i use an ellaroo wrap at the moment, but ds is only 9 weeks old. not sure i'd want to be carrying a toddler in it, but i'm sure you could if you were strong enough!

I hate the ergo -really wanted to love it I have heard that it tends not to suit smaller people - am not casting ANY aspersions, Loopymumsy!
I use a ring sling with dd atm, but she is a titchy 1 yo!

I made my own mei tai DS (18months) and I love it DD (5yrs) wants to climb in it sometimes to bless her she can't understand why I will cary the little one and not her!!!!

sparkymummy · 13/03/2007 20:24

funnypeculiar do you mean small in height or small frame? I am looking at getting one as carrying DS round the house in a backpack is uncomfortable and bulky, and I can't work out back carries with my wrap! I am small in height but still have a bit of extra baby weight

funnypeculiar · 13/03/2007 20:25

Frame, as I understand it (from mate who is more in the know) - can't imagine that height would make a difference...

Am not a size 0, btw!

At what age does the ergo become easier for them to get into ? DS is now 11mths and I found it even worse than before to try to get him in it the other day and eventually gave up.

nappyaddict · 15/03/2007 14:24

i'm not sure. i am still using it on the front with 9 month old ds. i'm sure someone on TBW will be able to tell you if no one on here can.

I just carry ds who's 17 months sort of tucked on the hip & held with an arm! (he's 12 kilos)

can I highjack briefly - want to find someone who has used the newborn insert with an Ergo. IF so, is it any good - DS2 is 8 weeks and 14lbs and likes to be carried in cradle position - have wrap and a pouch but want something that is quicker to put on that wrap but can wear for long periods of time - pouch hurts shoulder in that respect.

Was thinking that ergo with insert might be the way forward

ergo! ergo! ergo! ds is 2.4 and reaaallly heavy, and I use it all the time. Can no longer carry him for hours at a time like I used to, but eg for airport trips (we fly a lot) I use it instead of a buggy and can use it on and off all day with no probs. For more prolonged walking he sits on my back, all the weight is on my hips so it's easy peasy.

katierocket · 15/03/2007 15:47

nappyaddict - manchester (and sorry for hijacking your thread!)
and loopy -= it's amazing isn't it - the amoutn of comments I get (all positive) when carrying DS2 in sling - you'd think it was the most amazing thing in the world!

Tamz77 · 15/03/2007 22:24

I had a black Ergo from Free Range Kids (they delivered next day with a personalised note too, v good service; think they were new company at the time so hope they are still around). I ADORED it and must have used it for about 2 yrs, in fact I kept it out of attachment and the great, buggy-free memories.

Was easy to put on/ds in, took seconds, no help or faffing required.

Only troubles were these: obviously baby is behind you so if his hat falls off or he needs his nose wiped or anything, you can't really reach.

And, though I have seen people carrying older kids in Ergos my ds, once he got to about 2.5 yrs, was just too heavy, the main strap cut into my belly and almost sliced me in half. However my ds is very heavy set so others might get as much as another year out of it. I ended up needing a buggy for about a year after all (progressed to scooter now!)

People talk to kids a lot more when they are at eye level, ds used to get a heck of a lot of attention when out and about and I think that's really healthy, the buggy-bound are often ignored. Also he could see whatever I was looking at/doing.

Oh another slight problem; difficult to wear a shoulder bag with an Ergo; I prefer wearing bags with long straps, sitting on my hip - virtually impossible. Handbag or even small rucksack worn frontwise is an alternative.

My this is long. But big up the Ergo!

(Tried one of those fancy shawl looking things that you know baby into, about 40 quid or something crazy...needed constant adjustment and was v encumbering.)

Tamz77 · 15/03/2007 22:25
