Aldi or Ikea high chair or chill my beans?

So I am probably jumping the gun way too much here, but I saw the Aldi high chair on sale for £20 and wondered if it's worth picking it up now? It's this one: www.aldi.co.uk/hauck-wooden-high-chair/p/065051106729200

I'm not due till June. Am I mad buying it already? Or a good idea to pick up a bargain?

Also, I'm undecided between the Ikea antilop one or this one, does any have any thoughts? I thought this looked like a good version of the tripp trapp one which always gets great reviews.

If you have somewhere to store it, go for it. Looks like a great deal.

I’ve heard good things about that high chair. We have the Tripp Trapp which was a (v generous) gift and it’s great but not sure we would have bought it ourselves as it’s so expensive.

The Ikea one is good but the legs stick out a lot so depends how much floor space you have, we don’t have loads and I’d find it annoying I think. I always trip over the legs when we use the chair at cafes and restaurants. (This may just be because I’m clumsy and sleep deprived!)

BellyBean · 18/03/2018 19:49

No! I got a v similar version of the hauck, and although some of the issues have been solved, it was hideous as a high chair. The tray is hard to clean and hard to detach to clean properly.

It's good Once you have a toddler sitting at the table but for the first year I'd also get the Ikea one. I'm so grateful I have that one now.

BellyBean · 18/03/2018 19:53

Had another look and pictures are misleading. Main issue was the crotch strap went through the high chair tray, so the tray wasn't removable (so you can't just sweep everything into the bin) and all the food got stuck in the tiny hole in the tray for the strap.

Again though, good for older so perhaps worth it then, if you're willing to store it for 18 months til you need it!

If you’re after a bargain I can recommend this from Argos. I got it for use at my Mum’s, but very happy with it and would use it as our main one at home

Thanks, I'm glad I didn't impulse buy earlier. I think I'll stick with the original plan of buying an ikea one closer to when we actually need it or perhaps that argos one. I'm not specifically trying to be cheap about it, but unless there's a reason for spending more, I try not to.

Sorry I didn’t realise the Hauck tray wasn’t removable (err wtf) and it wasn’t that one I’d heard good things about after all... it was the Safety 1st Timba high chair.

Tidypidy · 18/03/2018 20:45

Ikea one is easy to dismantle if you want to take it away with you too, so easy to clean and you can remove the tray to sit baby up to the table if you want to. We used ours for 2 boys 4 years apart and then sold it on facebook for £8!

Nope. I’m always tripping over the bastard legs too. They stick out soooo much!

INeedNewShoes · 18/03/2018 20:49

I'd recommend the £45 wooden IKEA highchair. As mentioned by PPs the legs on the basic Antilop stick out a mile. The more expensive black highchair they sell looks nice, is still easy to clean and the legs aren't such a big trip hazard.

UnaOfStormhold · 18/03/2018 21:10

We started with the Antilop (which was great) and later switched to an Aldi tripp trapp copy as a toddler chair when he was big enough to want to sit at the table but too small to use a grown up chair. We've never used it with the tray so can't comment on that but we've had good use of it.

youngerself · 18/03/2018 21:21

I'd go for Aldi one - looks so much like the Tripp trap I had and loved
I really didn't like the very padded enormous monstrosities - food in folds of padding Erghh - got rid of that asap and used a folding thing that was strapped to chair. Ikea yes it's easy to clean but legs are a pest

This is the one people have recommended as being similar to the Tripp Trapp but much cheaper: www.argos.co.uk/product/2574864

Keep an eye out for a Stokke Tripp Trap, it sits at the table like a normal chair, lasts for years and doesn't have long wide legs you constantly fall over, like the bloody IKEA one (I did once and trapped a tiny child's finger between it and a glass table, horrific). It also has a foot plate which is better ergonomically for children to sit with.

Sweetpotatoaddict · 18/03/2018 22:50

I’ve got both, antilop till toddler and sitting at main table then the Aldi wooden one. The Aldi one is fab really solid but the tray is awful we never used it with the tray or harness. Must have a look in my Aldi for one for dc2.
Aldi do crazy bargains sometimes picked up a Hauck travel cot for £8.99 a few weeks ago, it’s fantastic.

INeedNewShoes · 19/03/2018 09:52

@Foxtrot - the span of the legs is something like 2 inches smaller on the wooden IKEA chair. It doesn't sound like much but it makes a big difference. People were constantly tripping over the Antilop but as far as I recall, in the 3 months we've had the £45 one no one has tripped over it. I suppose if you have loads of space around the table that might be less of an issue.

butterry · 19/03/2018 10:44

We started with an antilop then switched to a Tripp trap. Should have just got the Tripp trap to begin with, it’s expensive but much more longevity and great design!

KimmySchmidt1 · 19/03/2018 10:45

I have the Tripp trapp and the best thing about it is the newborn seat add on - we started using it from 3 weeks and baby sits with us and watches us eat dinner without any moaning at all. He loves being at the table with us and we get to eat a leisurely meal together - it is really transforming in those first 6 months when you feel so totally beholden to the baby and can’t get any time to yourself. Plus it is lovely having him up to the table with us.

So definitely get a model with a newborn seat.

88mph · 19/03/2018 10:48

We have the antilop IKEA one, it's brilliant. Yes, it doesn't fold down, but ours stays at the table. Its practical, easy to clean, removable tray. No seams for food to get stuck in. Plus it's cheap. Well worth it I'd say.

elQuintoConyo · 19/03/2018 10:49

We had an antilop in a small flat, never tripped over it.

6yo now sits on a dining chair like an adult, no need for a booster etc.

Trilllllian · 19/03/2018 10:55

Tripp Trapp all the way. Mine are nine, nine and 11 now and still use them. No tray is the whole point as they eat with you at table..

Tripp Trapps are still in use because: small footprint, more stable= less fidgeting and rocking backwards (still relevant at 11 with ADHD), are adjusted to almost adult chair height but there’s stilll a small boost which is good for the 9YO. , oh and they still look good. What I like too is that they can be pushed nearer to the table than a normal chair - for some reason my DCs sit further out than they should otherwise and with Tripp a Trappe it’s less mess and also more engagement with the meal

AlistairAppletonssexyscarf · 19/03/2018 10:57

We had an antilop, a Tripp Trapp and also a Phil and Ted's lobster for trips out. All brilliant.
