Baby swimming clothes?

Help please, new mum and no idea what a baby wears in the swimming pool? A friend recommended a Happy Nappy over the top of a waterproof disposable. Do babies also need a wetsuit to stay warm in the pool or is the swim nappy enough? Also how long can a baby stay in the pool?

My DS wore a disposable swim nappy, thermal wet suit thing with long sleeves and legs and one of those wraparound things. This was for Waterbabies swim lessons in a gym swimming pool. Tried him in double nappy and one swimming costume but his lips kept going purple and the instructor suggested the above arrangement. He now had lessons in a hydrotherapy pool and the double nappy is fine. Really depends on temperature of pool and how your dc copes with it.

I’ll try him with one of those wraparound wet suit things and a nappy and see how we get on. If I need to get a nappy cover happy nappy thing as well I’ll order one in time for the next time we go swimming Smile

You can get washable swim nappies to go under the happy nappy - I have used bambino mio ones that you can get in some supermarkets, or there are more options online (Charlie Banana are good). Cheaper than disposables if you swim regularly.

Thank you blue! I’ll see how we get on and if all goes well and it’s a regular thing then I’ll get a washable nappy. I didn’t even know they existed!

You shouldn't just use a wraparound and a disposable nappy without any kind of happy nappy. Most pools require a double nappy which means disposable plus happy nappy. Or disposable with happy nappy integrated into the wetsuit.

Teaandbiscuits thankyou! You’ve answered my question perfectly. I’ll get a happy nappy ordered as well GrinFlowers

Enjoy your swim!

Something I found useful was always get a bottom locker. It’s hard to hold a locker open, whilst holding baby, and get all of your stuff in. If you get a lower one you can hold it open with your leg.

Took me a few swimming trips to figure this out!

Watching this thread as we're hoping to take DD swimming in the next couple of weeks (she's 3 weeks old now). We have been given a wetsuit bodywarmer thing with no arms or legs in. So what would i need with that apart from a waterproof nappy?

SmallestInTheClass · 06/04/2018 20:46

Disposable swim nappy, neoprene nappy then shortie wetsuit or body warmer. The wetsuit needs to be skin tight or it makes them colder, so don't buy too big. Think ours came from Mike's Diving on eBay or amazon. I'd have warm clothes with a hood for when they come out, my DDs would often be shivery so a fleece top or hoody was helpful.

Twitchett22 · 06/04/2018 20:56

Ours isnt like a skin tight wetsuit its like a velcro wrap around bodywarmer thing, I'll have a google what else we can get for her

Just a swim nappy!

I will probably get flamed with mumsnet shouts of ‘ew, grim’ but we reuse disposable swim nappies if they haven’t been pooed in. Quick rinse, then stick on the line to dry. Take a while to dry as they are quite thick but it works. Only just started doing it but current one has had 5 swims so far. Better for environment and cheaper. I’m doing this with Asda ones.

The Aldi baby event starts next week and in the magazine they have baby reusable swim pants! Perfect timing! :)
