I thought I'd start this thread off for anyone suffering with windy/crying/colicky babies. Maybe someone has some tried and tested methods - or failing that we can sit here and count down the weeks until they grow out of it.

Anyone care to join?

Believe it or not I have tried that too! I use Dr Brown's since it is now the only bottle he will take and I went to the next level variable flow and he chokes on it....
I was wondering if he just gets over tired and over stimulated. He sleeps through the night, but as a consequence doesn't sleep much during the day and is right nosey little thing.
I'll just have to keep crossing off possibilities!

Think the overtired/over-stimulated thing happens with my dd too. I've been thinking about trying to get her into a bit of a routine re naps etc (haven't done this up until now). She's nearly 12 weeks.

Joshuasmum · 14/07/2004 12:09

Was also thinking of more routine, but just can't get my head around the Gina Ford thing! I get the principle of using structure, but if baby wakes up and isn't hungry what do you do - shovel food in??? If baby falls asleep after the 1st feed rather than after the 2nd do you keep them awake...??!? I don't know.

Our DS (12 weeks today) is more or less sleeping through the night now and did this without any major intervention from us - it seems as if he will find his own routine with a bit of guidance from us. Appreciate that this will become more important as they get older

Not a Gina Ford follower myself - her routines seem far too rigid to me (although I haven't read her books, just lots of mumsnet threads about them!). I think what you said about them finding their own routine with a bit of guidance is exactly how I want it to be

HD and joshua'smum - I've been lurking on here as my dd (11 weeks) is doing a similar thing this week of suddenly sleeping far less during the day and like yours she then gets very tired and stressed out by the evening. i'm fairly sure with her it's tiredness not colic. I copied your idea HD and put her "down" for a sleep at midday and she slept for 3 hrs and has been loads happier today. did it work for you both too?

Joshuasmum · 15/07/2004 18:03

Hi Fennel,

Yes, I'm starting to recognise the difference between a 'tired' fuss and a 'food' fuss. DS is quite an alert nosey thing and I haven't always made room for hime to sleep thinking that if he is tired he will jsut go to sleep. I hae started putting him in his cot if I'm home or covering the pram when I am out - I figure a short nap is better than none at all.

He slept for 5 hours during the day yesterday (pram and cot) which is unheard of, but wasn''t quite so ratty in the evening.

Started on the chamomile tea in the bottle....seems to be helping the burping...hold thumbs

Joshuasmum - I have been reading Elizabeth Pantley's 'no-cry sleep solution' and she reckons a 3 month old should be having about 5-6 hours naptime a day - so well done your ds yesterday!
Fennel, I haven't really got into any kind of routine yet so can't say what's working and what's not. Am inspired (by the Pantley book) to try harder at putting dd in her pram/carrycot when sleepy (rather than asleep) from now on.

joshuaamum, i've experienced similar situation to u recently in that ds2 (8weeks) started fussing and becoming distressed whilist feeding. As a result he was feeding less. I found he sounded a bit phelmy on the chest and thought perhaps he has a little sore throat, which may be hurting whilist swallowing milk, thus being fussy in refusing teat, although he was clearly hungry, thus he was frustrated! If he doesn't improve feeding by mon, i will take him to the GP.

re. sleep: ds2 is also rather alert, but can only stay awake for a max2.5 hrs b4 wanting a nap. I ususally put him down just b4 he nods off, knowing he will sleep. I find he sleeps longer that way, rather than keep him awake 4 ages and then get him to sleep. I let him guide me, and slowly the routine will be established.

I've always boiled some fennel seeds and put it in his milk for 2 feeds, which seems to help.

in the daytime have u tried putting him in his bouncer? Will he nod off himself whilist in there. ds2 does and often sleeps in there for an hour or 2.
