I have just found out im pg with #2 and my ds will be just under 2 when its born in December.
I dont know if i will need to buy a double buggy or use my M&P Pliko with a buggy board.
I have a lightweight pushchair that ds can use if he needs to when i go out with dp/family but i didnt know if it will be easier for me to get a twin pram or buggy borad as ive never used either before.
Thanks

If ds will be under 2 that may be a little early to start using a buggy board. My dd was 20 months when ds was born. I managed for a couple of months with single buggy and sling, then gave in and got a double buggy - oh, the relief! DD got the hang of the buggy board by the time she was about 2.6 (I think, can't really remember). We bought a dble buggy brand new, but I wish now we'd gone for 2nd hand as in reality, although it was absoutley essential at the time, we didn't use it for more than about 9 months.

My dd was born when ds was 22 months. I love our double buggy and on long walks we still use it now. (he is 3years 5 months)He has only recently started asking to walk. I've never used a buggy board but I would think that it would be good now but when he was 2 he would have been constantly jumping off it when in shops etc. Better to be strapped in I think 2 are a handful enough! Congratulations by the way!

amidaiwish · 13/04/2007 09:32

what do you use your buggy for now?
if not much, then you probably could get away with a sling and single buggy, then buggy and board once baby has outgrown the sling.

if you go on walks etc... then yes i do think you will need it. DD1 was 19m when DD2 was born. The Phil & Ted's saved my sanity. DD1 is now 3.2 and still is in and out of the second seat.

My ds is only 11 months now so is in his buggy all the time,i often have to go into town so my buggy gets used all the time atm and probably will be like that when the new one comes along.
I dont drive so im on and off buses all the time when i go out.
Mothercare have got the double buggy's on the website for £100 which isnt that much more than the buggy boards really.
Not sure what to do for the best

i say get a phil and teds, i love mine its awesome!

saralou100 · 13/04/2007 09:41

i didn't bother with the double and ds1 was 21months when ds2 was born! also a december baby i didn't really go out to start with due to section and bloody horrible weather!

ds1 didn't like going in his pushchair anyway and could manage a walk to the local shops and back... but we also don't go near any main roads really... i have a buggy board for when i'm in a rush and he uses it just fine, loves it in fact! we do have 2 pushchairs though so if we went out as a family we have the option, but so far haven't needed to actually use it!

DD1 was 17.5 months when DD2 arrived 7 weeks ago and we love our Phil & Teds E3. Does your ds still sleep/rest in the pushchair?

PinkTulips · 13/04/2007 13:51

no.

dd was 18 months when ds was born and have never bought one.

sling and single til older dc is better at walking then buggy borad (although i don't have one of these either, dd stands on the back of the buggy if she's tired)

babyonboard · 13/04/2007 15:23

I find ours ( a cheapo graco tandem one) really useful for long walks or shopping trips, but for things like trips to the local shops/park I have the younger in her sling and the older walks or sits on his trike (with parent handle). I'm considering a buggyboard but can't justify spending anymore on prams etc for the time being, lol.

It really does depend on where you live, where you go and their ages I think. I'm going to have to adjust my strategy once DD gets too heavy for the sling.

littlemissbitch · 13/04/2007 17:36

there is 2 years between my daughters and i used my buggy with a buggy board and had a seperate buggy incase we ever needed the two at once.
i managed ok like this but i remember telling my husband when my youngest was a few months old that i really wished we had got a double buggy, even if it has only been for the first 2 months it would have been worth it.

hana · 13/04/2007 17:39

I think it depends on how much walking you do
I have a 21 month gap, and walk dd1 a mile to school and back twice a day, couldn't trust dd2 on a buggy board for that distance. Why not try a sling for first few months and then the buggy board?

MARGOsBeenPlayingWithMyNooNoo · 13/04/2007 17:45

I'm considering getting rid of my tandem, only having used it about 6 times.

DD is too heavy for the front and it's so dfficult to push up kerbs and hills.

I would reccommend one if, and only if, you had a smaller age gap than mine.

dd1 was 2.3 when dd2 was born.

Double buggies are probably better if your ds is quite heavy (and if you know of anyone else who wants a nearly new Tandem pushchair, point them in my direction!)

