Advice on converting over to cloth

sweetas · 20/03/2007 22:12

I am hoping to convert to cloth ASAP

But i need some advice on the type of nappies to invest in (i am open to the idea of several type/brands of nappies)

At first i thought about pocket possibly wonderoos or fuzzi bunz but i think i may have read, in the mountain on stuff there is to boggle me, that they are not as absorbant as shaped nappies is this correct?

My daughter is 2 months old, currently breastfed on demand (roughly every 2-3 hrs) although at night she only wakes once and on occassions twice in the night. She poo's 2-4 times a day and these are rarely explosive

I live in london - so hard water area and i would be drying by line and/or clothes rack

Ideally i like the idea of birth to potty sized nappies but am open to the idea of sized.

My DH and DS have senstive skin and are both prone to eczema (i have to be very careful whay products i use on my DS) so far my DD seems fine but i haven't used anything on her skin except olive oil.

I would probably wash my nappies almost everyday too

I think that is about everything!

TIA

Bamboo stays softer than all the others in hard water

sweetas · 20/03/2007 23:05

has anyone tried/heard anything about the wam bamboo?

OP posts:
Flamesparrow · 20/03/2007 23:08

looooooooooooooooooooove it

Longer rise/tabs than the bamboozles so lasts for longer as btp, and the booster is completely removable so you can position anywhere you need it

Flamesparrow · 20/03/2007 23:11

birth to potty sorry... i wander off into nappyspeak far too easily

sweetas · 20/03/2007 23:15

re:nappy nation will it go stiff in hard water area?

i think i am leaning more to natural fibre nappies - going to try a few suggestions welcome prefably ones that are absorbant, dry reasonably quick and won't got hard and stiff - i need nice soft nappies

would also like a few pocket or aio for ease (DH, grandparents etc)

OP posts:
sweetas · 20/03/2007 23:16

arrr i see are they only BTP if i get the ones that aren't velcro though?

OP posts:
Flamesparrow · 20/03/2007 23:18

Yes - only nippa ones work as btp.

They are bringing out popper ones - I'll ask in the morning if they will be foldable downable to become little iyswim.

Not used nappy nation, so no help there.

AIO/Pockets - I'm loving swaddlebees at the moment - lovely dinky little nappies

sweetas · 20/03/2007 23:20

thanks

swaddlebees are they natural?

OP posts:
Flamesparrow · 20/03/2007 23:29

They have an organic cotton layer next to the skin, so it should be ok (that is the aios), the pockets have the same thing and you can stuff them with hemp so they are natural all the way through.

sweetas · 20/03/2007 23:31

me air flow or rikki?

OP posts:
Flamesparrow · 20/03/2007 23:33

I prefer airflow - mainly because DS reacts if any velcro touches him (and I do them up wrong so it always does )

sweetas · 20/03/2007 23:42

so you don't have to get rikki if you have velco/aplix nappies?

great so far on my list i have

wam bamboo
swaddlebees AIO or pocket
ME wraps
possibly nappy nation

I have a Nappy nation no fold bamboo. Its fine. But i wouldnt say any more than that. It does dry quickly-which is a bonus when using bamboo nappies, but does tend to go a bit crunchier than my other bamboo nappies. I also find it bunches slightly between the legs so if my dd poos when she has been wearing it a while the poo escapes the nappy and ends up all over the wrap. I use it (along with my diddy and microdiddy diapers) as a backup nappy, to be used only when no others are clean. The nappy nation wrap i had wicked around the legs so I'd recommend using it with a ME or Nature Babies wrap.
If you get a BTP nappy I would agree with Flame that WBB is the one to go for. Its sooo much slimmer and less bulky around the waist than others and fits well through a range of sizes (the nippa version anyway). Many other BTP's are huge on smaller babies -I have a mommys touch pocket and a wonderoo (i think) and both are still massive on my 10 mo (she's approx 19lbs)
Pocket nappies are not less absorbant than shaped as someone else says it depends what you stuff them with but i have found them less reliable-far more prone to wicking around legs and waist and more poos able to escape. Also overstuffing can lead to them gaping and wee running straight out.
My favourite nappies are WBB and Bambeasy-both of which can be used as a BTP although the WBB will be slimmer on a smaller baby. Also the Bambeasy has a fleece inner which i love but which may not be suitable for your baby with sensitive skin. I also like my ellas house for slimness but it does dry quite crunchy.

Flamesparrow · 21/03/2007 11:09

I think the problem with pockets is that although you can stuff lots for absorbancy, too much pulls at the edges, which is then what leads to the wicking.

ChristinePlushPants · 22/03/2007 10:40

Have you thought about doing a nappy trial? You can borrow some nappies to use on your dd and see which ones you prefer.

Bamboo is anti bacterial and super on sensitive skin, but can take a while to dry. Nice and slim though. I like the Bamboozles. The size 2 popper can be used as a birth to potty nappy.

Tots Bots rainbow bots (coloured) are also nice, the size 2 nippa can be folded down and used from birth. These nappies are being de-listed by Tots Bots so will not be available much longer.

ME Sandy's are lovely, good on explosive poo, very absorbent. The organic ones stay softer than the normal ones. SAme thing with the ME One Size, organic is softer.

Popolini also do an organic two size nappy and an Organic One Size, the two size is similar to the Sandy's in style. Their organic products are cheaper than ME and have less air miles as made in Europe not Canada.

Easy Peasy Bumbles are a good value nappy, they are fleece lined and have a pocket which you can use for boosting later on. They are a birth to potty nappy and seem to come up well in tests.

Fluffles are good for being quick drying but are not as asborbent as the rest of the TB range in my experience. It seems to depend on the child though, as I have customers who find them very absorbent and love them to bits. They are completely synthetic and may not be so good for those with sensitive skin.

Nature Babies Micro Diddy Diapers are also worth considering, microfibre on the outside but lined with white cotton jersey, so you have natural fibre next to babys skin.

Terry squares are fab, used them on my last 2 until they got too wriggly to fasten them up properly!

For wraps I'd suggest going with polyester or fleece (perhaps fleece for night, polyester for day) as they are effective and fast drying. Popolini, Mother-ease, Nature Babies and Tots Bots are all good. Nature Babies have some fantastic colours. Tots Bots are better since they added the leg gussets. Personally I always got on better with popper wraps. If your nappy is velcro fastening I'd avoid a velcro wrap, as too much velcro across the tummy can make for a very stiff midriff when baby gets old enough to want to sit up.

I hope that helps, feel free to contact me if you want any more advice as I don't get on here as often as I'd like to these days.

MrsWaggsnapps · 22/03/2007 13:47

If you are open to folding squares, I'd really recommend the bamboo ones (Nappy Nation and Babeco do lovely ones), they are alpt less bulky than trad. terries and dry faster than bamboo shaped. They also make an excellent filler for a pocket nappy.

Christine's list is a good one, the Bumbles are a very good starting point, esp. at night as they dry quickly and can be stuffed with boosters. Thye are birth to potty and abit longer than Tots Bots.

clairemow · 22/03/2007 13:53

sweetas, where are you? Here in Bristol we have an incentive scheme like you were asking about lower down. You get £30 off your purchase but have to buy over £50 I think (pretty easy!) in one shop. Only certain shops take the coupons.

The Nappy Project also do a system of borrowing a big bucket full of different sorts of nappies to try out. I got one and it was obvious which ones worked for DS and which didn't. He totally hated the wraps (screamed and screamed) so we ended up with all in one Kushies, but I also liked the Motherease all in ones, but the Kushies were cheaper . I really like them and he's comfy.
