Hi

How do you lovely mums make up bottles for days outing when you have to add powder to boiling water and top rest up

I fretted for so long about this but now I'm in a routine and more relaxed.

I take a sterile bottle and screw the teat/lid on which should remain sterile for a few hours from what I've read. I take a flask of hot water and a bottle of cooled boiled water. I add about 1 oz of hot water to the sterile bottle, add powder, shake up and then add cooled boiled water up to 4 oz mark.

If you plan to feed baby in cafes like I do then you can probably get away with not taking boiled water and just ask for some along with your cup of tea.

I prefer to make fresh as in this hot weather a pre-made bottle won't last long and it's not worth the risk.

I think you have to do what's best for you and what you are most comfortable with.

Take a carton and an empty bottle

dementedpixie · 05/07/2017 14:31

Or you can take hot water in a bottle in an insulated bottle bag and the pre measured powder or you can take a made up bottle that has been chilled in the fridge and then put in the insulated bag

How long does pre made bottles last

OP posts:
TwatteryFlowers · 05/07/2017 14:36

I used to take a pre-made bottle and keep it in a cool bag with a small ice block. I then switched to the cartons (we used them overnight as well).

dementedpixie · 05/07/2017 14:37

From nhs site:

If made-up formula is stored:

in a fridge–use within 24 hours

in a cool bag with an ice pack–use withinfour hours

at room temperature–use withintwo hours

kimball · 05/07/2017 14:39

I do exactly the same as RiceButt

dementedpixie · 05/07/2017 14:42

You should really premeasure the cold water you add as once you add formula the level would go over 4oz. If you only add up to 4oz then there is too little water for the amount of formula

Vics100pink · 05/07/2017 14:45

Ah thank you do you have the nhs link, as I was told bottles made up only have an hour to drink

A 4oz bottle (ie 4 scoops + 4 oz water) makes more than a 4oz feed. Be careful only adding to 4oz as your formula will be too concentrated. Even more so with larger amounts.

dementedpixie · 05/07/2017 14:51

www.nhs.uk/Conditions/pregnancy-and-baby/Pages/infant-formula-questions.aspx#whatdo - it's 1 hour if they have started drinking from it and 2 hours if it's untouched

Vics100pink · 05/07/2017 15:17

Ah OK so question, why do people pre make up and store in the fridge

OP posts:
n0rtherrn · 05/07/2017 15:20

I make a bottle up at home using boiling water, cool it under the cold tap then store in a bottle cooler bag with an ice pack and use within a couple of hours.

I find it easier to warm up a pre made bottle (takes no longer than 5 minutes) rather than making up one from scratch and cooling down.

If the baby is screaming randomly for milk before I would have anticipated and started to prepare a bottle, it's much quicker IME.

CremeDeSudo · 05/07/2017 15:48

I came here to say to do what RiceButt said. It's seems a pain to begin with but quickly became second nature. As the bottles get bigger I'd do roughly 60:40 cold/hot to get the temp right.

Thank you, how do you lovely mums make it up when you are at home

OP posts:
RiceButt · 05/07/2017 15:55

I'm basically copying what the Perfect Prep machine does.

CremeDeSudo · 05/07/2017 15:57

I used to keep a bottle of cooled boiled water on the cupboard, use hot water from the recently boiled kettle, mix the formula and top up with the cooled boiled water.

RiceButt · 05/07/2017 16:04

Perfect perp machine when at home. It's a life saver during those long night hours when baby is crying for a feed.

Vics100pink · 05/07/2017 16:06

Thanks and what do you. Do on nights away

OP posts:
RiceButt · 05/07/2017 16:14

I recently spent 5 nights away and took the Perfect Prep with me but it was self catering so I had access to electricity and water. I'm not sure what I will be doing when it's just a night away in a hotel, maybe take a huge supply of cooled boiled water and rely on hotel for hot water.

RiceButt · 05/07/2017 16:14

I'm also interested to hear what others do when away from home

splendide · 05/07/2017 16:17

Just buy the bottles of ready mixed for out and about. It was all we used.

n0rtherrn · 05/07/2017 16:19

As long as there is a kettle and fridge, carry on as normal with making bottles in advance.

If not, the ready mixed formula doesn't need refrigerating until opened so I use them and throw out any unused within the advised time.

Eeeeek2 · 05/07/2017 16:20

Ready made cartons when in hotel for night time - usally not there many nights and beep would wake husband even though he sleeps through baby crying

Perfect prep if self catering
