Crying Windy/Clolicky Babies Support

Metrobaby · 08/06/2004 00:33

I thought I'd start this thread off for anyone suffering with windy/crying/colicky babies. Maybe someone has some tried and tested methods - or failing that we can sit here and count down the weeks until they grow out of it.

Anyone care to join?

that's a great info resource georgina, glad things have clamed down slightly for you.

GeorginaA · 25/06/2004 20:47

Thanks katierocket - I just know I've jinxed myself completely now and am in for a week of hell .

my thoughts on the milti-vitamins bit are that it depends on the brand. first, you cant take regular ones, they have to be suitable for use during pg/breastfeeding. Second, most of the well-known mainstream brands have so many additives/fillers/binders/rubbish added to them that I would definatly not use them while bf, even if they say they are suitable.
The ones I've have used are called Solgar Prenatal Vitamins and are really good quality, and can be good for baby as well as mum. I know so many people who have used them and without exception everyone has said they felf much better while taking them and didnt have any problems with them.

if any of you are using vitamins, feel free to say which ones and I can give you my opinion on them , not sure if I have mentioned here but i am a nutritionist and have a health shop.

Sorry to butt in but had a look at your site GeogrinaA and thought it was fab

gloworm · 25/06/2004 21:41

lovely photos by the way...couldnt help but notice the mumsnet t-shirt!!!very cute

GeorginaA · 25/06/2004 22:51

Will look out for those Solgar ones - thanks gloworm. We've all got horrible colds at the moment (and reduced time to prepare as nutritionally good meals as I'd like!), so don't really want to miss out on the multivits. Currently (when I remember) using the Sanatogen Pronatal.

gloworm · 25/06/2004 23:11

sanatogen are one of the brands I would touch with a barge pole...sorry. they contain very very very low levels of vitamins and not great quality...not worth buying. dont know what additives they might contain but not at all suprised if they contain something that would upset bf baby.

(this is just my opinion bty)

you can get the Solgar ones from any good health shop(H&B dont do them) or you can get them at here

Solgar also do a great probiotic for babies, this will help with colic and trapped wind. its called ABCdophilus. it will help baby digest milk better (as well as boost immune system and lots of other benefits too). add a bit of this powder to bottle, or if bf add some to water/expressed milk and give with spoon.

gloworm · 25/06/2004 23:12

sorry, mis typed link.
its www.solgar.co.uk

GeorginaA · 25/06/2004 23:15

Thanks, will order some of the net I think!

hewlettsdaughter · 05/07/2004 16:04

Hi all. Is noone's baby crying a lot/being colicky at the mo? My dd has had some bad days recently - interspersed with some really quite mellow ones. It seems to be one or the other (the hardest thing is not knowing what the day is going to be like when I get up). She's feeding a lot at present so I wonder if that is contributing to the problem. It's hard to know whether to feed her straightaway, which does appear to comfort her, or try other things (burping, rocking etc - these don't seem to work when she's in full scream mode though).

GeorginaA · 05/07/2004 16:11

Sorry to hear you're still having a hard time, hd. TBH I think the cranial osteopath swapped my baby!! You'd never guess he was ever a colicky babe now. He can be hard to settle at times, but we just don't get that extended crying that we used to (thank God!)

Of course, I've just jinxed myself now and I'm in for an evening of hell...

hewlettsdaughter · 05/07/2004 16:17

That's great that the CO worked for you, GA. We have been for 4 (?) sessions now - the osteopath said she was pleased with the last two treatments but to be honest I haven't noticed a lot of difference in dd. Maybe it just works for some babies and not others. Or maybe dd would be much worse without it!
What do you think about the frequent feeding thing? Do you think that can make wind worse?

GeorginaA · 05/07/2004 16:33

There's a fair chance it might - especially if she's slightly refluxy or is sensitive to lactose (being predominately in the foremilk)? Then again, more frequent smaller feeds might help if it's reflux related, rather than having too big a tummy... ugh. Guess I'm saying I don't know!

Big thing that helped us cope at the time was to break the crying cycle with ANYTHING that stopped the crying (as the crying DEFINITELY set him up to be more windy/in pain). For us, the dummy was a godsend for that.

Problem is, we tried so many different things it's hard to pinpoint exactly which helped the most. And it could be that he would have started growing out of it at this age anyway?!

hewlettsdaughter · 05/07/2004 16:45

If only they could tell us what they needed...

