I've just spoken to a friend who trained your ds1 a few months ago. She advised to the keep the pants off a much as poss for the first few days that's what I'm going to do. Now we've started I feel that we must keep going as that will just confuse him further, only prob is I've got to leave him with a firend for an hour later so I'll hve to put on him them, thankfully she has a dd the same ago so should be cool in any accidents occur. How did everyone decide on potty v toilet? I've offered ds either at the mo but is this making it worse?

Hulababy · 09/08/2004 12:49

DD is very independent and liked the idea of doing it all herself. She couldn't reach to climb onto the toilet, so a potty chair was the best option for us. 4 months later and she still uses that at home, a travel potty if out, a small toilet at nursery. She will let me lift her onto a toilet when out and a toilet is nearby.

teabag, don't worry about accidents on day one - we had about three but it got much better very quickly.
Potty v toilet - we got ds1 used to both (and also to using a normal toilet when away from home) again, before he was out of nappies. When he was first in pants we mostly used the potty, then started to give him a choice, and now (after about 3 months) we have taken the potty away and he is just using a trainer seat on the toilet. Personally I'd say if he is happy using the toilet and can manage it (its a bit more tricky) then encourage it.

wayhey!!! took ds (2.6) on big day out in London today - stuck to my guns and kept him in his 'big boy' pants... well....
very pleased to report NO accidents!
3 toilet stops along the way, when I reckoned he may be due a wee - and he was fine.
Phewee (but I won't rest of my laurels just yet!!)

Hulababy · 09/08/2004 15:09

Well done to your DS unicorn; that is great progress.

catgirl · 09/08/2004 16:00

well done unicorn's DS! Someone has mentioned travel potties - any idea where to get them, how are they different to other potties?

unicorn · 09/08/2004 16:03

catgirl - we got one, but not used it yet, they are sort of foldable (well the legs fold down) and you stick a bag in for all the "goodies" produced!
think you can get them in mothercare, or john lewis etc - this it's a baby bjorn make we have...
but tbqh I think i'd rather find a toilet for ds than mess around with a porta potty (with everyone watching!!)

Hulababy · 09/08/2004 16:07

here . You can also get them in Mothercare and Boots. The bags can work out quite dear at 10 for £2.50/£2.95. Although another mumsnetter once told me how to make my own - suing a frangracnced bin liner and a cheap snaitary towel. I mus get round to giving it a go in fact!

elliott · 09/08/2004 16:09

unicorn I've never used the travel potty for ds1- find it is easier for him just to do a stand up wee in the bushes if we are caught short out and about! He is fine being held on a big toilet too.

Hulababy · 09/08/2004 16:10

We find it useful for when we are out and about, such as in a park or on picnics - where toilets aren't that close, or there are only grotty, horrible ones. Or to have in the car. We are also taking ours to Florida with us this week, especially for use in the theme parks

Tommy · 09/08/2004 16:26

I had decided to wait until after our holiday since DS seems to have an aversion to the potty. However, just now, he said "Want do poo!" I was so shocked! I asked him if he wanted to use the potty, which he did, so he sat on it and did a couple of straining noises but nothing came out. He's now running round with no nappy on but I'm not sure what to do next!

catgirl · 09/08/2004 16:32

Thanks - we go on hols from this weekend (to family, UK based) so may have a look for one while we are out and about, but so far we are using normal potty and drain, or once had to soak wee up with nappy. May try and get ds to use big toilet, but doesn'tlike them without his seat.

PandaBear · 09/08/2004 16:35

We've got one of those travel potties, but DD, sits on it and stands straight up again, she does not find it comfortable. Has anyone else found this, and a way of getting over it?

catgirl · 09/08/2004 16:35

Tommy: follow him with the potty, obsessively asking if he wants a wee/poo/use the potty - welcome!

