Chicken Pox Vaccination

DS is having his chicken pox Vaccination privately next week. Anyone whose baby has had it, did you have any side effects?

My DD had her first dose 2.5 weeks ago and had no side effects at all.

Sundayspilot · 05/09/2017 19:36

It's part of the routine schedule here. My boy was cross after but no more than any other injection. Our pediatrician warned us some babies get a mild rash and low fever after but we sailed through.

Good for you for getting it done. My friend got chicken pox when we were teens (this was before the shot was available Blush ). The scarring was deeply upsetting to her for YEARS afterward.

BendingSpoons · 05/09/2017 19:38

Got it booked for Thurs so fingers crossed it isn't too bad.

Dd1 was 3 and now that dd2 is 2 I'm going to get her done shortly. Dd1 had no issues --apart from a fear of noodles (her word for needle )😂

sleepisthebest · 05/09/2017 20:26

Oh good, thanks! Obviously I know there's a risk with any vaccine and have done research as it's not done as standard here (UK) but am going to go ahead. The amount of people I've had telling me I'm being precious and should just let him get it out of the way is unreal 🙄 I had it horribly as a hold, was really poorly so if I can avoid that for him for the sake of a jab (well, two) then I will.

It's eye wateringly expensive where I am, only two places even offer it. It had better work!

No side effects at all :) he cried for about 10 seconds and then it was as if it had never happened and we carried on as normal. Easiest vaccination by far.

Paddybare · 05/09/2017 20:57

Would you mind saying how much you paid sleep?

Dinosauratemydaffodils · 05/09/2017 20:59

Ds had it last year (had just turned one), no reaction and this summer his friends all caught it apart from him.

sleepisthebest · 05/09/2017 21:06

It's going to be £220 for both jabs paddybare. I've seen it outside of my area for as low as £100 for both though.

Petrichery · 05/09/2017 21:11

My DD had it at just over a year old and was totally fine, not even a crying session - just looked mildly put out and no side effects whatsoever Smile
It was £120 for both jabs in london (about a year ago) at CityDoc, but think it might have gone up since. Totaly worth it, especially as they had a chicken pox outbreak at nursery recently and i was so grateful i didn't have to worry.

ThomasinaCoverly · 05/09/2017 21:12

DD was 18 months. No side-effects at all, a wail when the needle went in and that was all. So glad we had it done: it went round the school and some of her friends were really ill.

ThomasinaCoverly · 05/09/2017 21:13

It was £140 for the two jabs, 6 years ago.

welshweasel · 05/09/2017 21:17

My GP did it for £80 for both jabs which I thought was a bargain! He had no side effects and his whole nursery class other than him have since had chicken pox so seems to have been effective!

ThomasinaCoverly · 05/09/2017 21:18

Incidentally, I now need to sort the Men B jab. Anyone had that done, and how did your child tolerate it?

bringonthesunn · 05/09/2017 21:24

I plan to get my baby vaccinated too.
Remember that if your child does have a reaction and gets a chicken pox rash then there is a theoretical risk of them passing chicken on to somebody who is not immune.

bringonthesunn · 05/09/2017 21:25

*chicken pox not chicken!!

sleepisthebest · 05/09/2017 21:36

ThomasinaCoverly DS has had both men b jabs as part of routine immunisations (he's 17 months), luckily we didn't have to pay for those ones!

He had a sore leg for a few days after, and fevers with lots of grumpiness and periods of inconsolable crying both times. We were advised to give Calpol both times just before the jab and then every four hours for the rest of the day. It did the job, but both days were rough! Fine the next day though. Quite common side effects apparently. Not sure how it'd affect an older child, these were at 8 and 16 weeks. Men C was at 12 months with the MMR and no issue with that one at all.

munchkinmaster · 05/09/2017 21:40

We did this. About £90 for two jags. I'm pretty sure it's a live virus though so you need good hand hygiene as they poo it out and avoid people with compromised imune systems for a bit.

I don't know if someone who has never had chicken pox could catch it from changing nappies or if that's really unlikely?

Barbadosgirl · 05/09/2017 21:41

My son had both varicella and men b done privately (same time) and he was fine. No side effects whatsoever.

ILikTheBred · 05/09/2017 21:52

DS2 had it. He had a small rash around the site of the first injection for a few days but no other ill-effects.

Cutesbabasmummy · 06/09/2017 10:14

My now 2 and a half year old had the new version as part of a trail last year. The new version was indicated to give children slightly higher temperatures, but he was absolutely fine after all three jabs. We only just found out which version he had. He also had men b privately and was vomiting and not great after the first two. The third one was fine.

AtlantaGinandTonic · 06/09/2017 10:22

DD2 had her first round yesterday and was OK. I think the injection site was a bit sore but she had no other ill effects. Hope your little one is OK, OP.

sleepisthebest · 06/09/2017 14:02

I'm sure he'll be fine, thank you. No jabs are nice but fingers crossed for a few seconds of pain we'll save a few days/weeks of pain down the line.

OP posts:
HeadDreamer · 06/09/2017 14:06

DC2 had both chicken pox and men b vaccines privately. She hasn't had chicken pox yet so fingers crossed it worked.

But isn't the men b now part of infant vaccination program?

HeadDreamer · 06/09/2017 14:07

She wasn't poorly after jabs for either. Just a bit of a cry at the time and that's it.
