Have a 3month old. Baby food jars say start at 4 months health visitor says 6 months. I feel he is very hungry and ready for solids however have been told his digestive system may not be fully developed. Please help.

My point was just that baby rice isn't even 'real rice' but a processed form which makes me think there's not much point as it doesn't have the same nutritional benefits as breast milk or even formula.
Maybe I'm just still feeling guilty that breast feeding didn't work for us and don't want to go down more processed foods since I feel I'm already giving her processed milk but that's my own demons.

That'll be the difference, then. As it is, it has to have B vitamins added back into it before it's sold as baby rice.

Wow, 10 weeks? DD is 14 weeks and pretty big (91st centile) and I couldn't imagine feeding her anything but milk. She's BF and feeding every 2 hours.
If you're just going with what your mum is doing, that's not mothers instinct is it?

Scattymum101 · 13/10/2015 20:02

Lol I don't know. I suppose I wouldn't feed myself purely mashed
Potato as it wouldn't fill much of my nutritional needs so I would rather wait and feed my baby a variety of things at 6 months than tank them up on ground rice when I could just give them milk lol.
Suppose it's personal preference about the baby rice but I think it tastes foul so wouldn't give it to my baby. I tried her with baby porridge once and she threw it at me, then I tasted it and realised why lol x

Thank you hon.
I never really tried with dd1 as I had a difficult birth and was too exhausted but I had a ridiculous idea in my head that because I really wanted to this time that it would all work. X

So long as you don't turn it into another discussion about drivers, pedestrians and right of way (there's been 4 or 5 of those, today) I think it's a natural thread meander, zzzzz

OP, you said baby was having six bottles a day? Is that correct? If they aren't sleeping through yet, that's only one feed every fours. My baby was having a full feed every two hours at that age. Just need to feed them more often Grin

Artandco · 13/10/2015 20:27

Think of it like this, if your hungry what's going to fill you up more. A raw carrot, or bowl of ice cream? Which is more calories? That is why you wouldn't give a 'hungry baby' food instead of milk. Formula and breast milk are designed to be high calorie and filling

If your baby is taking 9oz every 3 hours, I would start giving him 7oz every 2 hrs. Across the day he will be getting extra. 6 feeds isn't a huge amount is it anyway? At 3 months mine fed every 90mins-2hrs between 7am-11pm. So 8/9 feeds maybe more.

As an adult do you go 3 hrs without a drink?

Kimmi23 · 13/10/2015 20:35

My little girl is only now just 6 months and j have bread fed her until today. I started her on food around 3 and half months and she loves it. She eats meals all day as well as her bottles. It makes her less hungry and she is settled longer. I just sat her in a bouncer to feed she could hold her head for a while to this made it easier, as well as her following my hand when I ate. If you feel your baby is ready then try baby rice before or after a milk feed. Hope this helps Grin

CultureSucksDownWords · 13/10/2015 20:42

Kimmi, you've no way of knowing if early weaning will cause your DD any problems in the future. I sincerely hope not, but all the evidence points to increased risks of a variety of gut related issues such as coeliac disease, IBS and allergies. I don't understand why anyone would ignore sensible and evidence based guidelines from the NHS when it's just a matter of a few weeks to wait. Seriously, what's the rush?

MustBeLoopy390 · 13/10/2015 20:43

Kimmi lets hope she also loves the digestive issues you have possibly caused that will only manifest later in life Grin hope this helps

Coming from someone who has issues most likely due to early weaning I'd rather my idiotic family were told that, than left to do as they pleased.

Whatthefreakinwhatnow · 13/10/2015 20:50

Me too mustbe Sad

Scattymum101 · 13/10/2015 20:53

Im confused Kimmi. Is it expressed breast feeding? Sorry just was confused by you saying you've breast fed her until today but you also said she takes all her bottles.
Not nit picking but just wondering.

Also feeding in a bouncer can be dangerous as they're not upright.

Sorry if I sound like a bitch. I've had wine lol.

"I started her on food around 3 and half months"

Why?
Unless a health professional advised you to give solids why on earth would you go against the guidelines and jeapordise her health later in life? What did you hope to achieve?

"I asked yes was going to wait then my family told me how ridiculous it sounded and that I should give him some baby rice so my mum gave him some so I guess I'm just going with what she's doing"

Why on earth do you follow your mum's out of date and quite frankly unhealthy advice? All health professionals now advise not to wean before 6 months, so why do you think your mother knows better than a qualified health professional? Get a backbone and stand up to her. You are your baby's advocate.

See, this is why people should have to pass a basic test before becoming parents.
