Anti reflux milk and the shits!

Hi all! Me again with the dreaded reflux Confused
Changed my little one (seven weeks old) over to hipp organic anti reflux on Wednesday. Doctor said I can start him straight on it and that there was no need to introduce it slowly. Anyway, my little boy now has the poops!
Shall I change him back to regular milk and use the ranitidine prescribed? Doctor said to try him just on anti reflux milk for s few days then use the ranitidine if needed.
The poos are grim, pungent smelling, one spilled out the top and sides of his nappy today. I’ve put him on number two nappies for tonight to hopefully contain the explosion!
Has anyone else experienced this? Also, I’m struggling to now bring wind up. He was on colief but doctor said stop as no need for it. Shall I put him back on it as will this help bring up wind?
Thanks all! Smile

I have commented on your other threads. I would just go back to the other milk and just go straight on the Rantitadine. It was a life saver for us.

elvisisntdead · 08/03/2018 19:54

I’d be inclined to give him a week to see if he settles on this new milk, in terms of both diarrhoea and wind.

Smellybears · 08/03/2018 19:55

Thank you! That’s what I was thinking Makingworkwork but MIL told me to just give it another couple of days for his tummy to get used to the reflux milk. Luckily I kept one box of the normal milk just in case!

I’m worried about dehydration. I’m a FTM, how will I know if he becomes dehydrated due to the poops?

I should ask is the reflux better on new milk?
If yes, definitely persevere. If no, try ranitidine

ijustwannadance · 08/03/2018 19:58

Colief gave my DD the shits.

elvisisntdead · 08/03/2018 19:58

Hmm ok. Difficult to advise over the internet. My baby has gone through spells of diarrhoea and I just offer more milk than usual to rehydrate.
But I’ve been through the reflux debacle so I know how hard it is do know what’s right! Hope you get sorted soon x

ijustwannadance · 08/03/2018 19:59

If worried about dehydration you can always give him cool boiled water inbetween feeds.

Smellybears · 08/03/2018 20:00

He’s definately better on the milk, itsbstaying down whereas before he was awful. He’s still a little grunty when put down in his basket but nowhere near as bad.
Ijustwannadance, oh dear! He’s been on colief for weeks and been fine. Took him off it coz the doctor said there’s no point him being on it.
He’s not bringing up much wind, is that something to worry about?

My mum has just said about cooled boiled water. Shall I offer it after a feed?

OP posts:
elvisisntdead · 08/03/2018 20:02

If he’s better on the milk I would persevere personally, but (cheesy phrase alert) mum knows best/go with your gut Grin

Smellybears · 08/03/2018 20:03

I’ve tried giving him more milk but he’s not interested in it. He takes 4oz every 3-4hours. If I’m lucky he sometimes takes 5ozs. Occasionally he will only take 3ozs but then wants a topup after a couple of hours

I panic at the slightest thing, first time mum and it’s all so new to me! I’ve no babies in my family so I panic about everything! Hmm

Dd is 7 weeks too. Was very colicky hence trying colief.

As long as he's bringing up some wind i'm not sure what else you can do. It won't harm, it's just uncomfortable.

ijustwannadance · 08/03/2018 20:17

I'd give water between feeds if needed.
Try not to panic, it will get easier!

Smellybears · 08/03/2018 20:23

A couple times today he’s only brought up one burp then fallen asleep. He’s asleep now, I now feel bad because he’s only had one burp and I’ve put him down to sleep. I hope I don’t make him bad.
I’m still unsure on whether I need to give him the ranitidine as well as he can be squirmy when put down, red faced and makes dinosaur noises/clearing his throat. He’s not as bad as he used to be though which I’m glad about and he’s nowhere near as sick as he was but I’ve read that the acid can cause permanent damage to his throat if untreated. I told you I’m a panicer!

ijustwannadance · 08/03/2018 20:34

Not sure about ranitidine.
Sounds like the milk is working, his tummy just needs to get used to it.

Ragusa · 08/03/2018 20:39

Seriously do not worry about burping. It's a cultural obsessions with no evidence. I never burped either of mine. In fact with the child who had a milk allergy/ reflux burping made it a whole lot worse because he was all crunched up in the burpy position.

No-one rubs my back for me when I've eaten. It just appears naturally if it needs out Grin. Same with babies.

Smellybears · 08/03/2018 20:48

Haha Ragusa, I’ve got the image of me being sat on someone’s knee and them burping me Grin I bet someone does that as a job, like a weird fetish! Shock

Makingworkwork · 08/03/2018 22:05

Medically advice is to NOT give cooled boiled water to young babies as the lack of nutrition can quickly make them ill.

You would know if he was dehydrated because he would be weeing less/not at all.

Smellybears · 08/03/2018 23:03

Oh he’s definately still weeing, mainly on me when I change his bum!!

OP posts:
MrsPatrickDempsey · 08/03/2018 23:08

Don’t give water. They get all the hydration they need from formula. It is hard to know a safe level before there is a risk of water intoxication which causes electrolyte imbalance. Just give milk and be guided by wet nappies.

Smellybears · 08/03/2018 23:37

Well I’ve just been introduced to the projectile poo, I didn’t even realise it existed! Shock poor little thing crying his eyes out whilst changing him then out it shot all over the changing unit and across the floor. He seems happier now it’s out

owltrousers · 09/03/2018 13:01

Which 'normal' formula were you using before @Smellybears ?

We've just switched from aptimil to hipp organic but its so watery it seems to make him worse!

I've been advised to try something thicker so have some SMA anti reflux to try him on.

Smellybears · 09/03/2018 13:11

He started on cow and gate but he was awful on that so he’s been on hipp organic and I noticed a big difference. He’s now on hipp organic anti reflux which he’s really good on apart from the poops!
