It is just another way of making money. You don't need to buuy a special step. When my children were litle we used teh bottom step of the stairs.

does the naughty step really work and is it really a good idea to make one particular place in the house that is deemed for naughty children?

I've always thought that it was wrong tbh. When my dd was younger, she needed to be told of, obviously, but I never had one particular place to put her. Just felt and still feel that it is not right.

I'm not meaning to start a riot here, I'm just curious to know if everyone on here agrees with the naughty step or not.

[email protected]'ve not had to use a time out place for mine as of yet (my boys seem to be too lazy to be naughty..lol)(and if they are, the threat of no football club usually does the trick) but youngest DD(T) likes to test the boundaries sometimes...so watch this space.

I guess as everyones parenting...and children are different it may work for some at not others.

Spose it would be for people in a flat, bungalow, or with a safety gate on their stairs!..lol

And how exactly do you get a child to sit on a naugty step? Mine have always refused!

in our old house we used the bottom step of the stairs.

In this house we use the bathroom for DS1 (it's a big downstairs bathroom and when we moved here he was in the habit of lobbing things around when throwing a tantrum and it was the 'safest' place in terms of things that could get broken LOL). DS2's naughty 'step' is on the floor in the dining part of the lounge/diner next to the radiator.......not sure how that came to be but it works.

Persistance! They learn that Mum is the boss and resistance is futile.

Every time they get off the step you put them back on the step and start the four minutes again (one minute for each year of a child's life) It takes a lot of effort to train children to sit on the step. With special needs children you might need professional advice because a child who is 5 with a developmental age of 2 will not manage 5 minutes.

My son also knows that if he refuses to take the punishment then he loses TV and computer for the rest of the day. If its near bed time then he gets 2 stories instead of 3.

If you are out and about you can train your child to face a wall instead of using a naughty step.

Admitally we try and avoid the naughty step as far as possible. Counting down 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 if my son is being disobeident gives him a chance to obey. He also knows that if he does not do as he is told he will find himself on the step. However for definate rules like no hitting, if he hits he finds himself straight on the step.

I do "counting to three" with DD3 - no idea how it works, but I've never had to work out what happens if I do actually get to three . All i need to do now is ask sadly if I'm going to have to count to three and she immediately does/stops whatever it is. I dread to think what she thnks might happen if we reach three, but I don't want to ask her in case it spoils things . Probably sounds a bit "School for Naughty Girls" from the other thread though .
Never used a naughty step, and don;t quite see how it would work anyway - how exactly do you pick up a thrashing tantrumming child and keep them on a step?

I've just decided the naughty step isn't going to work for our family. Threatening to remove TV & playstation is very effective, though. Counting to ten has always worked brilliantly with DS1, aged 8. Recently though, it failed and he asked "what if I don't?" (when asked to pick up a bike he'd knocked over on purpose) Put on the spot I said I'd take all the money out of his bank account. But it worked.

Counting to three or five gives the child a chance to collect their thoughts and do what you ask them to. Its a gentle way of giving a warning that the need to behave in X fashion.

Imagine the senerio, mum shouts "Put away your toys, Now!, I said Tidy Up" child is busy listening to mum and is dazed by the shouting, Mum gets even more angry and the child watches mum getting angry instead of doing what is asked. Mum decides to punish the child before the child has had a chance to mentally process the instruction.

For me counting down from Five shows my son I want him to comply with the request now not in five minutes time. It also helps to keep me calm. My son has plenty of time to react to me telling him to do something. For us it takes the heat about of the moment.

I give him praise when he does something without me having to get to the counting stage. It is very rare that we get to less than 3. (We count downwards from 5 rather like a rocket taking off)

the best one I found was 'right - where's the phone - I'm going to phone your father!' She so doesn't want to upset daddy! its not coz he's an ogre, its just that shes daddies little girl and won't want to disappoint him!

Naughty step works very well for ds1 who's nearly 3. I don't like using the word naughty, so we just call it "the step". He gets two warnings, and then he knows he's crossed the line when he goes on the step. Counting is a good tool too. I've never needed to count beyond 2.

When I used the naughty step (stairs in the hallway) ds1 used the time to peel the wallpaper . Removal of the xbox worked, sometimes for 1 day, sometimes for a week or longer, depending on how naughty he'd been. It didn't take him long to realise that it just wasn't worth being a little horror and doing as you were told was far preferable to not having the xbox.

Removal of the xbox and plenty of positive praise when he did as asked really worked and now at 13, he's generally a respectful, polite, lovely boy who often comments on other children his own age when he sees them being disrespectful to their parents or behaving like a brat. Of course, he has his moments...he is 13 after all

Bloody hell would you not rather spend the time doing something USEFUL and PLEASANT?

Why would you use a lot of your precious time and effort on training your child to sit on a step? Why not use the time trying to teach them to behave nicely in the first place?

no, no..honest in the corner of woollies this morn..and if i remember rightly it had a pic of supernanny's face looking cross on the box...lol enough to scare the kids without buying the step me thinks..lol

I bet it's a cheap plastc one too. I think I'll produce my own posh wooden one made with trees from a renewable source and organic paint. It'll cost a lot more, and look great in loft apartments.

do they really sell these steps in the shops now?? are they like the old bench's we used to have at schhol, what a horrible way to try and make money out of people, we have used "the step" afew times in my house but if we staye in a flat etc i think i woul just switch it to a corner or somethings.

can you imagine how terrible it would be if someone actually bought you one of these for a present, would let you know exactley what that person thought of your dc
