The "no question too stupid" reusable nappy thread

I thought it might be nice to have one thread where anyone planning to use reusable nappies can post questions about them. I think most people agree that the amount of information and options out there can be a bit bewildering when you're researching.
I know the whole nappies topic is a bit like this but at least if it's just one thread then the people who love talking about nappies (me Blush) can keep it 'watched' and always reply!

I know, I think it's all silly and made to confuse, but for example the 2 bamboo inserts that come with little lamb BTP pockets are technically 'boosters', as they're unlikely to be enough just by themselves (so why do they not come with something more substantial then? Hmm). An 'insert' is something that should work as a stand-alone, without boosting, so a bamboo trifold, for example.

Hufflepuffin · 12/05/2016 08:18

Oh! Your problem may be having a fleece liner on top of the fleece pocket bit? I think two layers of fleece can cause problems?

I've had some luck but still a little dampness so I will try without the liner next nappy! Thanks Smile

I'm getting on ok with these new nappies but my baby needs changing very regularly. So my question is when it comes to washing the nappies is it better and cheaper to wash them daily and air dry or to wash every two days and tumble dry?

Nan0second · 12/05/2016 18:11

I would buy some pre loved now you know what works, wash every 2 days and air dry!
(I may be missing the point...)

Heavenscent86 · 12/05/2016 18:41

I would but I can't find the ones we use preloved so would have to buy more new and I can't afford that right now. I have quite a good amount but just not enough to go through two days and air dry.

Nan0second · 12/05/2016 19:27

What are you using heaven?

Nan0second · 12/05/2016 19:28

Also is it poo causing the changes or wee? How long are you getting? Is there a way we can make them last longer?

Heavenscent86 · 12/05/2016 19:49

I'm using the grovia all In two system with outer shells and snap in pads. We've had a few leaks but I think this is down to not putting them on right as I've adjusted the fit and not had leaks since then. Wet nappies need changing perhaps every 2-3 hours and he does about 4 poos a day at the moment.

Nan0second · 12/05/2016 20:16

I see from reading earlier in the thread that baby is still quite young and small?
Options could be to get some extra soakers as you don't need as many of those as you can just reuse the wrap part?
Alternatively, a few second hand little lambs could give you some breathing space for minimal outlay. You'll be able to sell them on easily too. Max £2.50 per nappy if in v good condition including booster and liner. £4 for a size one wrap.
Small gnappies are an option if you're slightly richer and don't get sucked in to the nice prints!

Tumble drying can shorten life of nappies and isn't ideal regularly. Washing daily is quite hard work!

Often things change as baby grows so it's not worth getting hundreds of nappies of one type as what is great now may not work with a fatter baby etc...

Hufflepuffin · 13/05/2016 12:05

The inserts would suffer from being tumblr dried daily but I'd fish the outers out before tumbling (or keep them out of the wash as long as possible!). As a pp said, your favourites will be constantly changing so it's good to keep some variety in the stash!

Hi I'm new here and have just started trying for my first with me partner (fingers crossed) I love the idea of reuseable cloth nappies and have done quite abit of research but I still need opinions please as I'm a little stuck! What do you all think of the bambino mio misoft 2 piece birth to potty set? Do you all think it's a good make? They seem quite affordable compared to other brands as tesco do a set of 20 with 4 size 1 covers and 4 size 2 covers for 109.95 with 50 mio liners and 100g mio cleaner, you can get a set with patterned covers for an extra £20 too, does that seem like a good price? All the other sets I've looked at have come to well over £200..Tia for any help 🙂

Nan0second · 22/05/2016 20:09

Please please please don't buy a set! The chances of it being the right make for your baby are remote or that the same brand will work until potty training!
It is the single most expensive mistake people make.
Hire a newborn kit when baby is first here (or use cheap nappies like terries or Muslins or 2nd hand little lambs) then get a library kit when baby is 12lb or heavier. That will mean you only buy stuff that definitely works for you (or can pick up a few bits second hand of other people's expensive mistakes!)

Hufflepuffin · 22/05/2016 21:12

Argh my last post should have said:

Does anybody know if tumble drying inserts helps with absorption? I accidentally put one of my bamboo inserts through and it feels softer and like it might absorb more.

Nan0second · 26/05/2016 18:32

Doesn't alter absorption.
It ruffles up the fibre and makes them super soft though!

EvansAndThePrince · 26/05/2016 19:39

Thanks! I think I've found a fix to my leg leaks, I've got pockets but the last nappy I used I put the inserts on the outside of the pocket me left the pocket empty and she was dry. Think because she's bigger she's flooding the nappy and it wasn't filtering through the fleece layer quickly enough. We live in a hard water area so I'm going to put vinegar in with the next strip wash I do and then tumble dry them to get them a bit softer if they're going to be against her skin.

ClutterofStarlings · 03/06/2016 19:51

I think you need a wrap with bamboozles, I do with my plain ones anyway (I don't understand why they made the cute stripies that you have to cover!).

Does anyone know, can I use a different wrap over a nappy, so could I use a miosolo wrap over my totsbots?

Nan0second · 04/06/2016 09:11

Yes most nappies can be used with most wraps.
In fact, some nappies are great but their 'matching' wraps are rubbish (yes tots bots I am thinking of you first) so I always use a different brand!
It's all trial and error :)

randomsabreuse · 26/06/2016 10:30

Anyone have any tips for scrawny active babies and velcro nappies. DD is 10 months and still on full overlap on the Miosolo btps from Aldi. Obviously the velcro only grips in the middle so the sides of the front escape as she prowls. I do have Little Lamb and TJs with poppers (still single overlap popper unless she's just eaten and due a poo) but when the grandparents really struggle with poppers when they look after her (and velcro is easier to do up more or less when she's in a roll and bog off mood). Same problem in disposables I guess for same reason!

LotsofDots · 01/07/2016 18:49

I used Velcro bumgenius on DD2 who was 9th centipede for weight and about 80th for height, so superscrawny. We didn't have any issues with leaks or coming untucked at the front? Might be worth a try?

LotsofDots · 01/07/2016 18:49

Centipede? Yes, autocorrect that's what I meant...Confused

Nan0second · 01/07/2016 19:13

Bambino mios are big compared with other nappies but I can't think of a nappy that's good for skinny legs that isn't with poppers. I assume you are using the lowest rise with the bambino Mio?
Although gnappies might work? Or I had some old style bumgenius pockets that I struggled to get round my chunky baby so maybe get one of those? The major problem with Velcro is that most babies learn to undo it at 14-18months so then you're in trouble...
Worth a nappy library visit to get some better advice / borrow a couple?

randomsabreuse · 01/07/2016 22:00

Thanks. I should be able to cope with the popper nappies I have... She's already undone disposables if wearing nothing but! Velcros can wait until I fatten her up a bit and overnight when she's moving less.

Yep still lowest rise on everything! Easier in winter when clothes prevent access - I was expecting velcros to be interfered with but thought they'd be good for between sizes and grandparents...

Nan0second · 02/07/2016 10:03

Definitely consider trying a gnappy then. You can get Preloved for about £5 with a pouch if block colours. There are specific gcloths but you can just use a size 2 booster in there (not microfibre next to skin). We use hemp or cotton with then a small bamboo folded underneath at the front, which works reasonably well.
I would imagine pop ins would work similarly well on a skinny child. Get the bamboo ones (v2) though as the minky aren't nearly as good!
