Ive noticed thst my son has quite a red bottom and patches of what could be eczema on his skin. I woud like to try reusable nappies. Which ones are good for hard water areas and will be kind to his sensitive skin?

Anything made with bamboo should stay soft and is naturally antibacterial. So Totsbots Bamboozles or Wambamboos or bambineos would be great. Using a fleece liner rather than a paper one would be kinder too.

Flamesparrow is our resident nappy expert and is having a very public love affair with bamboo nappies - I'm sure she'll put you right

DO IT

I started with reusable a few weeks ago, and have noticed a marked difference in ds2's skin

I use prefolds and bambino meo wraps, with disposable liners.

powder28 · 31/03/2007 15:46

He is 12 months old, and his skin has only just started to go like this. ALthough i had terrible eczema as a baby. Are reuseable ones better if their skin is sensitive?

Ds2 is nearly 12 months old, and has very sensitive skin - I still only use Superdrug bath Emolliant, and he still only has 2 baths a week, anything else or any more frequently and his eczema flares.

i wash my prefolds in Tesco non bio, as it doesn't seem to smell of anything.

It's definately calmed his baottom down.

powder28 · 31/03/2007 17:09

what size do you use colditz?

OP posts:
colditz · 31/03/2007 17:51

I just use prefolds and a toddler size wrap.

Flamesparrow · 31/03/2007 19:53

I agree that bamboo is about the best for the reasons bobsmum says

powder28 · 31/03/2007 20:02

Ive been looking on various different site at these nappies and now my brain hurts!
Which size is best for my 1 yr old. It was months ago that he was last weighed and he was 20lbs then. Also which are the most absorbent?

Also we live in a very hard water area so not sure which will stand up to it.

Does your area do a nappy trial scheme? I did one a couple of weeks ago and tried all of the main types of nappies and found it really useful. All bottoms are different...

powder28 · 31/03/2007 20:09

A nappy trisl scheme, im not sure, where do look to find out?

Flamesparrow · 31/03/2007 20:56

He is probably in size 2, or large (depending on the type of nappy).

Real nappy network (think thats what its called) will have details of nappy things in your area

maisiemog · 31/03/2007 21:06

Bamboo or hemp are both more absorbent than cotton and have anti-bacterial properties.
You could always use prefolds and if you feel he needs more absorbency, buy some boosters made of bamboo or hemp. Boosters are just extra layers of fabric, sewn into a rectangle or hour-glass shape, they can be inserted into the nappy or placed outside between the nappy and the waterproof wrap/cover.
I used prefolds on my ds for about 6 months and they are pretty foolproof, cheap and dry fast.
Some people have trouble with them on newborns, as they don't have elastic to keep in the liquid poop, but past weaning this is not such a problem.
I personally think they are a better fit when used with a nappi nippa.
There is a photo of my ds wearing his nippa'd prefolds on my nappy review blog .
You could always do what I did, which was to buy some prefolds and get used to the whole thing and then try shaped nappies, one at a time and then sell on the ones you don't like.
Hope that helps a bit

I rang my local council

powder28 · 31/03/2007 23:56

Ok ive ordered some bamboozles and fleece liners and boosters.
Is there anything else i need?

chipmonkey · 01/04/2007 01:07

Powder, you will need wraps for the bamboozles!
I like Motherease Rikki wraps and wacky wraps!

chipmonkey · 01/04/2007 01:08

I like Bumgenius nappies and Fuzzi bunz as well, good for daytime, will fit under skinny clothes!

chipmonkey · 01/04/2007 01:08

Don't buy birth to potty packs either unless you have tried a few nappies.

powder28 · 01/04/2007 06:49

Its a pack of five with a wrap already included. Ill see how i get on.

I live in a very hard water area, and white vinegar in the conditioner drawer at every wash helps.
Drying on the line is better that an airer or radiator.
Tumble drying gives lovely soft nappies but damages the elastic if you do it all the time.

I use to love my Bum Genius nappies but now my 7 month old DD takes them off and waves them at me now !!!

I have to put clothing with crotch poppers over them to keep her from undoing them.

It is not a big deal for us, as DD is ECed so is in trainer pants during the day and we only use cloth nappies at night. But if I was going to fully nappy my daughter, I would buy something which used poppers or nippas to fasten not velcro.

I think Wonder Roos look very nice and look worth a try.

Also I recently bought some terry nappy squares, as mop up and general use nappies. And I love how easy they are to fold and use, I don'tunderstand why more people don't use standard terrys. Easy to dry, fold and use and very cheap

powder28 · 01/04/2007 09:20

where di you buy your terrys?

OP posts:
powder28 · 01/04/2007 09:27

The nappies and wraps ive ordered have got poppers cos both my ds's take their nappies off!

I bought some economical 'Joy' terries from here...but if I was to buy any more, I would go for the Little Ewes as I have heard good things about them.