GeorginaA · 05/07/2004 16:52

Yes, a big neon sign that flashed above their heads... "MUMMY! I'm hungry... FEED ME NOW!" - perhaps we could request that for the next model?

Metrobaby · 07/07/2004 01:52

I was wondering how everyone was not getting along. (whispering) I have some good news to report - ds is getting much much better now. We've not had a windy phase for 5 days now and he is getting much better at bringing up his wind I tried those nelson's teething granules that you recommended GeorginaA and I think that had a good effect. We've stopped using colief, and now just using infacol and the granules. But tbh, I'm not sure if it is that or that he is starting to grow out of it as he is now 10 weeks. Of course the down side of it is that he no longer sleeps through the night through utter exhaustion but I reckon its a fair swap for now

OP posts:
GeorginaA · 07/07/2004 11:25

Yes, I noticed that too - miss the lie ins

Mind you ... ds2 slept from 11pm to 5am last night... I'm hoping it's not a fluke.

gloworm · 07/07/2004 14:46

metrobaby, i was just wondering if you got my email and have you been able to try any of it?

kbaby · 08/07/2004 23:48

weve also had 2 sessions with the cranial ostepoath and so far havent seen any change. DD still cries most of the day although is fine in the evenings and nights!! The cranial ostopath recommended a medicine that a chemist in my area makes themselves. Its been made for the past 100 years and seesm safe enough! its really helped to bring dd's wind up and I now get a burp every feed. Doesnt seem to have helped with the crying though. She screams or grizzles in pain every 10mins during the day and ive resorted to rocking her back to sleep, or feeding her.

mrsforgetful · 08/07/2004 23:51

read the title....but not the thread-
so sorry if repeating something already said!

with my sons colic was relieved ONLY by using CHAMOMILLA drops made by Weleda.....a homeopathic remedy

amazing results almost imediately....and its great for calming teething tears too

dibooth · 09/07/2004 01:41

Hi Everyone, If you're bottle feedign try switching ti OMEO(can't recall the exact spelling but available in all supermarkeets and made by Cow and Gate) Comfort milk - it worked for us immediately and completely! Soemthing to do with the f=digetive system - some babies are Ok with long chain protetinsda dn sugars and some aren't. Those who aren't get colic and those whoa re don't! Comfort is thicker so less air too - well that's what the cow and gate helper told me on their baby helpline when I called to say how fab the product was!

If it helps then it's a godsend, if not you've onyl spent £8 trying!

We also did the osteopath thing which is very useful - but at £45 per half hour it's not cheap! - as it helps them sleep better we found, i suppose the baby finds it relaxing...!

Joshuasmum · 10/07/2004 00:18

I have been reading this thread for a while but this is my 1st post....

My 11 week DS is a lovely calm baby in general, but feeds have got progressively worse over the past 3-4 weeks. He is now mainly bottle fed (Cow and Gate for hungry babies) but still gets 2 breast feeds from me. Stopped exclusive breast feeding at about 8 weeks.

First the struggle was only in the evenings and now it seems to be at every feed ... lots of fussing and messing around with the bottle, thrashing around and crying. He is incredibly difficult to burp, but once we manage this he seems more settled and then starts to feed again. This process can take ages particularly since he is quite big and hungry and seems to need a lot of food. I am finding this sooooo wearing and distressing. My DH is feeding him now because I can't listen anymore and am starting to dread feeds.

For those experience mums out there - does this sound like colic? We have tried Infacol with limited success (makes him throw up) and have just started to give some gripe water. Any advice?

Dibooth, I took your advice and bought C&G OMNEO Comfort after researching on the web, but can't get it to flow out of the teat. Any advice? [I use Dr Brown's bottles and the 0-3 month teat has no flow and the next variable flow teat appears to be too fast.]

hewlettsdaughter · 11/07/2004 16:06

Joshuasmum, I'm not sure from what you have said whether your son has 'colic' or not - I have seen other threads on mumsnet though where people have described their babies suddenly resisting either the breast or the bottle - could it just be a developmental stage? TBH, I'm not really sure what I'm talking about, I just wanted you to feel that someone out there was listening! Hope things improve for you...

Joshuasmum · 12/07/2004 23:58

Thank you hewlettsdaughter!

Not sorted yet...changed formula back to normal premium and saw an improvement and then spent today being really grizzly and has been howling over his bottle fo rthe last 3 hours!

hewlettsdaughter · 13/07/2004 00:11

Oh boo Joshuasmum
Could it be related to the teats you are using? Too fast/too slow?
