Should I expect a call from a Social worker or HV?

Last night 3 month old DD was having breathing issues so an ambulance came out for her, she was seen in A&E by a paediatrician and all is fine. I've heard that a trip to A&E means that a SW will get involved to check up on things.
However, as it wasn't an accident (such as a broken bone, cut, etc) should I expect a call or visit from a SW or HV?

Possibly a follow up chat from hv (or sw if they’re already involved. But all routine and giving you some support

AuntLydia · 29/11/2017 11:34

In my many trips to a+e with my three over the years, I have only had a follow up call from a hv once - that was after a febrile convulsion and she was just checking we were OK. So you may get something like that - it's supportive rather than checking up on you, nothing you need to worry about.

Tinselistacky · 29/11/2017 11:34

My 3 youngest had a trip each to A&E a few years ago weeks apart. 1 needing surgery, 1 needing stitches and 1 not so bad. Never heard from anyone.

When my kids have been ill asthma fits etc there was never a follow up.

Only when it was a bump and when my son broke his arm etc there was a call from the hv just ask how is dc that was it.

They also never called when we had a car accident so i think it may only be falls broken bones bumps etc that get calls.

Ttbb · 29/11/2017 11:35

We had our first AE trip, no interest from anyone at all once we left.

BendingSpoons · 29/11/2017 11:38

I think they inform your health visitor of your attendance and the HV decides whether to call you, presumably based on how worried they are. It's to check you are ok as much as checking up on you.

I’ve had 4 A&E trips with my baby thanks to bronchiolitis and no-one has contacted me

Lules · 29/11/2017 11:39

I don’t think the HV had even been told as I mentioned it to her at his 6 week check.

OpalIridescence · 29/11/2017 11:42

I got a call after three trips to a&e with my child. Cellulitis infection, a bump to head and a chest infections with difficulty breathing when a doctor called an ambulance.

The call was done nicely, asking how she was and any thing they could do to help. Chatted for a couple of minutes and that was it, no further contact.

MaidenMotherCrone · 29/11/2017 11:46

Blimey when mine were growing up we were there often, they were always coming in with some injury or other. Never once had a call from anyone.

Ecureuil · 29/11/2017 11:48

I think the HV uses their discretion as to whether to follow up. We’ve had a few a&e trips, the only one that was followed up was when DD1 broke her leg and that was only because the HV knew I was 8.5 months pregnant at the time and might need a shoulder to cry on!

Missonihoni · 29/11/2017 11:57

I'd be more concerned as to why your so paranoid about SS. They don't have time or the j retest to come out and see you because your child has a breathing difficulty. I wouldn't worry about it.

greeeen · 29/11/2017 12:10

We have been to A and E twice, no HV or SW visiting after either trip.

Racmactac · 29/11/2017 12:12

I've been to a &e no end of times with my 3 ds and never received contact from a social worker and wouldn't expect to either.

BrieAndChilli · 29/11/2017 12:15

We’ve never had as much as a phone call from anyone and over the past few years we’ve had between them various cuts to the head/chins from falling over that needed glueing etc
Once I took DD to minor injuries as she fell down a bank and bent all her fingers down.
She also had a black eye from banging into someone at soft play a few days earlier plus had twisted her ankle the day before, the nurse did question her on her injuries but was obviously sastisfied on her explanation, I was fully expecting a follow up visit as could see it looked a bit diss her having so many injuries in a short space of time (she then got stung by a bee the following day, not a good week for her!!)

DowntonCrabby · 29/11/2017 12:16

I've never had a follow up after 4 a&e trips with DD13 or 3 with DS4

We were there wish DD 3 weeks apart when she was 4 and to be honest I was very surprised no one follows up after two visits in such a short time!

mcdog · 29/11/2017 12:23

I'm a HV. We got informed of every A&E attendance, then we have a protocol to follow of attendances we must follow up, then our discretion over the rest. For example: breathing difficulties is on the discretion list, but if I had a child under social services either on CIN or CP I would follow it up.

Highmaintenancefemalestuff · 29/11/2017 12:24

My ds managed to get hold of, and attempted to drink, a diffuser. 111 advised a+e. HV rang a week later purely because she had spilt a diffuser and it had stripped the paint on her windowsill so she wanted to see how he was doing.
We have had two other trips, a broken finger and he fell and split the piece of skin under his top lip. No follow up for either of those.

unlimiteddilutingjuice · 29/11/2017 12:27

In my area its policy to follow up every A&E trip.
I got a brief phone call from a health visitor

MumOfOnee · 29/11/2017 12:49

Thanks for the replies, I wasn't worried about it, more just wanted to know whether to expect it, but sounds like it's different for everyone!

Is it an age thing - when ds was 3 he went to A&E 6 times (bumped head needing stitches, broken arm, scarlet fever leading to sepsis, breathing difficulties, throat infection and hand foot and mouth) and we never got a follow up.

For the first two though every medical professional we saw asked how it happened (including DS) so I think it was about checking out the story

Cutesbabasmummy · 29/11/2017 12:58

We never had any follow ups from HV.

blueskyinmarch · 29/11/2017 13:00

I am a SW. I can tell you that SS do not have time to check up on every child who goes to A&E. They are only interested in children who are already allocated to SW or children who have injuries which do not tally with the explanation given raising suspicion of non-accidental injury. They might look at a child who has ingested something like a drug or cleaning fluid if it was felt the parents had possibly been a LOT less than vigilant. What you are describing is a child who was unwell. No flags for SS there at all.

I can't speak for the HV. Possibly if the surgery is informed of your A& E visit they might come out but if it raises no concerns or they are not informed they won't visit.

Jackiebrambles · 29/11/2017 13:01

My DS has been to A&E twice. Once for head bump/needing stitches and once for another fall (off a chair!).

I had a call from the health visitor the next week both times.

I know they are just doing their job but it mildly irritated me. Because at the same time she asked was he attending a pre school and were his vaccinations complete? Which I thought was totally unrelated and felt like she had me on some neglectful parent list or something!

JKCR2017 · 29/11/2017 21:32

I can't say for definite but it's unlikely that that either will contact you. Breathing issues is a health complaint. They are only usually involved if there's some kind of accident and the injuries don't fit with the explanation or something like that. I've been to minor injuries and a&e with my son a few times now. My son once sucked a rim block from the toilet and I never got a phone call! Nothing has ever come of any of our trips to a&e.
