When is too old for baby grows?

Just been out with my almost 5 month old at a mum&baby group. She was in a vest and baby grow (all in one thing with poppers). Another mum said 'Ohh, she is still in her pj's, you must have been in a rush this morning'.
Should I start dressing her in outfits now? I did notice all others in wee jeans or dresses etc. I just find those more of a faff.
What's your opinion?

Ds2 is nearly 5 months and wears a mix of baby grows/soft trousers and tshirts/vests. I have some nice bright baby grows that are daytime ones and the pale/baby blue type are pjs.
I can't stand seeing little babies in jeans and shoes etc. So uncomfortable looking!

Ilovenannyplum · 28/09/2016 12:49

DS wore them until he was around 4 months and then we switched to 'proper clothes' - he's just turned 2 and has a few for bed times because I love a squashy, clean little person in a babygrow!

I would never dream of commenting on how somebody else had dressed their baby though. Each to their own.

Mid- to late-twenties.

Those saying that toddlers wear them for bed - where have you found them age 2+ please. I would love to get dd some but no luck so far

RunningGingerFreckleyThing · 28/09/2016 12:54

I had similar comments made about my DC, OP. Mine were in babygrows until they could crawl.
Babies do look very cute in little outfits but as a pp said, the babygrow stage is so fleeting and they look older when in outfits.
Do what suits you.

SpecialStains · 28/09/2016 12:54

Mine is mainly in baby grows, with the occasional outfit if someone has given us one and we are meeting them! Actual trousers are such a faff for nappy changes and baby hates anything going over his head.

Babies in sleep suits and cardigans are the cutest imho!

Soubriquet · 28/09/2016 12:55

Sainsburys!

There oldest is 18-24 month but I've always found sainsburys clothes to be really big.

" I love proper clothes on babies. Each to their own!"

Each to their own indeed. I think tiny babies look ridiculous in proper clothes. DD weighed less than 6lb at birth and then took 3 weeks to regain her birth weight. She would have looked silly in proper clothes.

She was in babygros or babygro style clothes until she was about 9 months old.

Queenofthebrae · 28/09/2016 12:58

It's totally up to you what to dress your wee tootie in. Personally my DD is only in baby grows for bedtime, she's only a few weeks old but has a wardrobe full of clothes (we were very lucky to receive lots of gifts) so she's normally in dresses and tights with handknitted cardies during the day.

RatOnnaStick · 28/09/2016 13:03

God I must not be a proper mumsnetter. I hated the bastard poppers and switched to soft trousers and tops with a vest when they got bigger than 3 months old. Much easier.

Marmalade85 · 28/09/2016 13:03

My son is 9 months and uses baby grows as pyjamas only. A vest, a top and a pair of dungarees or soft tracksuit style trousers is hardly a massive effort but it's up to you to dress your baby however you like. Think mine was in 'outfits' fairly young.

CinderellaFant · 28/09/2016 13:08

' i wonder if there is a correlation between babies dressed in 'outfits' and wee girls dressed in heels, crop tops etc? I want my wee one to stay wee for aa long as possible!'
What on earth is that supposed to mean? Judgy much? My dd is now 4- she wore little soft outfits- cotton dungarees and little knitted all in ones. Do you think I'm now dressing her up in miniskirts and knee boots? No she wears joggers or leggings and trainers and whatever else she's comfortable in!
That comment made you sound as rude as the other woman tbh. What people dress their children in is nothing to do with anyone else.

Famalam13 · 28/09/2016 13:11

He lived in short rompers this summer batteries :) And I have a few for autumn/winter but found warmer ones harder to find. A relative bought him jeans, I almost weeped :(

Marmalade85 · 28/09/2016 13:14

Never baby jeans

Famalam13 · 28/09/2016 13:17

Or indeed wept

crayfish · 28/09/2016 13:27

DS was in babygrows until about six/seven months when I switched to little leggings/joggers and te-shirts mainly because he would flip over during nappy changes and the poppers were a bastard to do up. You can get babygrows with zips now though which are brilliant.

I hate seeing little babies in proper clothes, my DNeice is always in frilly little dresses at 5 months but they always buch or ride up and look really uncomfortable. Little jeans and shirts on boys is even worse though!

Ilovenannyplum · 28/09/2016 13:28

Tea
My 2yr old is still in 12-18 month clothes he's ridiculously tiny! so I don't struggle to find them for him.

I realise that's not massively helpful to you though Blush

eurochick · 28/09/2016 13:30

M and S and Next (online - I never find them instore) do bigger size babygros.

I kept mine in gros except for special occasions/visits until she went into full time childcare at around 9 months and our nanny dressed her. I suspect she would have been in them longer if I had stayed home longer.

I think there is a bit of snobbery/ reverse snobbery around what babies are dressed in. Little outfits on small babies are viewed as a bit common by some. Babygros are seen as lazy by others.

booellesmum · 28/09/2016 13:38

DD is now 15 but I remember vividly how upset I was when the health visitor made a comment at a weigh in about me not having time to get her dressed that morning. She had been bathed and put in a clean babygrow. She was about 4 months and it had not occured to me to put her in "proper" clothes. I carried on with babygrows in the day until she was about 12 months and after that she still wore them at night.
I personally prefer to see babies in babygrows - they look so much more comfortable.

Kel1234 · 28/09/2016 13:39

We started putting lo in outfits when he was around a month old.

moggle · 28/09/2016 14:57

I love the look of babygrows but what a faff! I found vests (long or short sleeve) and leggings or joggers or footed soft trousers much easier to deal with. From the time I started changing DD's clothes as part of a morning routine (and not out of necessity every three hours when she shat through her nappy) babygrows became nightwear. Probably about 2-3 months. the 6-9m babygrows were the last ones she wore as pyjamas as she was too wriggly and fought us putting them on -- she went into proper two part pjs then. I didn't find them practical for crawling age as she just crawled up inside them and would get frustrated! Now she's 22m though, I have put her in some fleece onesies and she's sooo cute so they may make a return this winter!

Oh and everyone saying they hate seeing babies in uncomfy jeans - there is a middle ground between babygrows and denim jeans you know!! DD wears "jeans" but when you look at them, they are just leggings really.

Mermaid36 · 28/09/2016 15:10

My girls are 5 months and wear babygro's most of the time. Very occasionally they have leggings and a vest or a tunic top.

I have a relative who has a similar aged baby who has 'outfits' on almost every day - he wears jeans, shirts and shoes and always looks uncomfortable

PersianCatLady · 28/09/2016 15:20

Personally I would say that babygros are suitable for as long as they fit and don't interfere with learning to walk.

5 months you are absolutely fine.

Shutupanddance1 · 28/09/2016 15:20

I've a 3 month old - fresh baby grow every night. During the day she's usually in Rompers or leggings and top. I've no denim jeans or anything for her but I do have soft feel dresses which are probably more comfy than baby grows.

Doesn't think that equates to crop tops when they are older Hmm

DigestiveMuncher · 28/09/2016 15:24

My 2 year old DD still wears baby grows although in and around the house and if we pop to the local supermarket or whatever but if out she's in normal clothes.
I am not a lazy mum my DD has various tubes coming from her stomach and chest & I have found baby grows are literally the only thing to stop her trying to pull these out!!
Even when she's 5 if I can get them custom made to her size she will still wear them Blush
