Ive noticed thst my son has quite a red bottom and patches of what could be eczema on his skin. I woud like to try reusable nappies. Which ones are good for hard water areas and will be kind to his sensitive skin?

Whats the best detergent to wash them in? Also do you have to soak nappies or can you just rinse them of and put them in the washing machine?

Everyone has their own routine for dealing woth nappies.

I dry pail.i.e. I have a bucket with a mesh bag lining it.All nappies, trainer pants we use in a day(s) are placed in the bucket until we have a machine load full.

For us we only wash every 2/3 days but that is because most of her eliminations go into a potty. With full time nappies you'll properly do a load a day.

Breastfed baby poo can just be washed out in the washing machine, so just place soiled nappies in your bucket as normal. Once your baby is on solids you should tip the solid poo into a toilet/nappy bag to dispose off. Some people use fleece or paper liners, or catch the poo on a potty...most babys show when they are going to do a poo with sounds and pulling a certain face.

I lift out mesh bag and shove into washing machine...I wash on 40c and use fairy non-biological washing powder. Don't use conditioner on nappies,it stops them being absorbant.

Best to line dry so the terrys dry nice and soft.

You can rinse though with vinger but we don't bother. Also a dab of tea tree oil on the lid of the nappy bucket keeps the smell away.

So was I 7 months ago

I think how often you wash your nappies depends on how many nappies you have and if you wash them as a separate wash from your other laundry. We use cloth full-time, I have 20 nappies that I wash on their own for the most part (just because I wait for a full load) and I wash every 2nd or 3rd day. The less nappies you have, the more often you have to wash them. If you wash them with other laundry, you can make up a full load.

And is there a local Real Nappy Network near you to talk to local parents? See the nappy finder to find out!

Can you use nappy creme with cloth nappies?

Is it wrong to get so excited about nappies!?
I just can't stop looking at them! I cant wait for mine to arrive now either.

No - excited about nappies is gooood... keeps me in business

chipmonkey · 02/04/2007 21:51

Powder, the only thing I'd say not to use is Sudocrem, it forms a water-resistant barrier on the nappies which can cause them to leak eventually.

I got my little ewes yesterday and a couple of the wraps and the liners. I put one on my son first thing this morning and they seem to be doing the job. Think i might need to practice at making the nappy look a bit neater though!
Whats the best shaper to fold terrys into? Im using the kite at the mo.

Powder the Jo fold is very neat, no bulk at all around the legs and it looks like a Tots Bots when all done up

powder28 · 05/04/2007 18:03

Thats much better thanks. The wrap fits better too.

LOL powder, the kite fold was invented when plastic pants were still popular, people just stuffed everything in!

powder28 · 06/04/2007 21:16

My mum said she used to use the kite fold and big plastic pants that went over the top. She was impressed with the nappies but she said 'I hope youre not expecting me to put one of those on [dd2] when i babysit'
This is becasue he is really really wriggly. Youve literally got seconds to get the nappy on him before hes off.
