The "no question too stupid" reusable nappy thread

I thought it might be nice to have one thread where anyone planning to use reusable nappies can post questions about them. I think most people agree that the amount of information and options out there can be a bit bewildering when you're researching.
I know the whole nappies topic is a bit like this but at least if it's just one thread then the people who love talking about nappies (me Blush) can keep it 'watched' and always reply!

Thanks spots! No idea which version we have, they're 3 years old... they do feel pretty wet when i change them and they are microfibre type fabric that probably doesn't absorb much. think i probably need to get the boosters out and see what happens! Trying hard not to spend tons of cash or take the lazy disposable option... will report back.

We have cheeky wipes and they're great. Not sure what they are made of, they are basically flannel material.

LotsofDots · 01/05/2016 09:08

Anyone looking at buying cheeky wipes, they have 25% off on their website until end of today.

MindfulBear · 01/05/2016 11:31

Yes and cheeky wipes also do reuse able sanitary products which have been highly recommended to me.

They also have double compartment zip wet bags.

25% off everything on their website right now!

I do not need to know about that discount, dammit!!

Well there is one clear winner from my nappy trial mainly because a fair few don't fit. That is the grovia hybrid. It's very adjustable with the Velcro fastenings and I love the snap in pads. It also seems like less to carry around with you. The Charlie banana is nice but doesn't quite fit properly yet but I think I may keep the one from the trial as it may be an option in the future. The milovia on the other hand we really didn't like. It gaped ridiculously around LOs legs and no way to adjust it and you have to buy new inserts for a 1 year old and above. I'm not sure what what we will do about a night time nappy so will keep LO in disposables for a while until we figure out the best option.
I think with this nappy trial we have just had the opportunity to see which ones fit. The Miosolo is nice but takes forever to dry so that puts that one out really. The grovia hybrid was great though so we are going to stick with that and hope it's the right decision and we get on ok.
What does everyone do when they go on holiday? Do you use disposables for that?

LotsofDots · 02/05/2016 09:07

Tots bots are selling their trial kit which includes a bamboozle stretchy and wrap with 50% off at the moment for new customers so I think it is £23 for 5 nappies - might be worth trying if you are still looking for a night time solution?

Heavenscent86 · 02/05/2016 09:22

Ooh thank you. Is that on the tots bots website?

Nan0second · 02/05/2016 12:22

heaven yes it is. It needs a code but the code is on website too! Cheapest alternative is to join a Preloved nappies Facebook site - people sell bamboozles for £4-6 per nappy so a good way to buy a couple to try. Motherease wraps over the top are brilliant (better than tots bots stretchy wraps), so are blueberry coveralls. Having said that the new peenut wraps are supposed to be good.

Spotsondots · 02/05/2016 13:40

Glad the nappy trial has been useful heaven. You'll likely need a two parter for night time but you can always look at that later.

We have done a mixture of cloth and disposables in holidays. If travelling light or flying, as we will be this summer, we use disposables by day and cloth at night. We always use cloth at night because it's the only thing that works. Even my very cloth-dubious DH accepts that! In center parcs we used the grovia hybrid shells with their disposable inserts part time (only have 2 shells) and disposables the rest of the time as there were no washing facilities. It's about whatever works for you. Smile

Heavenscent86 · 02/05/2016 14:36

Well I guess we have time to figure out what works for holidays before we go away. We tried a little lambs for night time but it was saturated within a couple of hours. No leaks but we can't feasibly change his nappy every two hours overnight hence why we are back to the drawing board there. Plus his bum was enormous. Surely he would get hot with so much nappy and a wrap over the top?

cudbywestrangers · 02/05/2016 16:06

Well our easyfits clearly need boosting, lasting much better now. Thanks for the advice.

And thanks for the heads up for the cheeky wipes discount, have ordered some more as with a toddler in nappies at night as well as baby i've been running out and resorting to baby wipes half the time and they aren't half as effective for poo! Never mind the cost.

We have always used disposables when going away. Have never had room in the car for bucket etc and i like the occasional break from the washing! Although we have used disposables today and had a massive up the back poonami requiring a full change of clothes which would have been contained by a proper nappy...

Ditsy79 · 02/05/2016 16:16

We tried to use cloth if we were on holiday somewhere with a washing machine, like a holiday cottage, but used disposables elsewhere. We didn't take the bucket with us, just bought a huge wetbag for stink-free storage.
Have to confess we ended up using disposables at night, although used cloth until about 8months. Our daughter kept waking up, and we thought it might be because cloth felt cold when wet, but I do wish we had persevered a bit more

LotsofDots · 04/05/2016 16:41

I got my totsbots trial kit today - how cute are the teeny fits?!

I also noticed that Morrisons are selling bambino mio AIO at £10 at the moment, seems a good price, if anyone is trying to increase their stash!

EvansAndThePrince · 10/05/2016 16:45

Hello. May I ask for some advice?
I bought pocket birth to potty's when DD was 3 or 4 months. We went on holiday and I never got back into them other than trying them every couple of months to find that they didn't fit great and leaked at the legs really quickly.

At the moment (she's 13m) they look to fit really nicely but at the first pee it feels damp at her legs again.

I'm putting them all through a strip wash but the bamboo booster isn't soaked through so it isn't that she's needing changed more regularly.

Any advice on fit? Tips and tricks?

I do wonder if the booster is sitting too far towards the back just now so next nappy I'll try having it closer to the front (there's an inch/and inch and a half empty at the front).

EvansAndThePrince · 10/05/2016 17:05

This is where it's getting damp, you can see the wet patches. The booster was around 2/3 wet.
Forgot to mention I have a fleece liner in (that appears to be working)

Hufflepuffin · 10/05/2016 17:58

I started getting leaks in pockets about the same age, I think it's when they start real wees rather than trickle ones! What fixed it for me was adding a layer of microfibre between the fleece and the booster.

OP posts:
Hufflepuffin · 10/05/2016 17:59

Also how many times has the bamboo been washed? Can take 10 washes to get them good and absorbent!

OP posts:
EvansAndThePrince · 10/05/2016 18:23

Thanks so much for replying!
They've definitely been washed that many times Smile I've been getting leaks every time I've tried since she was 6 months Sad
When you say between the booster and the fleece, do you mean inside or outside the pocket? I currently have the booster inside the pocket and the fleece against her skin.

Hufflepuffin · 10/05/2016 19:15

Fleece against skin, then (inside the pocket) cheap microfibre insert then a bamboo booster under that.

OP posts:
EvansAndThePrince · 10/05/2016 21:17

I'll look into that, thank you!

BendydickCuminsnatch · 11/05/2016 13:46

I'd try and find some hemp, a microfibre plus a bamboo booster (rather than a bamboo insert) is nowhere near enough for DS, he's wee through that in about 45 mins.

Hufflepuffin · 11/05/2016 14:16

My bamboo booster is the little lambs trifold, folded into three then doubled over at the front (for a boy), hemp would be slimmer though!

OP posts:
EvansAndThePrince · 11/05/2016 19:24

What's the difference between an insert and a booster?!

So, what should I have?! I'm lost.

Hufflepuffin · 11/05/2016 19:34

I've never worked out the difference! To my mind they're the same, I just call it an insert if it came with the nappy and a booster if it's extra. Don't know though! X

OP posts:
EvansAndThePrince · 11/05/2016 19:37

By that logic I currently have - bamboo inserts inside the pocket (doubled over where she pees) and an hourglass fleece liner against her skin. Had more luck with that tonight and she drank A LOT today so all the bamboo was soaked and it seemed to be holding.
