Hello my ds is 17 weeks and realising we have a long slog of naps ahead of us i really want to give reusables a go. They seem expensive to get going so i want to try first really through the day to see how easy they are to get away with and how we get on. I have some m care vouchers so thought would check there goods out but looking at kushies and bambino mio and i am confused about what exactly i need and what it entails. Want it to be an easy straight fwd experience so my Dh doesnt poo poo the idea (pardon the pun!). Advise on sizes and all aspects would be apreciated and i can didtch the mcare voucehers if theres somewhere cheaper to shop for em ebay recommendations etc.... Thankyou

i havent commited an order but comfybumfy do them and also happyheinystore.com. Going to get a couple of Happyheiny and a couple of fuzzi bunz or whatever there called but wanted to order inserts with the order. My friend says the fuzzi inserts only last a couple of wees. ZZzzzZZZzz. I used to be an exciting person!

Mish - Fuzzis are easy to use so good in that sense, but not as absorbant as separate nappies. Not necc the best choice for all the time as you may end of having to change them all the time, or having them leaking. That said, some people love them so there you go!!

Happy Heinies are just another pocket - again not so absorbant (unless you go for the hemp pocket which needs a wrap so you're not getting the one-part system you get with a wrapped pocket).

It's very difficult to get fast drying AND slim. Fast drying - microterry - Fluffle IMO. But they're bulky. They are comfy and absorbant. Otherwise slim - absorbant and comfy but slow drying - Bambineo...

Boring I know but I really like this combo... some of each...

As I mentioned, I'm - what - 20 minutes from you. No prob if you want to see a few new brands.

Flame - tricky one - you wanting to go to size 2 so as not to waste them presumably, but babe not quite ready for size 2? NOt quite sure what's happening with the nippas WBB (folded down). This still too big?

Songbird - aplix (or velcro) doesn't last as long as the actual nappy, plus cotton nappies can be hot washed if they're nippa ones (aplix will be damaged if washed over 60/70 degrees).

Aplix can stick to other things in the wash (like my fleece wipes/liners) although some aplix/velcro nappies and a few wraps will fold back at the waist aplix onto itself to stop itself from getting mixed up with the other washing.

It can also need - um - how you say - "flicking". Yum.

On the positive side it's veeeeery fast and easy to use and most daddies like it. I'm a fan, esp with a fast moving toddler.

Nippas are immensely easy to use esp with a bit of practise, however you always need one of the darned things around and IME it's a bit of a murphy's law thing. If there's a nappy around there, won't be a nippa.

If you like the cotton tots then hurry up and buy some more as they're being discontinued! We dropped them some time ago as they're pretty slow sellers, not as soft as MEOS when line dried and not as well fitting as Bambineo. BUt fast drying, fairly slim, and very good value.

Mine was more because you were saying to Mish she would be better off with size 2 rather than btp, but she wasn't wanting nippa iyswim, and her little one was too small still. I was intrigued I'm still getting to grips with advising for velcro where I am so useless with it

That's one of the reasons I love nippa - he's been in the size 2 from about 4 months (still very folded down/crossed over... poor little guy just doesn't grow!!).

makesachange · 08/03/2007 21:54

Ooooooh! I see!!!

OK:

  1. you can nippa a velcro nappy when it's folded down - no problem. Even if you don't want nippas all the time, it's worth it for a few weeks.

  2. Fluffles (and others) popper down and you can use a size 2 as a large young baby's nappy without nippas, just using the poppers. Like a MEOS but sized a bit bigger.

I think I just said size 2 as B2P rather than saying "use a nippa" with all the options that entails

I do like MEOS incidentally - a very good option - I just have other preferences!!!!!!

I don't think, though, that I was very clear. Comes from working full time and trying to NA when I'm knackered in t'evenings!

lol, my problem is trying to set up the shop, sort out munchkins and reply to advice emails all at once... I end up wandering into the nappy world and forget that other people don't speak the language, or I start something, have to change a nappy/wipe a bum/stop Emrys eating pennies/stones/Bronwyn, then come back and have no idea what I was originally saying or doing.

accessorizewithbabysick · 08/03/2007 22:06

Are wbb/bambineo size 2's really truly going to last until potty training (3+)? They don't seem that roomy on my 3 month old. I've just sold dp on them based on not having to buy anymore nappies, just wraps, and anyway there aren't size 3 wbb's anyway are there?

