When did you REALLY stop bottles?

So, I know you're supposed to stop at 12 months, but dc (18mo) is on allergy milk (which tastes gross out of a cup) and doesn't eat well, so is still having 4x6 oz bottle a day.

I'm just wondering when other ppl really gave up bottles and whether this will really do any harm?

Stopped all daytime bottles at 12months, (the week off 1st birthday) currently 13months and having a bedtime bottle only don't think lo needs it as such just using up what formula I have once that is done will stop completely.

Lilonetwo · 28/03/2018 10:10

Also- how do you give milk in a sippy cup without it going mouldy? It's such a pain to dismantle and clean each time. Also I'm not convinced I'm cleaning it thoroughly enough.

FoofFighter · 28/03/2018 10:11

DC1 10mo as we moved house to a sleepy backwater on a Sunday morning, (Bank hol weekend) and somehow managed to lose the bag of bottles, and no way to replace til the Tuesday, and after that the hard part was done so I continued with a sippy cup.

DC2 about 2.5 I think. just the bedtime one.

DC3 self weaned around 10-11m - CMPA baby who wasn't keen on prescription formula, went on to long life soya milk instead that they took from a cup.

Dc eats enough food - just not a variety- hence not wanting to give up bottles

DD1 was off of bottles around 20 months... then DD2 arrived about 7 weeks later and we caved and let her have one back for bedtime. We eventually got rid about 2y 3months-ish.

DD2 will already drink formula from a sippy cup aged 8mo, so we'll be making the switch as soon as we can.

Momo18 · 28/03/2018 10:20

12 months with all mine.

This thread has made me feel so much better! My son is 13 months old. I tried when he turned 12 months but my son wasn't having it. He's soooo stubborn. We tried day time bottles from 10 months but flat out refused. He even started checking to see if it was water or milk in the cup before drinking it! We've tried countless of cups as well. Spoke to my HV and she said not to worry as he only has two bottles of milk a day, teeth brushed regularly, and drinks plenty of water from a sippy cup. She also said it's best to avoid changing it at bedtime especially so as not to get him to worked up before bed. So, I'm just going with the flow at the moment and will try again in a few months.

DS1 is 3.6 months old and still has one bottle after tea, he is very attached to his bedtime bottle. I brush his teeth twice a day every day and seeing as he's never had a dummy, I don't worry about it. If he keeps wanting his bottle until he's 5, so be it!
DS2 is 19 months and has a bottle once or twice a day. He is much less milk-obsessed than DS1 so they might end up dropping the bottle together.

JaneEyre70 · 28/03/2018 10:26

It was around 2 with all of mine, maybe even a bit later. They were entirely breastfed until 12 months then went onto cows milk in a bottle. A little bit of comfort never hurt anyone, and they didn't have dummies. Whatever suits your little one is fine.

Thissameearth · 28/03/2018 10:28

Mine’s has never taken to a bottle so one less problem I guess...hoping to get her started on free flowing sippy cup for water and expressed milk now and again now she’s 6 months and sidestep bottles. I thought the free flowing ones looked easier than bottles to clean no? In Scotland you all get one free from HV and it’s dishwasher safe (on top rack only). I think I need to worry more about my own teeth: sugary sweets and Diet Coke are my fuel. I think my nhs leaflet also said something about extended bottle use affecting speech?

WowserBowser · 28/03/2018 10:31

17 months and still going strong. She just loves a bottle of milk. Eats well. Sometimes she will get a bit grumps and I give her a bottle and she is happy as Larry. In between meals that is. She will drink water from a sippy cup but it is a bottle of milk that still soothes her.

YouCantBeSadHoldingACupcake · 28/03/2018 11:21

7 months with 5dc. Dc6 never took to a bottle. Dc7 is 4 months but intend to stop at 7 months same as the others. That was the advice when I had dc1, and I found it easier to stop then, then my friends did stopping later

Eatmycheese · 28/03/2018 11:29

Three kids all three breastfed two year old still has one feed a day and almost five month old still ebf

My oldest is four and still has bedtime milk from a bottle. Everything else - water, cold milk, juice or occasional weak milky tea from a cup.

Steeley113 · 28/03/2018 11:32

10 months for my eldest and 8 months for my youngest. Basically once they mastered a cup I just used that. However, I’m no parenting saint, eldest had a dummy at bedtime til 3 and my 2yo still has a dummy at night.

Pickleshickles · 28/03/2018 11:38

Mine never had bottles but I still can't quite get my older two to move to open cups from sippy cups, they're 4 and 7!

InDubiousBattle · 28/03/2018 11:44

Dd was 14 months and ds was almost 3 but they were both only on one a day at bedtime. Sorry op but I think that I would try to cut down a bit from four 6 oz bottles a day, my friends little girl was the same and started to gain a lot of weight.

tvhearts · 28/03/2018 11:51

My 2yo still has milk very occasionally in the day from a bottle. But otherwise only at bedtime ... my ds is almost 4 and still does too 😳

BestBeforeYesterday · 28/03/2018 11:55

I wouldn't worry about that amount of milk, 4x6oz isn't that much - the NHS says toddlers are to have at least 350 ml of milk a day, you're giving him about 480 ml. Seeing as he eats fine, I wouldn't try and reduce the amount of milk he's having.
Your DC sounds very much like my DS1, who had a very limited diet and drank at least 500 ml of milk per day until he was 2. We never had any issues. He eats fine now - still not a vast variety, but much better than he was.

clarabellski · 28/03/2018 14:04

Around 11 months when we switched over to cows milk. I just switched the bottles for the cups at the same time. I actually binned all of the bottles so I wasn't tempted but I was lucky in that DS didn't seem to care what he was drinking out of (not like now at 2 years old when he insists on drinking out of mummy's glass)

confusedhelpme · 28/03/2018 18:21

DS was 4

Caterina99 · 29/03/2018 01:21

We dropped all but bedtime by 13 months and kept bedtime one til 15 months as we were traveling and I wanted the consistency of the bottle before bed. Swapped to a 360 cup a few days after we got back and he fussed for the one day and then was fine after that.

Dummy on the other hand was a much bigger pain to get rid of at age 2. I agree the younger they are the easier it is to get rid. And he may be eating poorly as he has too much milk. My friends DD dramatically increased her food intake when they dropped the bottles at 18m

halfwitpicker · 29/03/2018 01:23

DS stopped at 2.5.

We only used them till that stage the odd time when he was sick and wouldn't drink out of anything else.

I don't see the fuss over stopping them soon tbh.

deadringer · 29/03/2018 01:32

12 months here, but my dc all loved their soothers and weren't that fussed about bottles.

FellOutOfBed2wice · 29/03/2018 01:38

18mo still has one at bed time but sippy cup the rest of the day. 3.5 yo stopped her bed time one at about 2.11yrs after the dentist said she had the bottom teeth of a “thumb sucker”. She has never sucked her thumb or used a dummy so I knew the bottle was the culprit. But once we made it clear that the bottles were going and took her to The Disney Store to pick a fancy-shmanzy cup she didn’t even really make a fuss.

Will probably try and have younger one off bottles by two.
