i probably sound a bit stupid! but i'm pretty new to real nappies and keep reading about wicking?
What does it mean?

I think wicking refers to drawing the wetness away from the skin. So it is nicer for the baby if the wee 'wicks away' from its skin. For example, the motherease onesize come as standard or with a built-in liner of material that keeps baby's skin dry. Hope this helps.

JoJoBrooks · 18/12/2006 15:24

ahhhh. i see. that sheds a little light on the situation!!!
my son actually has quite a sore bottom! i use flushable liners on terry folded inserts to pad his nappy.
do you think this could be why?
do you think reusable inserts might be better?

Does anyone use a nappy wipe warmer? I found the Prince Lionheart brand online and I am planning on buying one just to avoid using cold wipes for my newborn. Do they really work? It costs about £24.

Pls ignore the message about nappy wipes warmer; i should have added it in as a new thread. Apologies . I have now added as a new discussion.

JoJo - fleece liners are apparently the way to go to reduce moisture contact with baby's skin. Haven't got round to getting any yet, but must do .

SparklySnowflakeKid · 18/12/2006 18:01

Fleece liners are really good for dry bottoms - just nip to your local fabric shop and make your own - really cheap. Wicking can also refer to when your wraps are leaking - but doesn't seem to be your problem. Vaseline or a nappy barrier cream like metanium for a day or two may also clear it up quickly. If your baby has a sore bottom and you use paper liners the liner can sometimes stick to the sore patch and make it sorer - so fleece or a barrier cream would be good.

JoJoBrooks · 18/12/2006 19:10

thanks sparkly. i've tried sudacrem but it just made it worse!!! have got some matanium in the back of the cupboard i'll fish it out.

my son's nappies are soaked through in the morning so was thinking of trying a different brand at night.

any suggestions?

Tots Bots are very good at night, I use mine with a fleece liner. Also have just purchased a CLWT TWT and can't believe how lovely and soft it is though I've only used it once.

MerryChipmonkAndAHappyNewey · 18/12/2006 19:46

BTW Jojo, Sucocrem is not a good idea with cloth nappies, it can make them water-repellent which is not good for obvious reasons. Might your ds have a thrushy nappy rash? That is sometimes the reason for a persistent rash. Canestan works well if that's the case.

pitchounette... that is what i understand wicking to be as well... a bit of nappy not in the wrap touches clothes and as a result they get wet all over!

JoJoBrooks · 18/12/2006 20:49

pitch and nanny, that's definatly not my problem. i use weenees! they have a seperate pouch inside the wrap that holds the stuffing,so there's nochance of i coming out.

weenees are fab and look soooo cute (like little pants!

JoJoBrooks · 18/12/2006 20:56

merrychipmunk, what would you suggest uing as an everyday nappy cream with cloth nappies?
going to the docs about ds bowels (he can't go!) so will get them to look at his nappy rash just incase.

bless him, i had to put him in the bath earlier to soothe it, which is not easy with a broken ankle!!!

OP posts:
JoJoBrooks · 18/12/2006 20:58

my ankle not his! god we sound like a right load of hypocondriactes!!!

SparklySnowflakeKid · 19/12/2006 12:46

I have used weenees too - love the design but ds2 kept weeing out the side of the pouch! A fleece liner would fit in lovely. Could use vaseline on a daily basis - the fleece liners should do most of the job for you anyway.

JoJoBrooks · 19/12/2006 15:39

sparlky - what kind of padding did you use in your weenees?

you mentioned fleece liners, what shape do you cut them if you make your own? i've only ever used flushable paper ones.

OP posts:
SparklySnowflakeKid · 19/12/2006 18:19

I used either the weenee pads or prefolds - but they now do a microfibre cloth which looks good - you get get them at www.teamlollipop.co.uk. I think the regular prefolds are a little on the bulky side/inflexible compared to terries or micro cloths.

With fleece liners I bought a 25cm width of fleece and cut it into oblong shapes about 25cm x 12 cm - got about 20 out of the piece of fabric - it cost me £3.50. You can get some really good fleece patterns too.

JoJoBrooks · 19/12/2006 21:36

the fleece liners sound great wiil def give them a go.

yeah i use terries at the mo but was gonns give micro fibre cloths a go.

thanks sparkly

Jo, you can get fleece liners on ebay reaaly cheap which I found better than cutting my own as scissors struggled! put 'funky bright liners' into the search and se what you think...matching wipes also.

I find that the best microfibres are Wilki's 3 pack of coloured ones from cleaning aisle - dirt cheap too.

Night nappies...try Fluffles for fast drying or bamboo (just got some Wambamboo which seem good). Boost both with the microfibre for a good 13 hour nappy - even with 3 night feeds!

JoJoBrooks · 19/12/2006 22:13

thanks launnrylover.

i use terry insert normally, so would you just add the microfibres with them, as i'm guessing there not big enough to fill it.

will look on ebay now thanks.

laundrylover · 19/12/2006 22:25

yes just fold it up and put it in best way it fits.
let me know if you find those liners as can give you seller details if not tho there are a couple of women do them I think.
BTW if you invest in some shaped night nappies, check out 'wacky wraps'....they look fab and am about to treat myself to a couple!! How sad am I???

JoJoBrooks · 19/12/2006 22:36

def gonna go to wilko's tomoz then!!

just ordered some liners on ebay. 10 for 3.00 inc delivery bargin!!!! and they look well cool (paw prints and burburry)

OP posts:
laundrylover · 19/12/2006 22:38

if you think they're cool, check out the wacky wraps.

got to get sleeping child off my arm and put my boob away!!!!

JoJoBrooks · 19/12/2006 22:40

good night

laundrylover · 19/12/2006 22:44

Be warned, this one used to go all night but likes a few feeds now at night as at 9 months is just too busy during the day to feed.
