Horrible nappy rash- how do I make it better

Hi everyone

My DS has nappy rash so bad his poor little bum is red raw. He is teething at the moment so pooing loads which doesn't help. I'm currently using metanium and washing his bum either in the shower or with water and cotton wool after each poo nappy. He screams the place down and is in so much pain, what can I do to help it heal quicker?

He seems fine otherwise, just awful at nappy changing times, kicks me away and tries to get up and crawl off, I feel so awful that he is hurting so much Sad

Should I still bath him? What have others done in this situation? Should I take him to the GP? Is there anything else I can use to give him some pain relief?!

Bepanthan mixed with sudocream worked much better for DD as the yellow Metanium made it worse.

Mavericksnoopy your right I use that on my baby it really is the best cream I've found

My DD suffers awfully with nappy rash and none of the aforementioned helps her,the GP prescribes Timodine for her which calms it within a couple of days. Hope he’s feeling better soon, awful seeing them tense and screaming at nappy time.

Timodene is available on minor ailments scheme in some trusts. Stinks but works very well.

Ring around some late opening pharmacy's. See if they do the minor ailments scheme. They can check its not infected too.

Give him pain relief too.

One of the nursery staff told me to only clean dc1’s bum with cotton wool with baby oil on it. I looked at her like she was crazy but it worked within a really short time & I recommend it to anyone that mentions nappy rash. And she meant for poos too - it really works

ByeByeTrain · 12/03/2018 20:00

We found coconut oil great for nappy rash. Also eco nappies - we used cloth ones or Katy by nature disposables, as we found many brands (like pampers) made it worse.

My little one had dreadful nappy rash when younger. Turns out it was a fungal nappy rash. He prescribed a daktarin fungal cream which was amazing and cleared it within a couple of days. I would try and see a gp

Pastaagain78 · 12/03/2018 20:06

If it’s that bad and not responding to cream, get the GP to check it’s not thrush.

randomquestions · 12/03/2018 20:07

I put the yellow metanium on pretty thick at each nappy change and usually find it's much improved within 24 hours. Then I use sudocrem at each nappy change for a day or two otherwise I find it can come back quickly even if it looks like it's cleared.

randomquestions · 12/03/2018 20:09

And I agree with the others that if yellow metanium isn't helping, I'd go to the GP as it might have become infected.

crumble82 · 12/03/2018 20:10

As others have said, it could be thrush. If it’s down into the folds it probably is. I took DD to the GP with what I thought was nappy rash and she was prescribed clotramazole which started clearing the rash up within a day.

NeverKnowWhat · 12/03/2018 20:11

Metanium didn't work for us - in fact made DDs little bum so sore!!
We went back to water and cotton wool, fully dried and then asda own nappy cream and some Vaseline. 2 hourly changes until it cleared up.

UserSnoozer · 12/03/2018 20:12

NO VASALINE. Slather sudocrem

KNain · 12/03/2018 20:15

The yellow metanium alone didn't work for DS, we had to use the metanium and then sudocreme on top.

MajestyRoyale · 12/03/2018 20:21

Don't use any creams as they will just seal in any remaining faeces (even if you can't see it), instead change as soon as you notice they have done a poo and rinse their bottom half with plain water. Also try sensitive wipes as the chemicals in baby wipes just irritate the skin more.

It's the poo that actually causes the damage so you need to make sure the skin is 100% clean each time a fresh nappy is on, putting cream over it simply doesn't help in most cases. It just prevents infection.

alltalknobaby · 12/03/2018 20:40

Making sure everything is bone dry is key for us. I bought a big pack of amazon basics flannels and use those plus I blow to dry completely.

ForTheLoveOfSleep · 12/03/2018 20:44

The only thing that works for Dd3 is canesten cream for fungal nappy rash.

rubyroot · 12/03/2018 20:58

See what you are saying about cream majesty and I think cream can stop the skin from breathing and make nappy rash worse. However, having battled with nappy rash since little one was born, I disagree with what you are saying.

The pooh burns his sensitive skin.no matter how quick you whip nappy off and I have trilled no cream. I have found that little one needs a barrier of some sort and i find bepanthanum breathable enough.

I use water and big cotton wool buds each change to clean pooh off and then dab with terri towle nappy to dry.

rubyroot · 12/03/2018 20:59

sorry pads- not buds

Venetia11 · 12/03/2018 20:59

"We" had bad nappy rash and it was thrush.

rubyroot · 12/03/2018 21:01

Also timodine is a very strong cream and has steroids in it - I would only use as a last resort.

Was prescribed this and it turned babys bum very red indeed

isadoradancing123 · 12/03/2018 21:20

Sudocreme or on prescription Timodene or nystatin

Oogie · 12/03/2018 21:22

Pop some Camomile Tea bags in cool boiled water and wash with that. Honestly it worked wonders on my DS

Hippopotama · 12/03/2018 22:35

Second vote for stewed camomile tea. Worked wonders for us. That and nappy free time.
