Please help! Dry bottom with cloth?!?

LadyOfTheFlowers · 27/02/2007 17:56

Both Ds' are in cloth. Ds2 gets occaisional run of the mill nappy rash which i can handle (usually when i don't have a fleece liner handy!), but ds1 gets dry bum cheeks, on the 'seat' area and also around the inside and towards the front of his thighs where the wrap touches. the skin is pink and shiny and dry, almost like it had been painted with clear nail varnish.
I use a mix of nappies- tots, popolini, little lamb, traditional terries and also wraps- cot.bots, tots, bumpy, bear behinds, minki so i would think the same bits of skin are not always in contact?
anyone, any ideas?

i am looking for some wool wraps for night also if anyone is selling any? i dont have a ton 'o money hence dont care if they are tatty so long as they still do the job.

tia ladies.

Yes there is a cheapo Stacinator on the link as it is a bit knackered.
If he is in the Nemo wrap I am pretty sure this one will be fine. Measure the Nemo wrap in the morning and let me know what you think.

LadyOfTheFlowers · 04/03/2007 22:07

Ouch! That looks how DS goes when he has been in an airflow at night. They never seem to upset him though iyswim.

Very @ the wrap. Babybufters is making me a spiderman nappy

(well, not me one... DS...)

LadyOfTheFlowers · 05/03/2007 14:32

he walks with his legs wide apart if i put a nappy on him.

snugglebumnappies · 05/03/2007 14:38

ohh that looks soooo sore, am thinking that he may be reacting to the elastic in the wrap, it doesn't have to touch the skin to do it, can still cause the irritation through the binding and that the rash he gets on his buttocks my be unrelated to this one on his leg. I would try and get hold of some wool wraps and use them all the time for a few weeks to see how he goes on. In the meantime are you using anything on the rash? I would try bathing him using camomile teabags in the water and bathe the area with chamomilla disolved in a little water.

lunavix · 05/03/2007 14:46

LOTF!!!!! That's exactly what dd got when I put her in cloth (she's now 6 months) I had to change nappies (from tots and kissies to wambamboos and swaddlebees velour) and use wool too (I was using Airflows and Nature Babies PUL)

i LOVE the Nemo wrap - where did you get it from?????????????????

Oh and I can't believe it you're my age and live near(ish!) me, that's a rarity lol

makesachange · 05/03/2007 14:55

Lady - sorry if I've missed something (feeling rotten and not had time to read all posts). Have you tried Moltex, just for a while? If you want a couple of samples (free) let me know by email in case I miss post.

They're good for skin problems.

Also what size is DC again? I have a bamboo wrap looking for someone to trial, may be better than cotton.

Hello
LOF - I have emailed you...I hope
The Nemo wrap is gorgeous isn't it? It was mine. It is a Lovebums wrap from here

LadyOfTheFlowers · 06/03/2007 10:21

lunavix- where are you then dear?

makesachange- what's moltex?! lol

snugglebum- will try the camomile and yes, i am looking to use wool a lot to see of that helps. only thing i am concerned about is wicking.
i think it is to do with the edges. the nemo wrap is fine as it has fleece cuffs. bearbehinds wrap is fine too as it is covered in a ponyskin like material - it is mock cowprint ifkwim? i thought it may be the pressure of the thin cuffs on his cottom bottoms wraps etc, didnt think it could be the elastic.

god....last night i handmade a pair of fleece longies! lol will see how they go!

i have put him today in meos without a wrapas they are so slim they are well clear of the burn, but i only have three so will be washing and tumbling them a lot till i get some wool thru.
i have a pair being made as we speak andonce i get another jumper, can knock another one up in under an hour.
bloss is sending me some. x
i am in process of buying some from skyler.
i haVE plenty coming, its all in the blinking post etc though!!

OP posts:
LadyOfTheFlowers · 06/03/2007 10:24

the problem seems to appear at night when i have to pad him up so much as he is a heavy wetter- he still has a bottle in the night which doesnt help i know, but while he is still under the hosp for his wee infection i have been advised to let him drink whatever he wants, whenever he wants.
the wrap, full of terries and god knows what else, obviously bulges down and when it gets damp it stays against his leg and makes these burns. they are on both legs, the photo shows the worst one.

OP posts:
snugglebumnappies · 06/03/2007 10:31

LOTF what was has infection? Does he still have it? If it was a staph or strep infection could be that he has now got it on his skin, if the skin was broken, maybe by him being sensitive to the wraps/nappies and then being open to the urine in his nappy, has he had a swab taken from the area? This would exclude/comfirm any infective reason for it.

makesachange · 06/03/2007 11:04

Snuggle - excellent point. I personally think this needs further inspection by a doc or HV.

LOTF - Moltex are an eco disposable nappy. I'm not known for promoting sposies but these are pretty good as they go. They work really well, but from your perspective they are bleach and additive-free and therefore excellent for skin problems.

I don't suggest you start switching to sposies (God forbid) but when all else fails they are an option.

LIS, if you want a sample to see if it helps let me know.

check my fleece longies- they are doing an ace job! not big enough for night though.
they are funny!
ds likes them though.

LadyOfTheFlowers · 06/03/2007 12:34

the infection was e-coli which apparently lives in everyone's bowels anyway and is harmless except when it gets into where it shouldn't, ie the urethra.
the infection is now gone but we are going to the hosp on the 13th to have dye injected to check for kidney scarring and on the 20th for ultrasound scan.
when we were realsed from hosp he was given 'curing' antibiotics followed by 'preventative' ones which he has now finished.
surely it must be gone and cant be in his skin? can e-coli do that?

OP posts:
snugglebumnappies · 06/03/2007 15:05

LOTF, not a complete expert but am a nurse and midwife, have had a trawl round some info and it appears you can get an e coli infection through broken skin, so the trauma would have had to be there first before an infection could set in, might be worth getting a swab done if you can get him booked in with your GP.

makesachange · 06/03/2007 15:20

LOTF re scan - my DS went through the same thing. Scary but very rare there's a problem. Sure all will be fine.

xx

LadyOfTheFlowers · 06/03/2007 16:31

thanks ladies!
there was no injury there before the burn appeared.
will ask about it.
