I ranted before DD was born about the fact I would use real nappies...As DD was my first I thought it sensible to use disposable for the first few weeks until I had my bearings a bit....well I'm ashamed to say DD is nearly 6 months and I am still using nappies that will be killing the earth in many many years to come

So basically need advice on the brand you have got on best with, I did look when PG but felt clueless...TIA

The more important question (rather than what we got on best with) is what is important to you... How high priority is cost (or lack of), ease of use, similarity to disposables, and drying times (do you plan to line/tumble/radiator etc...)?

kittypants · 17/02/2007 09:10

different nappies suit different babies.i think filling in nappy ladt questionaire is good start, remeber you dont have to buy anything!or do you have nappy agaent in your area?again, dont have to buy, just gather advice.
i found easiest thing to do,after doing those 2 was to buy different 2nd hand nappies, keep the ones that suited us,sell on those that didnt and buy more!
a nappy thats works well for me,may not suit yours or your lo's needs!i love nappy shopping!

JustJAMtarts · 17/02/2007 09:13

Thanks for the quick reply...well have tumble dryer(weighed up energy usage and landfill)and would like nappies that dry quite quickly....cost not at top of list as will save money even if we get the most expensive (hope that doesn't sound blasé) so I would put comfort for DD/ease of use at top of list.

Thanks again for the help!

oh and the vain part of me (which I do try to quash as much as possible) would like them to be as slim line as possible

You need to imagine your 'dream nappy' - imagine what it would be like i.e. quick drying, very abosrbent, slimness, all in one, two part, shaped or folding, cotton, fleece, hemp etc. Make a list then you have got a good place to start - you could get a nappy advisor to give you a demo and take your list with you. You could buy a few different ones to try which meet your criteria or you could buy a full birth to potty set!

My wish list would be:

one size: Onelife
Stuffable: was Fuzzi but am being lured by nature babies stuffables!
Flat: terry square
All in one - motherease
sized shaped: sandys
Whacky ones: weenotions, peeweez
wrap: onelife or motherease rikki

Good luck!

Flamesparrow · 17/02/2007 09:55

Right...

Slimness I say wambamboos, but they do take a long time to dry so would need tumbling if you want em done quickly. They need a seperate wrap.

Fast drying & reliability I love weenotions (but she is pregnant and a wahm, so you can't buy a bulk load of those) - they are a pocket nappy, so no extra wrap required.

Another fast drying, slim, easy one is bumgenius, but it doesn't suit everyone - it goes on like a disposable... again, a pocket nappy.

Of all of my collection, I still opt for the wbbs over the others.

thanks so much...have made note and will go nappy hunting

Do my weenotions have a waterproof layer in them??? Will go investigate!

8andahalfweeksandcounting · 17/02/2007 21:10

Definitely no waterproof layer in my weenotions although there is a pocket - assumed was for extra absorbency - do you have to stuff them anyway?

JustJAMtarts · 18/02/2007 07:17

Hi 8 1/2

I know so little am setting aside time to research all different nappies

Flamesparrow · 18/02/2007 12:19

I've got a feeling that weenotions do different types - so some are pocket and some need a wrap . Mine need a pocket.

Flamesparrow · 18/02/2007 12:19

Need a pocket?! Are pocket and don't need a wrap.

Roskvawantingsomesunshine · 18/02/2007 13:23

For quick drying without the tumble dryer, nothing beats my prefolds (and I'm building up quite a collection of other nappies )

JustJAMtart · 18/02/2007 14:25

Am I best to get a couple of each type to see what suits best?

lunavix · 18/02/2007 14:42

I agree with Flame and love my wambamboos

Having said that, dd has wambamboos and swaddlebees.

I was told to use swaddlebees as they are slim, I got one and was like ehhh? But they are an AMAZING fit.

The ones I mean are sized, and they are organic velour, with a sewn in booster (not the pocket nappy.)

DD is also 6m and slim, and they fit her amazingly. They cost a bloomin fortune, but are well worth it.

JustJAMtart · 18/02/2007 14:50

thanks lunavix...do you order them online?

canarygirl · 18/02/2007 14:52

I love my prefolds, they are cheap, absorbent, easy to wash and quick to dry. I use them with motherease rikki wraps which are the best and never leak, and either disposable liners or fleece. Both my daughters (5 months and nearly 2 years) are in them and I haven't had any problems. I also got some motherease birth to potty nappies and to be honest they are not as absorbent and for the price of them I would not say they are worth it. Prefolds are basic but do what a nappy needs to, I wouldn't use anything else. I use terries at night with a booster pad for extra absorbancy, I just feel they are a bit bulky for during the day with a mobile baby.

Good luck, once you take the plunge you won't look back. I shudder to think how full my bin would be if I went back to disposables - I just couldn't do it!

JustJAMtart · 18/02/2007 15:04

thanks canarygirl

I know - every time I put a nappy in my bin I feel so guilty

I've got a couple of swaddlebees too - I can use them at night, with a couple of boosters in. Got mine cheap on ebay.

Flamesparrow · 18/02/2007 19:22

I've got a swaddlebee aio on its way to try

Roskvawantingsomesunshine · 18/02/2007 20:37

Do swaddlebees do an AIO? I've got the fitted one that needs a wrap and the pocket version that doesn't.

makesachange · 18/02/2007 22:27

Yeah - very disappointing. It's basically the pocket with a booster sewn in, and a pocket available for more boosters.

I was SOOO excited when they brought it out but I sent my sample back as I didn't feel it offered enough for me to want to sell it. We just stick with the 3 size velour and the pockets as they're both great nappies.

They do a velour birth to potty now as well which actually is great. You get the GORGEOUS organic velour fabric, and a great design, although it's still a compromise and not as nice a fit as the 3 size velour. Very expensive too (although not as expensive as buying 3 velours of course).

Regarding prefolds, they work for many and they're cheap, but they're not as good at stopping leaks as shaped nappies (or indeed terries) as there's nothing wrapped around the sides.
