OH no........

MerryMarigold · 12/04/2007 22:33

I had a lovely chat with a lady in a chemist who was looking for food with her 12 week old baby and asked me what I thought was best. I just gave her the facts about allergies and it is recommended to wait until 6 months, and they get all nutrients/ calories from milk without needing anything else before then. She was really grateful, hadn't realised that stuff. Don't need to be preachy about it, but it does bypass some people in the midst of so many life changes.

ja9 · 12/04/2007 22:36

that's a really good point mm.

Why do the jars and that say from 4 months then? Sorry, am I being thick here?

Hilllary · 12/04/2007 22:39

I knew a woman who had twins, she gave them a spoon full of nutella every night before bed from 6 weeks of age!!!!! to make them sleep

SlightlyMadSlug · 12/04/2007 22:39

Cos it used to be from 4 months...and they are going to loose 2 months profits if they change the labelling.

jacksma · 12/04/2007 23:04

It really depends on the baby, it is fine to wean from 4 months just avoid nuts etc... stick to fruit and veg, some babies are really ready to start eating solids earlier than others and get hungry - 11 weeks is a bit crazed though

hunkermunker · 12/04/2007 23:08

Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh fgs.

Twinklemegan · 12/04/2007 23:09

Heads and brick walls are springing to mind here...

Jacksma - it really isn't fine to wean at 4 months. If you do a search in the archives, there are loads and loads of threads all about the reasons why the recommendation is "from six months". It's to do with maturity of the gut.

SlightlyMadSlug · 12/04/2007 23:29

The current World Health organisation guidlines are from 6 months

The UK guidelines are from 6 months.

END OF STORY.

Littlefish · 12/04/2007 23:40

I am playing nicely LL - see how polite I was in my message below. No swearing at all from me

nallydoolally · 12/04/2007 23:55

(cannot believe this has been brought up again... how many posts were there on the 'shovel' thread the other day???)

AitchTwoOh · 13/04/2007 00:01

in a way, i think that the gerzillions of posts on the other thread suggests that Ja9 maybe should just limit herself to squeaks. personally i find it very sad but there is evidently no collective responsibility for other people's babies' ickle guts, so you just have to let them know the guidelines and then shut up.
SMS is right, that's the end of the story really.

MerryMarigold · 13/04/2007 11:32

i think some people are purely ignorant of the facts and just telling them the guidelines are not enough. a brief explanation of why the guideline exists - without being too patronising - can be very helpful.

but i wasn't on the other thread, so am not as sick of this topic as others may be!

dejags · 13/04/2007 11:35

Not again.

Flower3554 · 13/04/2007 11:40

I too have wondered why the baby food jars/packets etc still say "from 4 months"

Surely this gives the impression that its ok to wean earlier than 6 months.

Twinmummyx2 · 13/04/2007 11:53

I missed the other thread then....might go searching..but i always get lost in this place...

Guidelines get changed all the time though don't they and it dosen't help when the labelling on baby foods are saying 4 mths.

When i had my first 14 years ago it was said 3 mths was the good age and it has gradually got later and later...

Some of you may think i am a bad mum now but i had to wean mine a bit earlier than the 6 mths.....they were constantly drinking bottle after bottle of milk..waking at night etc....giving them baby rice and fruit purees helped settle them.....maybe mine are just very greedy.....not one of them has had a problem or allergy...apart from bee stings and hayfever (does that count?)..i know i am very lucky.

I think a few weeks earlier if its obvious that milk is just not enough would be fine. You just have to be vigilant with dirty nappies to make sure they are actually happening and that constipation isn't happening.

As always talking everything through with the H/V is the best way to go.xx

Come on then who disagrees !

Trinityrhino · 13/04/2007 11:55

can't beleive anyone is bringing up 'why do the labels say...'

isn't it OBVIOUS
they want profit, they don't give a shit about the babies

Sheesh
