Advice on converting over to cloth

sweetas · 20/03/2007 22:12

I am hoping to convert to cloth ASAP

But i need some advice on the type of nappies to invest in (i am open to the idea of several type/brands of nappies)

At first i thought about pocket possibly wonderoos or fuzzi bunz but i think i may have read, in the mountain on stuff there is to boggle me, that they are not as absorbant as shaped nappies is this correct?

My daughter is 2 months old, currently breastfed on demand (roughly every 2-3 hrs) although at night she only wakes once and on occassions twice in the night. She poo's 2-4 times a day and these are rarely explosive

I live in london - so hard water area and i would be drying by line and/or clothes rack

Ideally i like the idea of birth to potty sized nappies but am open to the idea of sized.

My DH and DS have senstive skin and are both prone to eczema (i have to be very careful whay products i use on my DS) so far my DD seems fine but i haven't used anything on her skin except olive oil.

I would probably wash my nappies almost everyday too

I think that is about everything!

TIA

Yup, on not as absorbant as shaped.

Drying by line/clothes rack makes it less likely that bamboo would suit you - but it depends really on how many nappies you would want to buy... if you buy enough to allow for 24 hrs or so drying time, then its not an issue, but if you don't want nappies hanging around drying for 24 hrs or so, or you don't want to buy so many then probably best avoided.

You sound like you would be best of trying a few different types to work out what you would like.

look here for starter kits that could help?

laughingduck · 20/03/2007 22:21

Shaped 2 part systems are just about the most reliable you can buy. I use these and also some pockets but I find that the pockets need changing religiously whereas the two part have a little more tolerance. My favourite are tots bots with a motherease wrap. If you want quick drying I suggest you look at Fluffles by tots bots as these are made of microfibre and dry quickly and stay soft. You can also use the size two nappies from birth to potty which will save you some money. For wraps I would always choose Motherease as they seem to be the most reliable. I'm sure some of the other cloth addicts will be along to give advice on their faves too but HTH in the meantime .

Flame, I knew you would beat me to it .

I've only ever used Bambino Mios (with two kids) which comprise a pair of plastic outer knickers with velcro and then a rectangular absorbent cloth which is folded and goes in the knickers.

I found them to be great.

SenoraPostrophe · 20/03/2007 22:24

why don't you get a few different ones to test?

but my vote goes to a mix of tots bots bamboo and normal (or fluffles). the bamboo ones are more absorbent, but take longer to dry.

I've also had more luck with tots bots wraps than with motherease.

Flamesparrow · 20/03/2007 22:24

lol - sorry about putting the link shameless advertising there and I'm annoyed with myself now!!!

Fluffles are great for quick drying, but they can be bulky.

Oooh - quick flips open up lots to dry, so could be an alternative

sweetas · 20/03/2007 22:27

Thanks girls

i was looking at tot bots too - what are bamboozles like?

regarding wraps are ME wraps ok for nighttime use or are fleece wraps better?

Also my local council has a incentive scheme - has anyone had experience with these? Can you buy your nappies from different places and just include all the different reciepts when claiming back the cash?

I've got some terries you can have for postage if you want. Terries are a good workhorse nappy . If you have those and about 4 wraps then you can build up a collection of shaped sized/birth-potty/whatever at your leisure. Let me know if you want them.

juuule · 20/03/2007 22:29

I use ME wraps for night-time without problems.

laughingduck · 20/03/2007 22:30

Bumgenius are a great BTP pocket actually, and they dry quickly too. Can be quite slim fitting depending on what they are stuffed with.

Ruthyn · 20/03/2007 22:31

I think you should try tots bots fluffles, like the lady said before, they are super absorbant, stay soft and dry really quickly. They also have a pocket for extra boosting at night, a bit bulky then but it doesn't matter at night.
Motherease one size and bumbles are also good but take longer to dry, avoid the bamboozle as that takes ages to dry!
I vote for motherease wraps too - very rarely leak

forgot to add my daughter is average build 10lb 3oz at 2month old weighin if this makes any difference

Flamesparrow · 20/03/2007 22:32

Either - my DS reacts to the bindings of non fleece/wool overnight, but that is definately more an exception than rule.

I prefer the shaping of the bambineos to bamboozles, but again that is personal preference - I find them a better fit as a birth to potty job.

Councils - every council has a different scheme so it is best to check exactly what yours offers

junkinmytrunk · 20/03/2007 22:37

I've used motherease onesize with my dd2 since birth with a airflow wrap, great staple nappy and relatively easy to dry, but it is a question of trial and error at first

sweetas · 20/03/2007 22:38

flame don't worry for the shameless link! I already had your webpage as a favourite anyway ;)

Ju - when you say terries do you mean the terry squares? i have no idea how to fold etc but am willing to learn!

so fluffles seems like a good option any idea on where i can get these from for a good price?

OP posts:
Flamesparrow · 20/03/2007 22:39

You star

Flamesparrow · 20/03/2007 22:40

I'm not sure about individual fluffles at low costs, but I know a lot of places do a discount (its 5 or 10%... can't remember - still trying to get the site to accept it without reducing EVERYTHING in the order by that much ) when you buy 10 or more.

Flamesparrow · 20/03/2007 22:41

5% off

sweetas · 20/03/2007 22:42

flame - haven't heard of quick flips?

I am reading that fluffles are "Very absorbent yet lightweight, quick drying, not too bulky with a clever, reliable well-tested design and antibacterial properties."
would you agree with this?

OP posts:
juuule · 20/03/2007 22:42

Yes, I mean terry squares. The 60cm ones. You would soon pick up the folding

Flamesparrow · 20/03/2007 22:45

Antibacterial

I find them to be quite bulky, but then I am used to bamboo which is really slim. They are definately very absorbant and a good design.

Oooh one thought though some (and I do only mean some) children don't do well with the microfibre, its too drying even with the fleecey inside - it oculd be an issue if she does turn out to have sensitive skin.

quick flip - they are a special patented design - open out completely flat and then all fold in on themselves to make a shaped nappy.

I want one soooo much

sweetas · 20/03/2007 22:45

are ME sandys any good?

OP posts:
LadyOfTheFlowers · 20/03/2007 22:46

i have some sandys. i like them! easy for dh! lol

sweetas · 20/03/2007 23:00

quick flip look good - has anyone tried them?

as for fluffles and other non-natural nappies - i was wondering if manmade materials might not be such a good idea for her skin. but is it a case that the natural materials such as hemp, bamboo and cotton take longer to dry? and can go stiff in a hard water area?

is any one of these natural nappies better than the others

OP posts:
spacegrantham · 20/03/2007 23:01

I agree you should try different brands and types and see what suits you. Not sure about the fluffle you already have family memebers that have sensitive skin. As far as I know it is a manmade fibre and you would be much better with natural fibres like cotton or bamboo. Quick flip and nappy nation are quick drying nappies if you think you are going to have drying problems. Sandies are not very absorbant and dry slower than anything else I have had. Not true that stuffables are less absorbant than shaped , because you can stuff them with anything you decide the absorbancy hemp being a favourite and you could stuff with bamboo prefolds that dry quite quickly. nappy nation do these too. Get a couple of size one and some size 2's , size 2 nappies that close with a nippa can usually be folded down to make a birth to potty type nappy eg the tots bots size 2 , easy peasy bumble and nappy nation bamboo size 2. Happy shopping
