out and about - fill a thermos with just boiled water, take however many bottles you need and fill to a third with just boiled water. When you need to make a feed, simply add thermos water to bottle and should be lukewarm and OK for powder to mix in properly. Works a treat. I'm basing this on bottles of 120-150ml total.

dinosaurkisses · 26/04/2018 23:53

The only people I've seen blasting Perfect Preps are those who don't have one- anyone I know who's bought one thinks it's the best thing ever!

As someone up thread pointed out, it's not recommended to make and store bottles in advance anymore.

People gasp at the price, but seriously, as a new parent your time is valuable. For me, time spent making up batches of bottles by fannying about waiting for kettles to cool etc is time that could be spent sleeping or mnetting in peace.

Between using the PP and having a stock of the little bottles of pre made formula, I've never had to make formula the "old fashioned way" and DD is six months old.

I ordered my Perfect Prep from Amazon (much much cheaper) from my bed in the maternity ward after DD wouldn't latch and I read the NHS guidelines on prepping formula- best money I ever spent!

Fatted · 27/04/2018 00:04

I never had one. Personally I never saw the need. I made bottles up in advance because of the reflux milk my kids had to be made up that way!

TroubledLichen · 27/04/2018 00:09

I had one, utterly brilliant! Yes you can cope without but they make life so much easier. I used the PP at home then ready made cartons when out and about, was so so easy. Just make sure you clean them regularly and only use the TT filters and that should stop any of the reported hygiene issues.

CanalCruiser · 27/04/2018 11:30

Best thing ever. And good resale value on FB Definitely makes your life easier. Why would you NOT get one?

Wellonlyifihaveto · 27/04/2018 11:40

Get one! Best thing ever and a sanity saver during the nighttime feeds.
My oldest is 16 and I would have loved one of these back then instead of all the farting about with boiling kettles and cooling!
Best present I got Smile

AndWhat · 27/04/2018 11:41

Lots of people love them, i’m a bit sceptical as NHS advice is to use boiled fresh water from a kettle, the machine only gives a small shot of boiling water.
I make up 2 at a time flash cool and store in the fridge, my DS will take his at any temp so not worried about giving it to him warm.
Also why aren’t there other machines or suppliers on the market? I don’t think they are recommended by the NHS in the same way you can buy cot bumpers but they’re not recommended.

Brittanyspears · 27/04/2018 12:02

No idea re perfect prep but when i switched to Ff i used ready made formula. No need to do anything at all!

KimberlyS2 · 27/04/2018 12:10

I didn’t get one till my daughter was 3 months old and it made such a big difference. Well worth the money, I’d recommend it to anybody.

PerfectlyPosed · 27/04/2018 12:21

It was the best thing I bought. It was the only thing that I didn't lend out after DD outgrew it because I knew it would be invaluable when I had another baby and didn't want to risk it not coming back.

Summerdays2014 · 27/04/2018 14:02

Yes. Best thing we bought!

CremeDeSudo · 27/04/2018 15:00

50.quid on Amazon at the moment!

SallyCinnamon3009 · 27/04/2018 15:06

YES! Best thing ever we've even brought ours on holiday with us! Loads of sale second hand as PP have said. Or buy from Amazon as they are a lot cheaper on there.

firsttimebabybirther · 27/04/2018 15:09

Worth it , totally worth it!

Bea1985 · 27/04/2018 15:14

Lifesaver esp at night, 30 seconds sterile warm feed.
