Finishing School or Elocution?

We've always entertained the idea of finishing school, never sure whether we were serious or not. My dd has now expressed and interest and wants to fit in more with her upper middle class and upper class peers. We have no problem with this but we know most classes are spread by word of mouth and don't have websites as such. Does anyone have any suggestions for good lessons or courses for her? Dd is 13.

You eat it piece by piece, putting a knob of butter on the side of your plate and buttering each small piece as you go

Actually, thinking about this, how are you supposed to mop up your soup with small pieces of bread? Surely it's easier just to dunk it in one half in at a time?

(I'm teasing).

I also want to know where boys go to finishing school so as to learn the correct buttering of rolls and consequent eschewing of triple premature fatherhood.

"Do 'upper class' boys go to finishing school?? No?? Why ever not?"

Well yes they do, of sorts. It's called a Short Service Commission in the Army or Navy

mpsw you beat me to it!
DH had a slightly unconventional army career which is why his more "earthy" habits such as uncouth bread roll-buttering weren't summarily beaten out of him at an earlier juncture. I think under normal circumstances you're generally expected to be housebroken by the end of your first term at Sandhurst.

Oh, he also got told at one point that he smoked an "un officer-like" brand of cigarette (regal king size) and thus should switch to a more civilised brand- acceptable choices being Marlboro lights and Silk Cut. Thankfully he now vapes.

'How could you tell he was a Russian spy Fortesque-Humpadoo-Smyths?'

'Why, it was child's play sir. He buttered his roll, passed the port to the right and smoked Rothmans cigarettes!'

squarecorners · 24/02/2018 10:34

Nah, your russian spies are more likely to try and chat you up in ayia napa or befriend your mrs on the beach in limassol. Also following you around in the car with diplomatic plates on. We used to get briefings on how to spot russian spies and roll buttering was not mentioned.

Apparently though a Wayne showed up on JOTAC and eyebrows were raised as everyone else was called Tom, James or Andy. He was definitely treated with suspicion.

Your russian spy probably went to Eton and Oxbridge. I'd look out for over-correct bittering of rolls.

catkind · 24/02/2018 10:42

Buttering!

AuntieStella · 24/02/2018 10:45

I thought Russian spies went to Cambridge?

The army conversations going on in this thread are very interesting haha. I'd just like to say it is my dd's own choice to do this, she's always wanted to be quite posh and eat well etc, and we're willing to pay for that if that's what she wants. She's also thinking about getting a scholarship for boarding school now, I can't keep up with her!
