Grobag confusion

I'm a bit confused about what I put my daughter in under her grobag.

Up till now she was wearing a long sleeve vest and a 1 tog grobag but the website says that now it's a bit colder she should be wearing a long sleeve vest AND a cotton pyjama top.

I haven't even seen cotton pyjama tops for 2 month olds - only sleepsuits - do these even exist?

Would a long sleeve vest and a sleepsuit be too hot?

They do baby pyjamas in Asda.

We used a vest (short sleeve) and a sleep suit when it got colder.

But then DS liked having a warm torso/legs and didn't mind too much about his arms.

When it got colder, we tended to up the tog on the grobag accordingly, or if DS had gone in a lighter bag and the temperature plummeted, then we used a cellular blanket on the top.

Our house was freezing last winter - she went to bed in a short sleeve vest, sleepsuit and 3.5 tog bag.

For the last few months she's been in short sleeve vests (long sleeve if temp under 20 degrees in the room), and a 1 tog bag, but when I went and got her this morning her hands and feed were freezing. Tonight she's gone to bed in a long sleeve vest and a 2.5 tog bag. Temperature was 18 degrees in her room.

My daughters hands were freezing this morning after sleeping in a long sleeved vest and 1 tog grobag - room was 21 degrees though in night. Do cold hands mean a cold baby though as if the room is 18 as recommended how could they ever stay warm!

I onto understand why they only have 0.5, 1 & 2.5 tog. I was hoping to buy a 1.5 to start using now - have used blankets so far, but apparently they don't do them?

Sparrowlegs248 · 07/09/2015 09:09

Also, what dk you do with the excess at the feet end when they are in the Moses basket?

lilac3033 · 07/09/2015 09:10

I got a 2.1 tog from Marks and Spencer's, been using that with a long sleeved vest in a 19 degree room. Works perfectly.

Elledouble · 07/09/2015 09:15

I think we've got 1.5 tog ones - from Asda/Sainsburys - will have to go and check if that's right. My son has been sleeping in vest, sleep suit and grobag. It's pretty cold in our bedroom (we have to keep the windows open because of mildew) so I folded the scratch mitt bits of his sleep suit down, his hands have been freezing cold.

jennifer86 · 07/09/2015 09:51

We have 1.5 tog growbags from Sainsburys. Currently DS wears this with babygrow underneath. Will add a short sleeved vest probably in a few weeks when it gets colder. Not sure about if it gets colder than that, though, might have to get some thicker growbags as he moves around too much for blankets!

sophiec96 · 07/09/2015 13:11

Ive got a 1.5 tog grobag think i may need to get a warmer one though its getting colder!!

DriverSurpriseMe · 07/09/2015 13:15

I always put mine in a sleep suit and a Grobag - it's what my 16 week old slept in last night. Room was about 19 degrees. He doesn't overheat.

Honestly, these Grobag guidelines are a bit silly, demanding naked legs! I know SIDS prevention demands that a baby doesn't overheat, but that's more to do with being drastically overdressed in layers and blankets, not a sleepsuit under a Grobag.

Scotinoz · 07/09/2015 13:44

I always thought the GroBag recommendations would leave them hypothermic. My 4mth old is in a long sleeved vest, sleepsuit/babygro/whatever you call them and a 3.5tog bag. The room drops to about 18, and she gets cold hands.

I used the same clothes with my eldest but a 2.5tog bag and a couple of blankets.

All against the recommendations but we're wimpy Australians and feel the cold.

Buglife · 07/09/2015 17:20

DS in a sleepsuit and a 2.5 tog now as his room was about 18 degrees last night. Under 20 degrees I go sleepsuit and thick bag, over 20 I go 1.5 bag, around 23 I go for a vest and over 24 I go for a 0.5 bag and vest or nappy. 26 was the hottest this year.

RoganJosh · 07/09/2015 17:27

I remember that they're meant to have freezing cold hands.
I'd take pj top to be the same as long sleeved vest. (Or if you ever find you need to layer up, you could add a long sleeved daytime top.
We tended to do vest under babygro though. )

addictedtosugar · 07/09/2015 17:52

PJ top is a long sleeved tee-shirt. Does that help?

Dixiechick17 · 07/09/2015 20:56

To check a baby's temperature you need to touch the chest of the back of the neck. Hands and feet are usually fairly cold, if the chest feels cold I add anothet blanket or layer.

Dixiechick17 · 07/09/2015 20:57

Sorry meant to say chest OR back of the neck.

WorldsBiggestGrotbag · 07/09/2015 21:26

Cold hands and feet are normal in a baby, you should gauge their temperature by the back of their neck instead.
At the moment DD is in a long sleeved vest and 1 tog gro bag. Our room is about 19-20 degrees.

WhatsTheT · 07/09/2015 22:04

I tend not to follow the grobag rules anymore as it used to never match up to how my baby felt felt. IT's not exactly winter now and she's in a 2.5tog bag with a vest and a baby grow.

You've gotta remember the temp drops as your sleeping and baby isn't as padded and squished up in a bed as we are.

NickyEds · 08/09/2015 20:53

I'm with WhatsTheT and Scotinoz in thinking that the recommendations perhaps leave babies a bit cool. My 21 month old and 7 week old are both in the same; Short sleeved vest, pjs/sleepsuit and 2.5 tog gro bag. Last night I was in my flannelette pjs (sexy) and big feather duvet and was just comfy. I remember when ds was born (December) we had him in a vest and sleepsuit with one cellular blanket gently draped over him whilst we were in pjs, duvet, top cover and hot water bottles- no wonder the poor little mite didn't sleep! He was probably freezing.

Elledouble · 08/09/2015 20:59

I bet they err on the side of caution so that babies don't overheat. It was a lesson we learned quite quickly that my son doesn't sleep well when he's cold!

StormyBlue · 08/09/2015 21:25

When my DS was little I used to put mitts on him (or, while he was swaddled and wore sleep suits, got the kind where the hands were covered). I agree that the temperature of hands and feet can be misleading.

My son is nearly one but most nights right now he just has a long sleeved PJ top on under his gro bag. You would be surprised about getting two piece PJs for young babies, you can get them in a lot of places, I got some for DS while I was pregnant but found they weren't very practical at the age when they lie down all the time because they are always riding up which isn't very comfy. I would just use long sleeved vests in your situation, they are surely the same temperature wise and they stay put.

WorldsBiggestGrotbag · 08/09/2015 21:54

I find the gro bag recommendations leave mine too warm! Both are very warm babies though. DD1 (22 months) has never complained about being too cold though, she is always taking her clothes off because she's too hot!

eastmidswarwicknightnanny · 09/09/2015 02:19

18 degrees in baby room and in short sleeve vest, sleepsuit and 2.5tog gro bag had been in 1.5, but got cold. Also has a cellular blanket on plus another thin blanket he likes to be warm.

winchester1 · 09/09/2015 03:49

I'd take the recommendations with a pinch of salt. Just feel your babies neck if they're cold and asleep already add a blanket and next night add a layer of clothes. I've one kid that always over heated and one who is always cold. They are in the same room, the hot one is sleeping in a nappy while the cold one is in a vest and 1 tog bag.
