Baby swimming clothes?

Help please, new mum and no idea what a baby wears in the swimming pool? A friend recommended a Happy Nappy over the top of a waterproof disposable. Do babies also need a wetsuit to stay warm in the pool or is the swim nappy enough? Also how long can a baby stay in the pool?

I’ve been looking at the exact same thing the last couple of days! I found these on amazon

www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B008YUDG9K/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?ref=plSrch&keywords=swimbest&dpPl=1&dpID=41cPiUbaWbL&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&tag=mumsnetforum-21&ie=UTF8&qid=1522841239&sr=8-1

But not sure if little one has to wear the little neoprene shorts as well over the swim nappy?

Smellybears · 04/04/2018 12:29

I think I’m going to get a wetsuit for him, I don’t want him getting cold and babies get cold quickly

teaandbiscuitsforme · 04/04/2018 14:40

Are you going to a proper baby class? If so, the pool will be very warm so disposable swim nappy (or cloth if you prefer) plus a happy nappy is fine.

If you're going to a normal pool, the Splash About happy nappy wetsuits are fantastic. My DC have both been very warm in them. Then you just put the disposable/cloth swim nappy underneath.

We will be going to a children’s centre pool which is apparently nice and warm.

Careylisa · 04/04/2018 15:07

Mine wears a nappy cover and a bodywarma. Even if it’s a warm pool there can still be a bit of a chill, so I find these work well.

Mine always wear a wetsuit over their swim nappy ( not a disposable one).

Water will chill them, they need to be kept warm.

overmydeadbody · 04/04/2018 15:11

I use ones with arms and legs, not just the body suit

bassackwards · 04/04/2018 15:22

You need a waterproof nappy (eg Huggies 'Little Swimmers') plus a neoprene swim nappy (eg Splash About 'Happy Nappy'). This is all my baby has been wearing for her swimming lessons, which has been fine because the water is set at a slightly warm temperature. For cooler temperatures you should look at the Splash About wetsuits.

Have fun! 💦

Thank you!
I’m gonna be going by myself so as Grumpypantz has asked, any tips?! Do you take babies towel out to the pool so you can wrap them up straight way? Also shower wise, what happens?! Or do you bath baby when you get home and shower yourself once home?

bassackwards · 04/04/2018 16:41

Yeah I keep a big fluffy towel poolside so that I can wrap DD up as soon as we get out. It's torture going into the freezing cold changing room without a towel wrapped around us!

Re showering after - I don't bother. We just get dressed ASAP and get outta there. DD has a bubble bath every night so I figure that's sufficient. But if you or your DC is particularly sensitive to chlorine then a quick rinse right afterward might make sense.

Anyway, I'm sure you'll figure out your own routine pretty quickly.

Smurfy23 · 04/04/2018 21:31

Check the temp of the pool. One childs pool near us is quite warm so you you just need a swim nappy and a normal swimsuit. Another one is quite a bit cooler so i use one of those wetsuit material ones when we are there to keep her warmer.

Smurfy23 · 04/04/2018 21:33

Also agree- get dressed and out ASAP. Do them first. Strip them quickly and dry so they dont get too cold. Dd uses a dummy and i hadnt brought one the first time we went (she was about 2 months old) and she screamed the place down. I have never done that since! Bring easy clothes for you to put on too like leggings/jogging bottoms just so its quick!

Mumtothenipper · 04/04/2018 21:36

Definitely get a wetsuit, the more of the body it covers the better. My baby was always cold in the pool and then would cry and fuss, the wetsuit made a massive difference. (She is now a 5 year old mermaid!)

venys · 04/04/2018 21:38

Most pools insist on a double nappy system. Happy Nappy is good but the kids outgrow then very quickly - my average sized little girl outgrew the biggest liner at around 18 months I think, the wetsuit was fine until around 21 months. All kids are different with temperature. Two of my kids would get very cold in the pool so they need a wetsuit. None of the others in the class need one!! Now age 2, I use a Poppolini Swim Nappy which are bigger and have buttons to open them either side should there be an accident. And a toddler wetsuit.

venys · 04/04/2018 21:39

We have towels poolside but we both shower before towel and get dressed. Warms us up.

FizzyFeet · 04/04/2018 21:50

Not for in the pool specifically, but for changing rooms afterwards - a towelling dressing gown for you and either one for DC or a towelling hooded poncho thing. Dressing gown is so much more practical than trying to keep a towel wrapped round yourself while you dry and clothe the baby, or attempt to prevent them escaping the cubicle! Also bring a distracting toy and a snack to keep them occupied while you get changed.

Orangedaisy · 04/04/2018 21:55

Look on eBay for baby wetsuits/body wraps. Way cheaper and second hand are often in really good condition as they are robust in nature so even after lots of wear have a lot of use in them.

I recommend getting you dressed before baby-wrap them in towel, give toy or snack and speed dress yourself, then do them. Much easier you being dry when they are wet iyswim than vice versa. But try both out and see what works for you.

Eesha · 04/04/2018 22:02

I’ll be going for one to one lessons with twins so very nervous, I’m not a confident swimmer myself! It sounds like wetsuits are the best option for 18m year olds?

Smellybears · 05/04/2018 09:36

With the popolini, do you then wear anything on top? Thank you!

Cutesbabasmummy · 05/04/2018 09:52

My son started at 4 months and as he does lessons he has to wear a disposable swim nappy and a neoprene happy nappy, As he was skinny he also had a "warm in one" suit to keep him a bit warmer. I think they are made by splashabout - you can get them on Amazon. If you have a chunkier baby they may be ok without.

KittyB52 · 05/04/2018 10:14

The wetsuit style suits are best - I like the Sainsburys TU ones, you can find them cheaply on Ebay.

I found them great for keeping DD warm and also for extra grip on a soggy, wriggly, splashing baby. Grin

Madeline18 · 05/04/2018 10:19

Disposable swim nappy then a material swim nappy over the top here. Long sleeve togs if in the outdoor pool or sometimes in the main pool. Handy tip- if you have togs on them, it's much easier to take them off in the pool just before you hop out.

Smellybears · 06/04/2018 07:50

So if I get a wetsuit can I just put him in a swim nappy? The thing that’s putting me off the neoprene short things is getting them off when wet, they look a real faff!
