Dummy's for or against?

We didn't want to give our DS a dummy but he's been crying so much tonight due to tummy ache, he's 7 weeks old and we've given in and given him a dummy. He straight away drifted off so I'm happy.

He's seems to have a bad tummy sometimes. But only for a few hours then it goes.

However, I know people are for and against them. Can people tell me why and if you are or not? I don't know anything about them so I honestly don't know why some people like them and some don't.

My DP was against it cause apparently it gives them bad teeth hit I've had to overrule I'm afraid and given him one.

My first didn't have a dummy, used his thumb as soon as he found it, and kept it in till he was about 11. DS2 had a dummy, we took it away when the dentist advised us to, approx 2. All was well for a few weeks, then he got a cold, found his thumb, and kept it in till his teens.

So, there you go...

I was totally against my little boy having a dummy now I wish I had as he sucks his thumb and I can’t take that away from him :(

Was totally against. Just hated the look of them. Knew they weren't great for teeth or speech development too.

Then I had a baby Shock

Used them to help baby settle to sleep and as an emergency soother when out and about. I believe they stopped me giving up breast feeding as I was no longer the dummy!

We followed health visitors advice and got rid of them at 6 months and had to do a couple of nights of sleep training. Within 2 days he had forgotten he'd ever had one! A few friends have struggled to get toddlers to part with theirs. They can get really attached and aren't good for speech and teeth.

If I had another I'd give one from the start and try and get rid of it at around 6 months again.

I work with Dentists and Speech & Language Therapists- they told me that all their children had dummies and they're fine to use as long as they don't become dependent on them.
