Advice on cloth nappies please!

I started my 5 month old dd on cloth nappies yesterday and all worked fine during the day but this morning she woke up and her back was soaked. I used the pop-in pad so not sure what went wrong unless I wasn't careful to ensure that the whole nappy was under the wrap. Should I use an extra booster?
Also, I have a friend who has offered me some Nature wraps, can I use these with the mother-ease nappies? I am assuming that you can use any wraps?
The third query I have is I have just seen that mother-ease do a stay-dry nappy which has a built-in polyester lining. Is this better?

Thank you!

totsbots are good nighttime nappies. tye hold an outstanding amount of wee.

you can try booster up even more, i remember stuffing dd2 with 5 extra pads once as for some reason she was peeing more than usual.

Tiny1 - definitely make sure that none of the nappy is able to be seen outside the wrap - any of it poking out will cause it to wick onto clothing. Also if a wrap is too small (unlikely though) it can pinch around the nappy and cause a leak. On the other hand, if it's not fastened tightly enough it could gape at the waist or the legs. It should be snug, but not leave any marks on skin if you see what I mean.

I know a lot of people who swear by Motherease during the day, but find it's not brillliantly absorbant for night-time. You probably will need to boost the nappy a lot or consider a different brand for heavier a wetting at night. I would also recommend Totsbots - they're pretty bulky but as a result could absorb a small lake!

Is it naturebabies that your friend has got? They should fit fine over ME nappies and come in really nice colours.

I've seen the staydry nappy too and i'm not sure of the difference apart from the expense, but I'll see what I can find.

Hi Tiny1, just to follow-on from mudda.. I was advised that the 'staydry' nappy wasn't worth the extra expense and was a bit of a gimmic for people moving from disposables to cotton. Fleece liners keep the bottom exceptionally dry and I went for them, but must add I didn't try the staydry ones in the end so other people may have a different view.

I've just bought a couple of 'Burley boosters' from here and put one in my Bumble nappy at night. They soak up LOADS and don't add any extra bulk at night. I don't think they're mentioned on the website but you can email them separately for info. HTH

I've got the stay dry as a booster. They do keep ds dry but IMO the fleece lined one's are just as good. I use MEOS at night but put a terry with flece top booster in as well. Presently this does ds 4 hrs but to be fair he is still feeding throughout the night so is weeing for England!

MrsDoolittle · 31/05/2004 18:18

I read on a thread somewhere ath it is possible to buy a roll of fleece and cut it down for liners thus saving money on single liners. Does anyone know where I can buy it?

Fennel · 31/05/2004 18:43

Fabric shops sell fleece by the roll, or better try a market stall. That thread said it had to be 100% polyester not wool fleece though. I read that thread just after spending £15 on 15 small bits of fleece liner - wish I'd read it earlier!

we have motherease staydry and normal and I'd go for the staydry if I had the choice, my babies seem to prefer staydry linings so you don't have to change them as much. we have never used disposables so I don't think it's just a gimmick.

aliensinmygarden · 31/05/2004 19:05

I use totsbots at night with a Popo wrap... never had a leak yet (touch wood!)... as for the fleece liners I cut up a fleece baby blanket I bought in Asda for £3 and made loads and also used it to make baby wipes by sewing towelling on the back. Hope that helps!!

Hi

Not overly impressed with the stay dry nappies. They go abit bobbly and are not as soft and fluffy but then I don't use cloth at night and change the nappy lots.

MrsDoolittle · 01/06/2004 10:13

The latest stuff on this thread has me veering towards the bumble at the moment.
However, yesterday I used the bumble and too my surprise it leaked - I thought I had it well tucked in the wrap! It is very absorbant and I think more so than the MEOS. I boosted the MEOS last night with it's own pop in pad despite the fact you are not supposed to need it when baby is less than 16lb! Did the trick though.
What are the best wraps to use? The Motherease ones are so boring and at the menot they are too big. I am assuming that the wrap is why the bumble leaked. What do you think?

frogs · 01/06/2004 10:30

I've just ordered two Nature's Babies wraps from kittykins . The wraps are great, plenty of room, a little poppering system to adjust the size, and funky leopardskin/tie die covers. The service was fantastic, and they're cheap too.

Otherwise, at the expensive end of the market I've found the Imse Vimse Bumpy nightwrap is good too, with a huge velcro panel so you can get the fit just right. They will wick if the nappy becomes sodden, though.

FWIW I'm using pad-folded terries, which are bulky but absorbant (and cheap).

MrsDoolittle · 01/06/2004 10:46

How do the Totsbots rate against the bumble? They seem similar?

I think you are right bloss! I have only washed the bumble once.
I have talked to the nappylady today and I have ordered a combination of MEOS, bumbles and totsbots.

aliensinmygarden · 01/06/2004 14:03

Frogs.... my nature babes wicks at nights.... only the popos seems to last right through.... also have a redrap but that leaves the cot damp and makes MORE washing!!!!

karen99 · 01/06/2004 16:53

Yes, the Bumbles work best after a couple of washes. I prefer them to tots as I can prefold them to make life easier for dh & mil and they can take them straight out of the pile (whereas with tots I try and prefold but they always fall apart and have to remind dh about the fleece liner). Fit is similar, but bumbles is a more generous cut and I think perhaps a bit more bulky than the tots. However, the tots leave red marks round my ds' back too fitted I guess.

Agree, the wrap fit is soooo important, snug but not too tight to leave marks.

Tiny1 - how are you getting on?

kiwicath · 01/06/2004 18:48

Don't know about you girlies but since this new topic (naps and potty training) has started up, it's the first one I click on. If anyone told me a year ago that I'd be glued to the screen every morning and night, reading about poo, wee and various ways of containing it - I'd tell them where to get off!!!! Will have to take out loan if I buy anymore so happily watching you girls spend
