Ikea Antilop High Chair

DS is just over five months old now and is EBF. I'm intending to go down the baby-led weaning route when he gets to six months. I'm looking for a high chair and after doing some research it would appear that all roads lead to the Ikea Antilop! Is it as good as everyone says and will I need the cushion as we won't be starting until he can sit up unaided anyway. Thanks Smile

Best high chair ever!

No don't worry about the cushion.

So easy to clean!

MyNameIsInigoMontoya · 08/06/2017 09:07

It really is! Takes up much less space than some of the others, easy to plop them in and out of and sooo easy to clean.

We had a more traditional one when ours were small, and switched over totally to the Antilop after we got that. It was lovely not having all the strap-wrangling or trying to clean all the silly wrinkles in the cushions!

Definitely the best highchair. We got th cushion and used it for ages, although DS could sit up well it moves them closer to the tray so they lose less food down the gap!

Get it. Best highchair ever.

Floweroct2 · 08/06/2017 09:12

Yes it's great, we also used the cushion just to get him in a bit closer to the tray and to keep him still!

honeysucklejasmine · 08/06/2017 09:16

Yep. We still use the cushion with our 16 month old. It stops her trying to climb out.

furryelephant · 08/06/2017 09:16

My DD has been in it since before she could quite sit up independently to get her used to it because she wouldn't be put down in anything else and it's fab, we got the cushion to make it a bit more comfy while she's small

Phalarope · 08/06/2017 09:21

Get it. Also, if you have a dining table and there's 72cm of space between floor and the underneath of the table, you can slide it in and use the tabletop instead of the tray (I may have done some measuring when we bought our table so we could all sit round together)

We bought ours after having lunch in Ikea and realising that DS looked so much happier and more comfortable in the Antilop than the one we used at home. I remember plonking him in and, after 15 or 20 minutes, thinking 'Wouldn't it be great if you could actually buy one of these ....?!' It takes me a while to catch on sometimes. We bought a second one later on to keep at my mum's. Great high chair. Used again for DS2.

TwoDogs9 · 08/06/2017 09:53

Thanks everyone. I was only doubting it because I showed my Mum and she criticised it! But she is horrified at the idea of BLW too and can't understand why I'm not stuffing him with Farleys Rusks already 🙄

We used the cushion (and a towel behind the cushion). DS could sit up, but it helped get him closer to the tray, so less was lost in the gap of doom. You can use any cushion really though if you think you need it.

ButtMuncher · 08/06/2017 10:10

Definitely the best high chair. Easy to clean and not bulky. We've got two cushions but don't use them anymore as DS is a bit of a chunk.

JigglyTuff · 08/06/2017 10:13

It's fantastic! It goes in the dishwasher and everything.

Jackiebrambles · 08/06/2017 10:15

Definitely get it. I have no idea why anyone bothers buying a different type of high chair, especially those ones with integrated padded cushions. We've used them on holidays and stuff and they are SO hard to clean!

BarbieBrightSide · 08/06/2017 10:29

It is the best thing I had while mine were small.

Also because the legs come off it is easier to take to other places than the massive cushioned ones (wish I'd had one for dc1 instead of the massive, padded one!)

UnaOfStormhold · 08/06/2017 10:44

We used it and it was very good. My only reservation was that when he got to being a bit more independent we ended up buying Aldi's Tripp Trapp clone (about £40) as a toddler seat which would probably have done very well when he was little, been just as easy to clean and lasted longer. But at the price (and the convenience of being able to take it apart to travel with it) the Antilop is hard to argue with! While in Ikea their wipeclean longsleeve bibs are great for BLW, and if you can pick up a metre or so of cheapish PVC tablecloth fabric that is very handy to protect the floor under the seat.

ThatsNotEvenAWord · 08/06/2017 10:49

The cushion is really handy to take out and about, I have a spare that I keep in my car boot. As well as restaurant high chairs which are often massive, you can use them in swings and stuff like that.

NotAPuffin · 08/06/2017 11:12

We had two (small age gap!) and adored them. They're the perfect high chair and brilliant value.

Firenight · 08/06/2017 11:15

Yes they are brilliant. And they go in the dishwasher.

SleepyHeadThisTime · 08/06/2017 11:46

Do it - it's a great high chair! I would get the cushion as at 6 months they'll be quite a gap between them and the tray otherwise.

JoWithABow · 08/06/2017 11:51

How big is your baby? If they are a big baby the might not need cushion but if they are smaller it's helpful to fill the gap. Even though you won't be starting until your baby can sit up even babies that have been sitting up for a while wobble or suddenly fall back occasionally so if there is plenty of room in the highchair they can fall back and whack the back of their head. You can always use a rolled up blanket at the back though and see how you get on.

And another vote for the antelope here too, so easy to clean, comfy, lasts ages, why spend ££££ when you don't have to!

KatherinaMinola · 08/06/2017 11:53

It's excellent. We never bothered with the cushion (more to clean) but you do need to buy the tray (they're purchased separately).

Most cafes have them, so you can always try before you buy.

ALemonyPea · 08/06/2017 11:54

I had fancy cushioned adjustable high chairs with my first two DC. Third child got an Antilop and I wish I'd saved my money the first two times round and just bought that. It's the best high chair I've used, so easy to clean.

Bear2014 · 08/06/2017 11:55

It's amazing. IMO the best value baby product on the market, hands down. Our DD was on the 91st percentile with chunky thighs so never had the cushion.

VimFuego101 · 08/06/2017 12:08

Another vote for the Antilop!
