If you believe "everything in moderation" where food's concerned, answer me this, please

I was wondering - why aren't more people actually quite pissed off that so much of the pretty expensive food and drink marketed specifically at children so often has low-grade cheap (and shitey) ingredients in?

Most mothers go "ah well, moderation's the key" and often get bitchy and snippy at anyone who mentions the yard-long list of ingredients in so many soft drinks and other foodstuffs.

But I don't think that this is the issue. Yes, moderation's the key when it's FOOD made of , but a lot of this is ingredients you'd never have in your kitchen, put there to preserve food so it can live on a shelf for two years, improve the "mouth feel" (fgs), or make it "appealing" colours.

So, all you "moderation" mums - why doesn't it bother you that you're being marketed at and taken for lemons (with added E numbers, glucose fructose syrup and partially hydrogenated vegetable oil)?

I did HE at school (am 33) but I wouldn't stay it would have put me in very good stead as a family cook. I definitely learnt the basics off my Mum. My cooking has changed and improved a lot since I left home through practice and trying new things, mind you, including a quantum leap forward once I had children. I do think it is quite common nowadays to put a lot more effort in once you are feeding the next generation.

But I do agree with the OP - the "everything in moderation" argument grates on me. DS went to a party last night, from 4.30-6.30, having had PE in the afternoon then Eco Club after school. He didn't have a drink because they only offered coke and fanta orange and he won't drink fizzy. I explained that he should have asked politely for a glass of water but it is hard when you are 5. Mind you, he would have been happy with a fruit shoot.

I am 33 too, and did home Ec at school, until 3rd year (not Y9). Didn't learn anything of any practical use in the lessons though I'm afraid. It was mainly baking, and not actually cooking.

[QUOTE=By morningpaper on Thursday, 16 November, 2006 12:20:13]To be honest, if they are other people's house eating crap then I don't care

As long as they aren't bouncing on MY sofa ...

quite agree ) For my son, when he's at home he has either water or milk but when he's at his nan & granddad's they give him juice. Wasn't overly keen when a friend while we were out bought him a "fat" coke - mainly because I lived on the stuff when I was a kid and my teeth are now shot to sh&t

Am with Cappuccino...I don't buy specifically marketed for Kids products, or ratehr exptrememly rarely, as they are to expensive...I still believe though that in moderation nothing will harm you....doesn't mean though you have to be taken in by marketing ploy...that would be the mums that believe all the labels that say it's great for teh Kids, and wot not...doesn't mean they do anything in moderation though!

somethings i dont think are ok at all EVER...

such as any thing with aspartane in, especially for kid... give me full sugar any day! And while i dont think 1 'tweenies' yogurt will 'kill' them, i would NEVER EVER purchase one, where their are alterntaives (ie organic noddy yogurts = similrar to tweenies - crap) id ALWAYS go for the better one!

would also never purchase fruit shoot, or give to any person, fulll stop, but if a child was given one at a party i wouldnt take it away from them eother!
