I don't want to jinx myself today, but no accidents at all so far (and last week at toddler group it was a mare - 2 accidents in 2 hours alone - I ran out of spare clothes!). He had a poo in his lunchtime nap nappy but I positively encouraged that as I said he had a choice whether he did one in the potty or waited for his lunchtime nappy. I'm just pleased that cleanup was a lot easier and it takes unnecessary pressure off him too.

Pruni, yay your DS! Especially the 'P' poo. If your initial is p that is. If your intial is X or W I would be even more impressed.

I'm feeling really down about this now.

Since that one success it's all gone down hill. Wees are variable but fairly good now as long as I take him regularly (and more frequently after I know he's drunk a large quantity) but his poos are just getting worse.

Since that success (which dh tells me ds2 gagged a little when he saw the poo, which I don't know if that's affected anything) ds2 has had a bad cold (which also don't know if it's affected anything) and has switched from one pretty soft poo but with substance in the morning after which it was safe to venture out to fairly runny poos (about 2 a day - and not immediately after food, so my gut feel is that it's not illness-related diarrhoea as it's not constant - it's just a lot lot softer than normal) in the afternoon.

Unfortunately, this also coincides with nursery and I got a very frosty reception Friday afternoon as that was the second time they'd had to change him that week. I'm sure they think I've sent him in ill, but apart from a mild cold he's perfectly right as rain. Dh also thinks molars might be coming through just to add to it.

Anyway, I don't know what to do. I feel we've made real progress with the wees so I don't want to go backwards, but at the same time feel like I can't show my face at nursery at the moment. Do I keep him away from nursery for a few days and hope he gets over "it" quick (whatever "it" may be - I think it's just an overactive bowel triggered by something as he's always had fairly soft poos)? Do I give up and put him in pull ups after we've had so much positive progress in the other department? Feel quite upset about it all, tbh.

I know... I just feel that we were getting somewhere... if we'd made no progress then it would have been a simple decision. Can't work out what's gone on with his poos at all.

Does it sound like a stomach bug? I thought stomach bugs were pretty constant flow - not at specific times of day hours after eating. I'm wondering myself if I shouldn't have sent him to nursery on Friday, but then reading up on it, it's likely to be "toddler diarrhoea" i.e. non-infectious but could last bloomin' ages.

buggerbuggerbuggerbugger

am probably a pariah at the nursery now.

Well we've put him in pull ups today but are still taking him to the potty 2 hourly for wees to try and at least keep that habit going. I just hope this doesn't set him back too much...

Funnily enough I read it in toddler taming too But also on surgerydoor.co.uk and somewhere else on the net which now completely escapes me... only there doesn't seem to be any consensus whether to increase or decrease dietry fibre to help. Says to increase fat in the diet and decrease sugary drinks (am going to tell nursery no squash I think - at least they get to deal with his wrath and not me! I'll just have the fall out at toddler group...)

TheHighwayCod · 26/11/2006 11:39

sorry was away

Was still in pull ups yesterday and didn't go to nursery.

We think we might have sussed what was going on though... on Sunday he spent most of the day chewing his big brother's lego bricks - right to the back of his mouth. Molars?

Anyway was more solid yesterday morning but didn't send him to nursery just in case (but in the event, would have been fine). Debating whether to put him back in pants today or whether to stay in pull ups for a while longer (it's been so lovely and stress free with pull ups!)

GeorginaA · 28/11/2006 06:24

and lol about 4 changes of clothes... oh I feel your pain

curlew · 28/11/2006 06:46

Can I be subversive here? WHAT"S THE HURRY? They're only little - why not just keep them in nappies or, if you must, pull ups, until one day they say "I don't want to wear this thing any more" and then they don't. And they will - I promise. No stress, no battles, no smelly carpets, and so much more time to do and worry about other things! Children do things at such different times - so don't compare your to anyone else's (that way madness lies) and if anyone comments on yours not being potty trained say "Ermintrude is not a puppy - she does not need to be trained - she needs to learn. And that is what she is doing. At the pace which suits her mind and body."
Rant over.

GeorginaA · 28/11/2006 08:09

curlew: it's not that simple - ds2 has been BEGGING to use the toilet like his big brother for MONTHS - I've actually been putting him off for a while and eventually caved when I thought he was old enough to cope.
