I have many out of the mouth of my dear grandad (DD's Great Grandad) but the best one yet was last week.

We were sitting having dinner and I was trying to persuade my 4 year old to eat her greens. Great granddad Pipes up with 'come on now HarryPoooters daughter, eat your greens, if you don't you will get fat and if you get fat your mummy will get told off by the police and go to prison!'

I was Hmmand my poor child was Shock.

Ha!

I have two daughters. People often say to dd2 aren't you beautiful, have gorgeous hair etc. Then they say 'oh and you are too' to dd1 grrr. It annoys me that they comment on their appearance anyway but it's always so obvious when they say this as an afterthought to DD2 who doesn't have blond curly hair and big blue eyes.

confusedcob · 10/10/2016 21:40

Sorry not necessarily a relative that one!

ItsNotUnusualToBe · 10/10/2016 21:44

My mother to my 13 year old daughter:

"Ooooh you've got legs like Upsy Daisy" ".....y'know, chunky"

Same mother, different daughter "Oooh look how FAT you're getting" to size eight pregnant daughter. Repeatedly. Despite being asked to not do so.

leaveittothediva · 10/10/2016 21:47

Yes, my mother, who told my son he was just like his father, and she didn't mean it as a compliment, she knew it, I knew it, and the most unfortunate thing was my son knew it. There's nothing wrong with his father, my mother hates him. That's all.

CalmItKermitt · 10/10/2016 21:49

"There's loads of Blackies on children's telly programmes these days aren't there?"

MIL in front of DSs when they were about 2 and 3 🙄

TeaBelle · 10/10/2016 21:49

You've been so naughty that mummy is leaving without you. Possibly not the worst but bad enough for my nearly 2 year old - I was only putting my bag in the car!

NataliaOsipova · 10/10/2016 21:50

My DD is really interested in a subject at school. My MIL (her grandmother, who is spectacularly uninterested generally) said "I think you're boring for liking that". Marvellous.....

My grandmother to my anorexic friend when we were teenagers.
'Ooh haven't you put weight on?'
She had but she needed to.
My grandma didn't know she was anorexic but she's bloody obsessed with weight. My friend never forgot the comment and it really set her back.
When DD was a tween she was a bit chunky and said grandmother commented on her always eating and 'you'll stay fat if you keep eating like that'
Let's just say it's the last time she ever mentioned weight in front if any of my children. Sad thing is, she didn't even realise what she said could be damaging.

I'm white British. DH is not. We live in England and he and all his siblings were born here.

His youngest sister has SEVERE foot-in-mouth syndrome and actually said to me in my own house, in front of my children "oh I'd hate it if

BotBotticelli · 11/10/2016 08:42

Awful MIL referred to the shop at the end of her road as "the paki shop" in front of 2yo ds

MuffyTheUmpireSlayer · 11/10/2016 08:48

DM telling teenage DNiece that "all men are bastards and cheat" and that we just have to expect it when DN got her first boyfriend Hmm

Also my DGP have been constantly commenting on my cousin's weight, whether it's a gain or a loss, since we were about 7 and don't do that to any of the rest of the GC. I don't understand why.

DM (again) telling DSis that she needs a man for money.

The list could go on...

duskonthelawn · 11/10/2016 08:53

MIL telling my DD, who can't even talk yet, that she'd need to diet because she ate all her tea.
I hope she doesn't keep making comments like it as DD gets older because if she does I will be saying something. What is with the weight obsession?

Feckitall · 11/10/2016 09:11

During a conversation with my DC and some other relatives about how tall and dark DS1 was and how blonde DS2 was and that he was shorter..SIL spouts..."well they all do have different fathers"....they don't! I was livid!

BigSandyBalls2015 · 11/10/2016 09:16

A parcel went missing a few Christmases ago, I managed to trace it and found out a neighbour had signed for it. Went and got it, all ok, they'd forgotten they had it etc etc.

MIL said "Bet I know which family took that - the black lot opposite, bound to be them". Shock.

Rosa · 11/10/2016 09:21

MIl telling DD 8 what she had bought her for her birthday with SIL. It is something she really wants and we have said that she can have it before as its an out doors thing . SO MIl went and told her what they had got her and blow me they still have not given it to her. .. DD is 8 in a few weeks. SO not only did she ruin the surprise but she hasn't given it to her yet either !

Highlove · 11/10/2016 09:37

My otherwise sensible DM calling 2yo DD big bum. We had words and she's not done it since. As a PP says, what is it with weight?

I was a quite chubby child and God knows, I knew it and was unhappy about it. my parents' performed every cliche possible in how not to deal with a moderately overweight child How on earth any adult thinks it will help to point it out, mock a child or teenager, or worse still, after a few drinks ask them in front of an audience if they eat too much and have they thought about dieting. Angry Yes - that actually happened to me age 13. If anyone ever does that to one of my DC, they won't get a second opportunity.

Wondermoomin · 11/10/2016 09:54

Mine mostly seem to come from the kids' great grandad on my husband's side.
"Who's sexy?" said repeatedly to a 4yo girl Angry

AlmaMartyr · 11/10/2016 09:54

MIL was talking about the importance of being "blood" relatives (Hmm) in front of a relative, who was sitting with her adopted daughter on her lap.

IAmAPaleontologist · 11/10/2016 10:08

My dad at the weekend at the dinner table with my dc age 9, 7 and who takes things to heart and worries about them and 4. I was saying I'd have to take the 7 year old to the dr as what started as a scab from an insect bite on her head was now a crater that wasn't healing and looked horrible. 7 year old asked what dr would do and I said she might need antibiotics. My dad starts talking a bout antibiotic resistance and finished with a loud, dramatic, "and do you know what happens if the antibiotics don't work? YOU DIE!" He then carried on by asking me if I'd seen a documentary on sepsis and that it had been full of people who were basically disintegrating.

WatchingFromTheWings · 11/10/2016 18:01

Not sure why post was removed. Read far worse on here. Hmm

Sammysquiz · 11/10/2016 18:05

My 5yr old DD: "can women marry women, and men marry men?"
My very conservative mum: "no, NEVER! What nonsense!"
Hmm
