Dilemma with 8 month old.

I have a dilemma. My daughter is almost 8 months old and I'm planning to go out for my birthday next weekend. I haven't been out since she was born so I am planning to drink and my mum will be looking after her, my hv letting someone else have her for a night anyway so she has no choice but to take the bottle. Only problem is, she won't take the bottle, I have tried different teats and no joy. Today, I expressed a bit of milk into a bottle and gave it to her, she sucked for 30 seconds then started crying. She won't take formula at all so I do believe that is progress. I think I am going to express for my birthday only problem is I am worried about becoming engorged as my dress reveals a by of cleavage I feel like my boobs will be rock hard. I am going to try express before I leave. How do I store milk from now until then? Also after drinking can I breastfeed when I get home ? Or do I have to pump and dump for a bit, so should I pump more for the next day?

Kellymom website is very useful for these questions.
Have you tried someone else giving her a bottle when you are not in the room?

willymcwill · 06/07/2017 16:15

Firstly, there's no need to pump and dump. If you're sober enough to safely be in charge of your baby then the amount of alcohol in your bloodstream (that would transfer into your milk) will be negligible.

Any milk you express between now and going out can be frozen and then taken out to defrost beforehand. Just be careful that you don't overstimulate your supply by pumping too much, which could make you extra uncomfortable when away from baby.

If you do feel a bit engorged whilst out then you could always hand express in the loos whilst out to make yourself more comfortable.

Starfairylights · 06/07/2017 17:44

HeirHelp I have, she just cries. I've even had my brother have a go. Thanks for that willymcnilly I think I'll just have to hand express while in the loo.

What size teats are they? If they are just the ones that came with the bottle thru are likely too slow for her.

Aquamarine1029 · 06/07/2017 17:55

Have you tried a sippy cup instead of a bottle? Neither of my children ever used a bottle and both were using sippy cups at eight months.

scrivette · 06/07/2017 18:16

Would she drink from a cup instead?

My bottle refuser, as well as a few others I know, were happy to drink from the very cheap Tesco bottles (£1 per bottle with very soft teat) which were recommended to me on here. The teat is softer than other bottles and seems to be easier for breast fed babies.

Starfairylights · 06/07/2017 18:23

She will drink water from a sippy cup but not milk. I've used the tests that came with the bottle & quite a few ones from asda.

Mine acts as if being poisoned if the milk isn't exactly body temperature. Might that help? Although by 8 months my first wouldn't contemplate bottles at all. How long will you be out?

JustMumNowNotMe · 06/07/2017 18:35

They likely are too slow then given her age. She will want fast flow and the ones they come with are slow.

Have you tried a doidy cup?

Starfairylights · 06/07/2017 18:45

I will be out from about 10pm - 5am I would say. Maybe earlier and no I will give a doidy cup a try.

Bloody hell, you're out until 5 am with a baby! That would have taken me weeks to get over!

Starfairylights · 06/07/2017 18:48

No I won't be out with my baby until 5am! I will be going out until then, she normally sleeps from about 12am till about 9am.

When DD2 started refusing bottles, J got doidy cups and she took to them really easily. You can order them from Amazon.

Fair play OP, hats off to you for doing an all nighter! I don't reckon I could do it anymore!

PotteringAlong · 06/07/2017 19:47

She doesn't mean you're taking your baby out until 5am! She means that you're going out until 5am AND you have a baby and it would take her a week to get over being out until 5am

sadmum2017 · 06/07/2017 19:49

I tried about 8 different bottles with my DS. Finally, he accepted a Latch bottle and we've never looked back.

EveryoneTalkAboutPopMusic · 06/07/2017 19:51

I think Imperial meant that you have a baby and you'll be out until 5am not that you'll be taking the baby with you Smile

I went out when DD was a similar age, just until about 11pm. No pumping and dumping required. She was a bottle refuser too. She had a huge feed, before I went out. DH gave her sone weetabix, chopped banana and milk and when she finally realised that I wasn't coming back anytime soon she relented and had some ebm from a cup. She was tearful but survived Smile

Starfairylights · 06/07/2017 20:36

Oh haha. Yeah I mean I haven't been out since she's been born and it's my birthday so I kinda wanna go all out lol. So a Latch bottle is another to try. I'm feeling a bit bad as I don't want her to be upset but I know she needs to take the bottle some time as I want to give up breastfeeding before September. Thanks all for advice

It's a Munchkin Latch. Forgot the Munchkin part! Get them on Amazon.

Starfairylights · 10/07/2017 11:42

My mum had her last night as a test run, she screamed hysterically for about 2 hours. I might not be able to go out after all, any other tips to get her to take the bottle, I think she wants the boob for comfort at night more so then actual milk so I'm struggling on what the to do. She didn't take the latch bottle

I never understand people who havent left their child ever before who think the child will just "get it" in a couple of days.. You've known it's been your birthday for a long time so why are you only just thinking about how to teach your child?

Lj8893 · 10/07/2017 11:57

Could you bf her just before you go out, say 9.45? How often does she usually go between feeds at night?

furryelephant · 10/07/2017 12:22

My DD has hated every bottle or cup I've tried with her until I found a cheap one in TK Max the other day, it's called a Brother Max easy hold sippy cup. She loves it and it seems to be really easy for her to drink from! Could be worth a try Smile

anonymice · 10/07/2017 12:24

Home Bargains have Brother Max at the moment as well. My DD never took a bottle. She went away with her Dad overnight at about 9 months. She had her sippy cup of water in the night, some small bits of banana, a story and went back to sleep, he reported.

Starfairylights · 10/07/2017 12:25

I have been trying for a long time thanks. Since last month, I just haven't left her with my mum until yesterday as she also has had other commitments with work. I could breastfeed her before I go although, she normally dream feeds once through the night. Thank you furryelephant

She finally took a bottle yesterday. I am beyond happy, so proud of her. She will take breastmilk of formula. I am cutting feeds down to twice a day, how many bottles and how many ounces should she have per day. I think she defenitely needs a bottle at night.