SparklePrincess · 13/04/2007 18:51

I have a 20 month gap between mine & used a baby carrier for the first 6 months then a buggy board. Double buggies are a nightmare around town, in shops etc.

Twinmummyx2 · 13/04/2007 19:38

Hmmm.. a double pram for going to town etc might be more handy as they will both be strapped in and in one place...-on a buggy board you will have to perhaps keep putting him back on..can be time consuming.

But if it is mainly for walks to the parks etc..you will be fine with the buggy board.

I am debating at the moment too..my twins are 2 and a half and their double pram is very heavy..i am thinking of getting a pliko becasue of the toddler step...but not sure if that will work out....oh decisions!

Elk · 13/04/2007 20:03

hi,
I have a 2year 8 month gap between my two.
The cominations I have tried are:
M&P Pliko and sling
M& P Pliko and buggy board
Chicco double buggy
Phil and Ted's E3

The sling was ok for short walks up until about 10 weeks.
The buggy and buggy board combo really hurt my back. The eldest was often tired - eg when out shopping or coming home from nursery and really needed to sleep or at least sit down rather than stand.
The double was too wide for shops.
The Phil and Ted is great. My eldest is now four and still hops in and out when she wants and they both can have a nap when we are out and about.

It really depends how much walking you do, whether you go out for the whole day alot and how much walking your first child can do.

2cheekymonkeys · 13/04/2007 22:16

My ds was 22 months when ds2 arrived and we definitely needed a double. We went for a Kidz Kargo Discovera Tandem (easy to fit through shop doorways). if you really don't want to buy a double, you could get a Litaf buggy board which has two levels so you older LO can sit (facing you) or stand (facing forward). We've got one and it's come in very handy.

MoosMa · 14/04/2007 07:49

I just had another thought about this, if you want to go clothes shopping for yourself it would be very difficult if you're carrying a lo in a sling/carrier and a 2yo may not stay put while you're trying things on....

Twinmummyx2 · 14/04/2007 07:56

Moosma is right..it really will depend on how much walking you do....etc

I still haven't decided yet.....

chirpygirl · 14/04/2007 08:04

My DD will be 18 months when the second comes along. I am going to try and use a sling with the baby and a lindam seat thing instead of a buggy board so she can sit down, but I do have a second hand double buggy that I got from freecycle just in case!
I did't want to spend loads as I won't use it more than once or twice a week for walking to the local shops.

PippiLangstrump · 14/04/2007 08:07

this thread has been an eye opener. My DC n2 will arrive when DD is 2.8. I thought I could do with a buggy board but now seems very unrealistic when considering that I walk miles, sometimes out of the house in the morning and not back till afternoon.
I take it the P&T is the one. might have to sell the bugaboo...

earlgrey · 14/04/2007 08:08

dd1&2 were 14 months apart and I did use my double buggy for a long time. Nothing like a tired toddler saying "Pick Me Up" when you're trying to push a single pushchair. Having said that, I didn't use a sling so maybe you could get away with it. But it was nice when they were both fast asleep in it, settling down at a coffee bar, looking at them and thinking 'aaaaaaah'. Sort of made me feel I had some me time too.

MARGOsBeenPlayingWithMyNooNoo · 14/04/2007 10:12

Me and my hairdresser were talking about buggy boards and keeping toddlers on them. The only solution would be to wrist stap their arms to the handles of your buggy.

Do you think I would be reported to the NSPCC if I did it?

Twinmummyx2 · 14/04/2007 10:13

LOL..i don't think..that was my plan all along..just for added security!

foxybrown · 14/04/2007 10:22

Apart from the whining and whinging of being tired, I like to be able to strap mine in! Can't be doing with chasing them around shops!

So yes, a double is essential IMO. However, I've yet to find one which is great in every way. With this in mind and the compromises you need to make I wouldn't spend a fortune on one. I think the most important thing to decide is whether you want a side by side or one-behind and take it from there.

I've had some Combi one from John Lewis which is OK, but not any better than anything else for the money. Its a side-by-side, very light and folds in half so takes up less space when flat. But I prefer my Mamas and Papas twin aria. Kiddicare is the cheapest place I found for a new one. You could have mine, but I'm needing it again in a couple of months

Hope this helps. Good luck.