Tommy · 09/08/2004 20:55

Trouble is - I don't want to until we get back from our holiday! We're also going to a wedding on Saturday and I certainly would rather he was in a nappy for that. Don't want to confuse him by putting a nappy on one day and then not the next IYSWIM. I think he's probably getting ready to start but will it matter if I hold out for about 10 days?!

Morgan · 09/08/2004 21:15

Re portable potties I bought a Tommee Tippee one in Tesco on Sunday for £7.95 - the bags are quite pricey but i can see that you could make bags out of nappy bags and sanitary towels as that is just what the liner looks like ! Haven't used it yet though - day 3 today and one accident at Granny's house while playing and came out saying he wanted to do a wee on the potty having just done it so that's not too bad and he did sit on the potty twice and wee for Granny so i'm quite pleased really!

gingernut · 09/08/2004 22:47

catgirl, you can get foldable toddler seats for the toilet as well, small enough to pop in a bag. Saw one in John Lewis the other day but can't remember the make.

catgirl · 10/08/2004 15:59

Tommy: shouldn't think you will confuse him if you stay in nappies for now. When we started, he did the Monday - Friday in pants, on Sat we had a day out planned and put him back in nappies - and back to pants on the Sunday. Guess be guided by him, but in the scheme of things can't see how 10 days would make much difference.
Gingernut: Thanks for the tip, I feel a trip to John Lewis coming up! how exciting!

Fruitloop · 10/08/2004 20:21

Hi. i left DS without a nappy this afteroon and bugged him every 15 minutes relentlessly to sit on the potty. After two and half hours of nothing, i had to pop him in a pull up to pick up DD. Within 30 seconds he filled his nappy to drenching point. can you hear my teeth grinding? does this mean that he has bladder control or do you think this will be an automatic reaction to having a nappy onagain?

unicorn · 10/08/2004 20:32

now everyone has their own experience, and as ive said I am not being complacent, but I reckon it is best to

  1. leave them around house with no pants/nappy and lots of potties and toilet reminders. 2)when you go out first of all do short trips- put them in pants (not nappies) and keep on finding toilet/ and reminding them. 3)on longer trips take lots of changes of underclothes (what is the worst thing that can happen?... - they wee (or less often) poo themselves... so what ????!!!! My Key (at mo)...find toilets wherever you go and tell them- it's time for a wee... and get them used to using a variety of toilets etc... Nb.. this has applied to my son (my daughter just seemed to train herself)
unicorn · 10/08/2004 20:38

just want to add- in case that sounds too snotty- this is MY experience... and every child/parent is diferent.
(see I can by right on! )

Fruitloop · 10/08/2004 20:46

Okee Dokeee. Good advise, thanks

gingernut · 10/08/2004 22:09

Well, we had another nappy-free afternoon in the garden and ds used the potty several times for wees (with much encouragement and reminding) . He had several friends round, some of whom are potty trained so they were virtually queueing for the potty, and one of them did a tiny bit of poo. I don't know if it was ds or one of the others, but I popped him in a nappy later on and he produced a poo shortly afterwards so I think it may have been him and he may have been trying to hold it in until he had a nappy on. I've tried encouraging him with the promise of chocolate buttons and also tried elliot's idea of popping him on the potty after meals but no luck yet.

Fruitloop, it sounds to me like your ds does have bladder control. How about trying bribery? Have you been getting him to sit on the potty at all before this? ds has been sitting on it before and after his bath for months now, and he has often produced a wee. Maybe your ds just needs some time to get used to the idea.

teabag · 11/08/2004 13:15

Ds has now been running around the house with no clothes on for two days and every hour I ask him to do a wee on his potty and he does. Great!!! But now what do I do????

Sorry I'm sure the answer is very obvious.

catgirl · 11/08/2004 14:04

Hi teabag - how about put some pants on him and see what happens (still hanging around the house) if he keeps them dry and still goes to the potty then maybe venutre out, clutching potty (and a change of clothes!)?? Just a suggestion, but it worked for us.
