Sorry to hijack your thread!! Dryad, yoohooo!! Where did you run to last night? There I was typing away to you...and you disappeared

theUrbanDryad · 13/04/2007 13:11

sorry, i had to dash off as we had guests round for dinner

hatwoman · 13/04/2007 13:12

in fairness TR - the question why do labels say 4 months - can't be answered so simplistically. the real - implied - question is why are they allowed to say from 4 months. People can be forgiven for being confused - it would be nice to be able to assume that advertising regulations and the Food Standards Authority and other bodies would ensure that if it was harmful they would not be permitted to say this - that's why the question gets asked. (and in my ignorance, I'm afraid I don;t know the answer)

I disagree Twinmummy.

theUrbanDryad · 13/04/2007 13:16

it's because most HV's say 4-6 months. and personally, i think a little bit of flexibility within that is no bad thing, as every child is different! it's also because they're not allowed to say any ealier, "From 4 months" is the earliet they can get away with, and i think use of the word "from" is very teling.

michaelad · 13/04/2007 13:17

oh ok...thought it was something I said! phew!! Anyway, re. your profile I've got 4 things to say to you: 1. After the watershed was always my fav. 2. I could have kicked myself for having missed the last VNV gig in London. 3. Wise up sucker rocks to this day! and 4. I went for a drink with the Neds a long long time ago...

And now I better leave this thread alone! Sorry Ladies!

Cat me if you want, Dryad!

LucyJones · 13/04/2007 13:18

I think if the govt or Who really want everyone to wean at 6 months they could make manufacturuers of baby food say from 6 months only. Then people who don't have access to Mumsnet etc wouldn't get so confused. Obviously health visitors would also have to consistently say from 6 months and not 4

JodieG1 · 13/04/2007 13:21

Not another one...

hercules1 · 13/04/2007 13:30

talking to your hv is the best way to go- sorry but I had to laugh at that one.

MoosMa · 13/04/2007 13:39

My HV told me the recommendation is 6 months but 4 months is acceptible if the baby seems to need it earlier. I weaned DD1 at 16 weeks on the dot as for the previous month she had been having 9oz bottles several times a day, was waking in the night, was sloshing so much and was constantly hungry. There's no way I could have kept her going on just milk until 6 months, in my eyes that would have been cruel to her as she was uncomfortable having so much milk in her tummy.

1/4 teaspoon of rice once a day was enough for the first month though.

MoosMa · 13/04/2007 13:41

Hercules, they're not all monsters and if you know nothing about raising babies they're better than guesswork, surely?

hercules1 · 13/04/2007 13:41

So how did 1/4 spoonfull of rice which has fewer calories fill her up more than milk? 16-17 weeks is a common time for a growth spurt.

hercules1 · 13/04/2007 13:42

none that I've ever met. If you look on these threads you'll see that an awful lot of healthvisitors and midwives know very little about weaning and breastfeeding.

LucyJones · 13/04/2007 13:44

MoosMa - presumably you had to still give her numerous 9oz bottles as well as 1/4 teaspoon of rice though? Did it really help in that month? A quarter of a teaspoon is such a small amount it hardly seems worth making it!

lulumama · 13/04/2007 13:44

you see, my hV said 26 weeks to start weaning, and not before !

hercules1 · 13/04/2007 13:45

Mine had never heard of weaning at 6 months.

theUrbanDryad · 13/04/2007 13:46

lulu!! so......what's the weather like your end then??

GibbonInARibbon · 13/04/2007 13:46

why why why why

hercules1 · 13/04/2007 13:48

Oi! TO be fair I never got embroiled in the other one!

lulumama · 13/04/2007 13:49

lovely thanks urban, off to a freind to play in the garden when DD wakes !

back to the teashop methinks!

Twinmummyx2 · 13/04/2007 13:51

I'm not sure if some things have been posted directly at me but a bowl full of baby rice and fruit puree filled my babies up nicely so they went a full four hours between bottle feeds!

Also if some of us have missed a previous thread about the same sort of subject and it causes you discomfort...don't look!

Some of us might value comments/advice from midwifes/health visitors...dosen't mean we would act upon everything that they may suggest but i personally like to get a full a picture as possible before making decisions about my children.

LucyJones · 13/04/2007 14:01

No, it was MoosMa who said she ave 1/4 teaspoon of baby rice for a month and this settled her baby.
I agree, just becaseu there have been lots of contentious weaning threads recently doesn't mean that weaning should go the way of SWSNBN does it?

MoosMa · 13/04/2007 14:19

"So how did 1/4 spoonfull of rice which has fewer calories fill her up more than milk?"

It was as well as the milk, not instead of it. Don't ask me how it helped but it did.

"A quarter of a teaspoon is such a small amount it hardly seems worth making it!"

It is tiny but so is a baby's tummy! And it's really no hassle to make compared to having a miserable baby.

I shall leave DD2 as long as I can before weaning her but I won't hold back after 4 months if I think she needs it [cowers from thrown objects, I'm such a bad mummy]

BizzyDint · 13/04/2007 14:26

twinmummy are you a regular who's just out to wind us all up or what?!

Twinmummyx2 · 13/04/2007 14:26

I agree with you moosma...nothing worse than a miserable starving baby.....its also more solid so it stays in the tummy for a bit longer i would have thought. I definatley wouldn't hold back either....and as someone else mentioned, every child is different, some can handle it earlier-others maybe not.
