Giving DD "the talk" as a dad

DD is 7 nearly 8 and its getting to a point where we probably need to talk to her about sex and also about growing up and going through puberty.
DH and I (both males) aren't really sure how or where to start.
We always assumed that she would ask us and then we would just answer her questions as honestly as possible. But she has never asked.

She does know where babies come from, just not how they got there.
We are really worried about getting it wrong.

So I'm hoping you can maybe give us some tips on how to do it or what to do to make it comfortable for DD.

Funnily enough this book popped up in my Facebook feed (from the Mighty Girl website)
www.amazon.co.uk/Its-So-Amazing-Families-Paperback/dp/0763668745
It gets lots of good reviews, says it's good for age 7-10 and includes lots of different types of families so I thought it might be appropriate for you!

Actually re my post above - that book might be slightly old for her, the 'It's not the Stork' one might be better for a 7 year old. Again it includes a

Thank you all, we have bought pads and the special teen packs/sets.
Great tip about putting them in the bathroom now so we have done that.

We do have a female friend who will talk to DD for us if DD wants that. I also had a quick chat with her teacher today in case DD wants to talk to her about it
But DH and I want to try talking to her first so she knows that she can talk to us if she wants too.

My DM never discussed stuff like this with me and i lived in a house full of DB's, i had to work it out myself and from what was shown at school which was limited in the 80's. I would never have asked my DM to get me sanitary stuff, they just appeared in my draw every month and i made sure they lasted, no way would i have asked DF.

My DC's have been brought up with the stuff in full view, know all about it, they would think nothing of asking their DF to pick up pads if they run out when they are at his or telling him they have had an accident. I remember dd3 when she was a toddler saying quick here mum your bums bleeding and handing me a pad Grin

Your DD will be fine and prepared Smile

My eldest dd is 15 now but when we had the chat at a similar age, I got the Lilets teen pack you have. She also had a book called 'The Little (pink?) Book of Growing Up' which focuses more on puberty and the changes in her body and emotions than actual sex.

When she actually started periods, I also got her a menstrual cup to go with her period kit. I think it's far too early for your dd but just wanted to let you know there is more than towels and tampons available.

Oh I forgot the most important thing. You're going to need chocolate. Lots of chocolate. 👍😊

The Mary Hoffman book 'Welcome to the Family' covers all sorts of different ways children come into different sorts of families - might be nicer for your DD than one that's all about mummies and daddies? And it has great Roz Asquith illustrations too.

Good luck!

I'd thoroughly recommend this series of books (different ones for different age groups) www.amazon.co.uk/Its-So-Amazing-Families-Hardcover/dp/0763668737 clear, informative, compassionate and inclusive. Our kids (same sex couple too) really appreciated seeing their family and identities reflected
