I was talking to a friend today whose little boy has just started having conversations with an imaginary friend and I wondered how common this is. My eldest has three imaginary friends, called Tiptoe, Muganil and Baby Pinkle, who all go to work in the Big City every day and on holiday they followed us everywhere in a pink convertible sports car. I think i have a very imginative child!!

dd1 used to have 2 -Lissa and Norma, although Norma was a boy.
She had them for a couple of years, haven't heard them mentioned for a while.

I wish my son had an imaginary friend! That sounds great! (he clearly doesn't have such a good imagination.)

DD (5) has for the past 2 years had an imaginary friend (a mouse) called Squeaky who periodically vanishes for a while generally on some elaborate adventure like climbing mount everest, travelling down the nile, exploring the amazon etc

My dd1 used to called her left and right feet Twinkly and Joan. We used to have some very interesting conversations with them . When dd2 came along, her feet were called Poogly and Plank and she used to the very same thing! Strange

Ds had several, but Von was the main one. Sadly Von died last year when he was eaten by a giant pig.

DD (4) has had several imaginary friends, but the longest lasting, Tinkerbell, moved in with us a few months ago. She is a fairy, has a large repertoire of songs and speaks a language that only DD can understand, though DD is happy to speak it to us, too. When the TV screen is blank, one can watch films featuring Tinkerbell, apparently.

DOn't read the Marion Keyes book "If you could see me now"

DD's friend had a HORSE that came everywhere and a little frind that I had to push on the swings at the park etc. They both stayed for ages.

Muganil and Tiptoe tend to go to japan or America on business quite a lot. otherwise they sleep under ds's beds.

"Imaginary" Friends who are actually "real" sort of guardians that can only be seen by those who need them! Not a v.good book.

Nemo2007 · 06/04/2007 21:21

Ds is 3 and doesnt have an imaginary friend as such but talks to superman constantly. While we are in the car he tells me superman is flying above etc.

When my dd was little she had a 'friend' called Verican she was she said an Indian who looks just like Pocohontas.Oh the stories she had were just amazing I did draw the line at setting her a place at the table!
Intersting the point someone has made regarding guardians as Verican left us but when Bex had a problem at school a while ago she came back.

My dd had Granpa Bowl from the age of about 3-5, she still mentions him occasionally. I was freaked out at first because she use to talk about him whizzing round the ceiling and shooting up the chimney, if we came along. I thought we had a ghost! She had a very elaborate story and stuck to it.

My ds (3) has an imaginary friend, a dog called Bongie. He's been around for about a year and comes to play in our garden on a regular basis (although he lives at "House number 2, past Scotland" apparently!)- and Bongie has a friend cat called Sausage who sometimes comes along too

Trinityrhino · 07/04/2007 10:51

we have a baby sonic
and we did have a purple mouse called 'noone'

Jacanne · 07/04/2007 11:05

Maddy has 2 friends called Coli and Choli and they can do all sorts of amazing things. When we are in the car they ride alongside on their superfast air skis, though sometimes they ballet dance on the roof. They disappeared for a while when she started nursery but have come back recently.

When DS1 was 3, Mr Boo could sometimes be found at the bottom of the stairs, apparently. DH couldn't resist stamping on Mr Boo, or giving him a little kick when he wnet past. I Always stepped over Mr Boo.

Carmenere · 07/04/2007 11:11

My dd has Spencer from Balamory. I suppose that makes her imaginative but lazyWorryingly she told me that she does big kisses with him He has been with us for about a year now and is sometime joined by Josie. dd is 3

suwoo · 07/04/2007 13:19

When DD was 2 she had an imaginary friend called Amber. We never had to lay the table for her or anything like that, she just used to talk to her and play with her in the bedroom. She did say, that we couldn't see her, only DD could.
Have loved reading all the names of the imaginary friends!!

Nbg · 07/04/2007 13:26

DD has had one for the last few weeks called Gimber

At first I swore she said Gimp boy.

They go swimming alot.

linjasmom · 07/04/2007 13:27

My dd (20 months) does not have an imaginary friend yet (none that I know of anyway), but a girl I once knew had one called Alice. She went everywhere with them (had to be buckled up in the car etc.), had to get the same candy and stuff (smart move, eh!? ) and the table had to be laid for her as well. One time the girl did not set the table for her. When asked where Alice was, she said "Oh, Alice won't come anymore, she was run over by a car!"
Just had to share that story....

mummylin2495 · 07/04/2007 13:28

my son used to have an imaginary friend who lived in our fire ,his name was armadill !!! i have no idea where the name came from or when he left our house.

scrapper · 07/04/2007 16:12

OH used to have one called Bergie Orris, who used to visit him in his dreams.
It's taken me four years but I have managed to convince him it was in fact, a malignant spirit.

I'm a bad person.

suedonim · 07/04/2007 18:07

Dd1 had hordes of imaginary friends. The main ones were Sophie and Gavin. We used to have to make room at the table for them and open doors into shops as well, which was a bit embarrassing if you ended up standing gormlessly outside Woolies whilst these invicile peopel passed through!

It all came to an end after ds1 got fed up of having to accomodate Gavin all the time and threw him off Hadrian's Wall. Afaik, 15yrs later, Gavin is still running up and down at the foot of it, trying to find his way back.