I'm using combo of fluffles & wbb/bambineo's (recommended by emma) and it's absolutely great as I don't have a dryer.

Flamesparrow · 08/03/2007 22:07

yes!

When I got my first one I was a tester, so I tried it on my (then) 3yr old who has a HUGE bum, and it fitted her

makesachange · 08/03/2007 22:10

@ Flame

Yes, brilliant isn't it!

I was walking my dog at lunch today while having a discussion with an employee who wants to leave (my other company, not Makes a Change) when nappies customer phoned for advice. Then got back to the office and packed up some nappies, a lovely wooden jigsaw puzzle and some baby clothes, to send with 53 horsebox windows, 34 horsebox doors and several lockers.

I used to do this while breastfeeding P (and using cloth nappies in the office )What am I complaining about? Incidentally by BF in the office has directly encouraged two of our lads to persuade their partners to try it (successfully) which I'm mucho proud of. Shame they've not got into the nappies, too - but they have bought a few of our organic baby clothes though!!

Tomorrow's my day "off", ie Makes a Change all day and I'm at home with the little guy. It's fabulous and I love it but I am ABSOLUTELY knackered at the end of it. The office is a break!!!

makesachange · 08/03/2007 22:11

Accessorize - to quote Flame - "YES"

accessorizewithbabysick · 08/03/2007 22:14

Alrighty, then I have a 3 year old, it just hadn't occurred to me to put one on him as well, might ask him tomorrow (tho he's got quite a small bum...).

On maternity leave at present, makesachange, and I'm looking forward to going back to the office for a rest in 3 months, know what you mean (although there aren't any horse boxes, boringly).

makesachange · 08/03/2007 22:16

Jeeeeez what kind of an office is THAT???

BUt, you must have a pack of hounds and at least one breastfeeding baby, surely?

Flamesparrow · 08/03/2007 22:18

Horseboxes??!?!?! What else is it you do?!?!

I have stopped the breastfeeding now which has helped slightly (although I am a bit to suddenly realise I have properly stopped)... he was having a bedtime feed and an early morning feed, then I switched to cows milk for bedtime because he wouldn't focus on the feed what with so much more interesting stuff to do, and then he started biting and pinching in the morning and it was too much

I had the paper on the phone today as I was attempting to do up a nappy - got that done then DD started asking for a wee and needed the stairgate opening, and then DS picked up the other phone and started calling my friend! The poor reporter was very tolerant

Flamesparrow · 08/03/2007 22:19

Doesn't every office come with hounds and baby?

I remember working with a woman who used to talk about going to home to let the hounds out for a run

makesachange · 08/03/2007 22:27

ROFL Flame - told you, going back to the office is E.A.S.Y. in comparison.

I do this , too.

I used to go home to let my doggie out - now he just comes with me.. and two others... If I could have ponies in the office, I would

Sooo with you on the BF. I was terribly sad when P self weaned at 15 months. Still miss it

Flamesparrow · 08/03/2007 22:30

Okaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay - nice link there from nappies/organic clothing to doors n windows

It never occurred to me to wonder where one would get horseboxes etc... what with never having had the need to transport a horse

I am starting to this whole office thing!

makesachange · 08/03/2007 22:34

Heh

Well we don't make horseboxes, just the windows and doors. Factory is eco friendly (of course), everything recycled, low energy etc. (Esp after a hard night out haha).

But we (my family and I who run VWC) decided we wanted to start a new eco business, as we're all reallly green, and to promote fair trade, which we're passionate about, so a year or so ago that's what we did. Makes sense - plenty of warehousing, office facilities, shipping facilities, yadda yadda and also my DH runs an IT company so he looks after the old website stuff (other than the actual design and product listings which I do).

PS sorry, appear to be going off thread.

Flamesparrow · 08/03/2007 22:37

It really nice that its all of you doing it

makesachange · 08/03/2007 22:44

Too right, 3 generations in the office when P is there "helping"

Flamesparrow · 08/03/2007 22:45

We'd kill each other if it was my family doing it - we can play nicely together, but I think work would go horribly wrong!!!!

makesachange · 09/03/2007 09:41

taken here!!

makesachange · 09/03/2007 13:47

Mish, sorry about that

It may be too far for you to go, but, next Saturday there's a real nappy thing going on in Beverley, click here to see info

We'll be exhibiting and there's LOADs going on. Worth a trip down if you can make it. The best opportunity for you to really see everything before you make a final decision.
