The pressure to be a subpar parent on Facebook

Has anyone else found it like this? Just saw another one of those posts going round saying "Of course I don't cook healthy home cooked meals every night, real mother's know it's smiley faces and chicken nuggets half the time". I know if I replied opposing the post all hell would rain down on me. I made that mistake once, never again.

And you always see these brags about how they haven't done the housework they were supposed to today, forgot about their kids homework or project, stolen their child's treat, or couldn't wait to chuck their child in bed so they could drink a bottle of wine, ect. I always see people complaining about taking them to events or something they are actually excited about. They all cheer eachother on but then anyone who is trying to be the best parent they can be gets slated.

I think it's appalling and I can't be the only one who thinks that, right?

I totally agree. I mean I don't find it appalling but rather just a total bore.

The amount of time in mum groups I've felt like I need to be self deprecating to fit in.

It's needed though. It's a reset from the old days when everyone pretended they were perfect and weren't honest with each other and often really struggling secretly.

It'll level out I think.

Littlepond · 02/08/2017 19:55

Oh my Facebook is littered with links to these awful real mummy blogs which always feature pictures of large glasses of wine and over the top descriptions of all the dreadful parenting decisions they've made that day. I can't bear them! They are, in my opinion, just as bad as the "crafty mummy", "eco mummy" "trendy mummy" blogs which go the other way and brag about their perfect parenting. I have no interest in either party...

ChasingHighs · 02/08/2017 19:59

Why is it appalling? It's real life.

I damn well hope it's not real life! It's like they are competing to be the worse parent

I think it's mostly meant to be a comical, exaggerated view of some of the less glamorous sides of parenting. Light hearted, tongue in cheek, funny.... lighten up people! 🙄

ChasingHighs · 02/08/2017 20:22

Really? I think you are taking it far too seriously.

Just unfriend them if they disgust you so much,no one likes a smug mummy type.

SkyWalker95 · 02/08/2017 20:23

LittlePond atleast those are are trying their best and spreading something positive. Even if they are somewhat annoying

AlpacasPackOwls · 02/08/2017 20:26

I can't stand any mummy blogs either. The "perfect" mummy ones to the "shit" mummy ones. They are all awful. Urgh.

gunting · 02/08/2017 20:28

No I agree and I can't relate to them. And all of the 'yay it's bed time mummy needs gin' stuff.

I cook from scratch everyday because it's a hell of a lot cheaper than smiley faces and nuggets. I think a lot of these status/meme/smug mummy bloggers are out there writing this crap to get more likes and comments.

Violetparis · 02/08/2017 20:32

I find them irritating rather than appalling, mostly well off women trying to be 'cool'. Really don't like the one I used to see on FB referring to her kids as 'little shits'. If it was someone not so wealthy think the reaction would be very different.

QuiteLikely5 · 02/08/2017 20:35

You cook from scratch everyday? What do you want a medal??

It might be cheaper but only if you are bulking out with lentils etc

It's not cheap to buy fresh meat/fish
Fruit/veg and cook from scratch every day. When feeding a family of 4/5

It's very expensive

Mollyboom · 02/08/2017 20:40

They really fuck me off- oh my God Slummy mummy and like neglected the kids. No you are a bunch of middle class twats who like to be all like we are not totally obsessive about our kids. Of course you are otherwise you wouldn't be trying to justify them eating chicken nuggets in an anxiety ridden blogged hidden under a thin veil of shit unfunny humour. I'll tell you what neglect is shall I, starving kids looking through bins, parents off their faces on smack at 9am, domestic violence. Not feeding Oliver and Amelia some ficking nuggets while you have a glass of fun.

Violetparis · 02/08/2017 20:45

Mollyboom you put what I was trying to get at in my previous post in a much more direct, succinct way. Totally agree with you.

timeisnotaline · 02/08/2017 20:50

This is such a blanket statement. Mums spend just about all day and all night with their children, what the hell else should they be writing about? Is their being a mum too boring for you? Do you dislike all mums or just give zero fucks about their life? Because that's their life. (I'm not a mummy blogger, I just think people can do whatever they want to do within reason, and mummy blogging is very much within reason)

Mollyboom · 02/08/2017 20:51

Thank you violetparis. There was one where she was lamenting how her home made houmous for the Pta was substandard because she was such a radical nonconformist mum. Ffs- who makes home made houmous for a pta fair except the fairly well off. She didn't take too kindly to my suggestion to buy some space raider crisps from the cash and carry, because of course that would have spoiled her blog.

Itsjustaphase84 · 02/08/2017 20:53

Err fb has a block posts feature???

aramintafatbottom · 02/08/2017 20:55

Oh god get over it. Unfriend them. Block them even!

Who honestly has the time in the day to give a shit what other people's kids had for tea.

Concentrate on your own.

RainbowBriteRules · 02/08/2017 20:55

Just don't look at them then! I much prefer them to the ones where everyone is #makingmemories and having #familytime which are just designed to make others feel shit.

Oh shit wrong post entirely!! Blush

Violetparis · 02/08/2017 20:58

Great response to blog Mollyboom. I have them all hidden now on FB as I found them cringey, annoying and vomit inducing in equal measure.

Iggity · 02/08/2017 21:01

But strangely appropriate for this post araminta Grin

Vonklump · 02/08/2017 21:03

It's all exaggerated waffle though really. A one dimensional view of their lives.

However, I'm still trying to imagine a world where you would take hummus of any sort to the PTA, let alone home made hummus.

JohnnyMcGrathSaysFuckOff · 02/08/2017 21:03

Yeah agree, annoying as fuck. Except Hurrah for Gin, she is funny. Most people just trying to jump on the bandwagon though, like that appalling Bad Mother programme.

And no, "mums" do not necessarily spend all night and day with their children. What a weird thing to say. Many of us work, you know. I really look forward to the time I spend with DD after work, and yeah I spend it talking to her, reading to her, teaching her things, and giving her the healthiest food I can get her to eat.

And no, I don't want a medal, ta, before some sarcastic dickhead asks Grin
