I bought How to Listen So Kids Will Talk etc, because of cod's thread, and it is *brilliant*

ROFL

What is the matter with me, I can't think of a single example from my dh. I know there are hundreds, if not thousands

fransmom · 12/05/2007 21:50

ps he's 43 which is even funnier i had tears streaming down my face

glassslipper · 12/05/2007 21:52

i missed cod's thread. can someone link to it please?

schnapps · 12/05/2007 21:52

I've just found the teenage version - have ordered it from ebay.

foxybrown · 12/05/2007 21:53

"confuse the element" that is priceless!

I've ordered the book and am going to experiment with it on DP as well as the DCs.

I did buy a copy of "Household management for men" and left it casually lying around, but he didn't pick it up, so he didn't see the parts I'd highlighted about "Why you don't leave damp towels on the bed" and "how to open the dishwasher and put your cup in, rather than leave it on the counter above it". Waste of money.

PutThatInYourPipeandSmokeIt · 12/05/2007 21:58

what's the teenage version??

Is this approach 'passive aggressive'? Both DH and I suffered at the hands of our appallingly passive aggressive mothers and it's not really an approach we warm to!

janeite · 12/05/2007 21:59

I've had the book a few years and think it's great. A local curch also did a cheese and wine evening with a talk about the book. It's really useful, although rather cringily American in places. It is useful for teenagers too - I'm a teacher and find myself using phrases at least based on ideas in the book many times every week.

Off to have a google for the specific teenage one now; didn't know there was one so thanks for that.

terrywogan · 12/05/2007 22:17

is this it.
said to my dd I bet you can't put your pyjamas on.
she is 9, laughed and said That means you want me to put my pyjamas on.
AND my other DD keeps annoyingly blowing raspberries, i said i bet you can blow raspberries all night, and she stopped,
is that the idea?

Gobbledigook · 12/05/2007 22:21

I used one of the ideas today with ds2 who is 4.

Dh was reversing the car up the drive and behind the gates so he could load stuff into it from the garage. Ds2 went to the loo so missed him reversing up the drive (tragic huh!) and he was in bits.

Me: ahhh, sweetheart are you really upset because you missed daddy reversing up the drive

ds2: yeeeeeeees , I wanted to see daddeeeeeeeee

Me: oh, no, you must be so sad, how awful to miss daddy reversing up the drive

ds2: ...2 second pause....'I'm going outside.

Ha ha - it WORKS!!!!

Rantum · 12/05/2007 22:23

elasticbandstand · 12/05/2007 22:30

yes glass.
i would like a link too

barbamama · 12/05/2007 22:32

Just tried it with dp who I have been nagging to connect the computer up in the "new" house for 6 weeks:

9 pm
me: Darling, what have I been asking you to do for weeks now?
dp: Connect the computer up upstairs?
me: oh good so now I know you know what needs doing so I won't have to ask you again.

10.30 pm: Am on the computer!!

It works on dp/dh's !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

hana · 12/05/2007 22:33

am loving all these examples where it has worked
don't think it works on 5 and a half year old girls though, am trying v v hard over here with it. think she's wise to it......

foxcub · 12/05/2007 22:35

oooh I must buy it, my nearly 7 year old DS is turning into a real cheeky mutt!

macmama73 · 12/05/2007 22:36

foxybrown · 12/05/2007 22:38

Thankfully I ordered it earlier! Phew!

LittleMouseWithCLogsOn · 12/05/2007 22:42

cods thread

Pannacotta · 12/05/2007 22:44

Is 2.5 too young to try it?
My DS is VERY wilful and getting him dressed/changing his nappy can take forever, also he hates being asked/told what to do. Any ideas?

LittleMouseWithCLogsOn · 12/05/2007 22:45

stick to rules and routines
warn him of what you are going to do for that day
reinfoce it
let him have a 5 minute warngin before you shcange activity

do not negotiatie endlessly

ro beg
