Horrible nappy rash- how do I make it better

Hi everyone

My DS has nappy rash so bad his poor little bum is red raw. He is teething at the moment so pooing loads which doesn't help. I'm currently using metanium and washing his bum either in the shower or with water and cotton wool after each poo nappy. He screams the place down and is in so much pain, what can I do to help it heal quicker?

He seems fine otherwise, just awful at nappy changing times, kicks me away and tries to get up and crawl off, I feel so awful that he is hurting so much Sad

Should I still bath him? What have others done in this situation? Should I take him to the GP? Is there anything else I can use to give him some pain relief?!

I think you should see the GP because it depends on the type of rash. If it is a "dry" rash then a water based cream (like sudocreme) will make it worse and you'll need an oil base cream instead. But it sounds like he probably needs a mild steroid cream to clear it up first and then once it's gone use plenty of whatever cream is best.

It might also be worth switching to an eco nappy for a while. The Naty ones are great (and available in Boots). They are expensive but you might only need to use them for a month before going back to whatever brand you normally use.

Medicated talc is good. If it's that bad if take him to see his gp tho, he could have an allergy or something going on.

take him to the gp. could be thrush.

Try sudocream my dd gets this every time she has a tooth coming through. The metainium cream never worked for her.

Third vote for chamomile tea, only I went one step further (and I found the advice on here!)

Cut a muslin cloth into small strips. Soak a strip in cooled chamomile tea. Put in nappy, next to skin, overnight.

Honest to god, I was amazed. Ds2's red raw bottom was 90% better the first morning, 100% better the second morning.

Should've said, squeeze the strip out so it's damp, not sopping wet.

Our DD had very bad nappy rash from using baby wipes when she was a newborn.

We switched to using dampened cotton wool for cleaning, and fresh aloe vera juice from our plant to soothe. It cleared up within a few days, from red raw to soft skin.

Fresh aloe vera is great for skin issues, from burns to piles to nappy rash, and we ended up buying a plant for my MIL's house so that we would always have some on hand (her plant grows much better than mine, very frustratingly).

Another vote for chamomile tea.
Also, DS had a terrible reaction to both Metaniums.

We've been fortunate in that DS has only had bad nappy rash once when he was in hospital. The consultant suggested Weleda Calendula nappy cream, it has been amazing and I'd highly recommend it. I only use it when I start to see a bit of a red bum.

My lo had a horrible nappy rash and it turned out to be thrush, may be worth a gp visit. We ended up with a steroid cream, using metanium and as much nappy free time as possible. Put old towels and blankets on the floor for protection, at least an hour a time if poss.

Mine both had horrendous rashes when teething and best thing we found was to use nipple cream. Lasinoh (purple tube) make sure everything is completely dry, soften the cream (more of a Vaseline type consistency) by putting the tube in warm water for a min whilst u r cleaning. Then a thin layer spread over affected area. The important thing is that whichever cream u opt for, don't put it on too thick as this can make the rash worse by not allowing skin to 'breathe' at all
