My ds is 3.3 and still in nappies and I have "just taken them off" and he wees and poos in his pants quite happily. He wont go near a potty or toilet and cries hysterically if you try to make him. IMO he is simply not ready.

I personally would have trained him last summer precisely so he could go in the yard. But you could console yourself with the fact that he will probably grasp it quite quickly. Or get whoever looks after him while you are at work to do it.

MamaG · 06/03/2007 13:38

ahh i see

can't do it yet anyway, have no pants

Well go on then Cod, tell me what I am doing wrong - I have tried really, really tried and he won't. How do you force a child to use the potty/toilet and yes dh and I have both resorted to showing him how.

Aefondkiss · 06/03/2007 13:39

my ds will be 3 in May and he can't say much and def never tells me he has wet/pooed, I just want him to speak, but will be attempting pt in the warmer months, but not expecting great success

DumbledoresGirl · 06/03/2007 13:39

Look, I have to agree with cod here. I have had 4 children and none of them have ever shown themselves ready to be potty trained. You just have to take the bull by the horns. Either that or carry on with nappies if it really doesn't bother you (but I suspect it does or you would not have started the thread).

KTeePee · 06/03/2007 13:39

Mine was 3 recently too and showing no interest.... I am waiting for fine weather and building work to finish here - and should then have a downstairs loo which will make it a lot easier.

I had tried training ds1 loads of time before he was 3 but he didn't get the hang of it till well after so I am not in any great rush (dd was done by 2 too)

MamaG · 06/03/2007 13:40

Yes DG, it does bother me a bit now, it didnt before but today it struck me that he'll be 3

My DS was 3 just before Christmas, and we're now about 4 weeks into potty training - has all gone swimmingly, even though he wasn't showing any particular signs of being ready, and was very unwilling to put on pants when the time came. Give it a go, see what happens - it was really easy for us (star chart, choc buttons etc at the ready). Talk it up for a few days, then go for it at the weekend...

DrMarthaMcMoo · 06/03/2007 13:41

Both of mine were still in nappies at 3. Ds1 cracked it in about a week so was definitely 'ready'; ds2 took a bit longer. Blimey, does it really matter? Have you ever been asked in a job interview "and when were you potty trained?" Leave it til the weather's better then he can potter in the garden and you can dry all the washing outside...

I don't want to make you feel bad - my dd was not trained until she was 3, but then she idd have chronic constipation for 2 years which inhibited ahy hope of PT. My eldest was only started on PT when I realised he was going to be 3 next month. There does seem to be something about them turning 3 that makes us want to get it over and done with, doesn't there?
